Effect of an InP/InGaAs Interface on Spin-orbit Interaction in InAlAs/InGaAs Heterostructures
We report the effect of the insertion of an InP/InGaAs
Interface on Rashba spin-orbit interaction in
InAlAs/InGaAs quantum wells. A small spin
split-off energy in InP produces a very intriguing band lineup in the valence
bands in this system. With or without this InP layer above the
InGaAs well, the overall values of the spin-orbit coupling
constant turned out to be enhanced or diminished for samples with the
front- or back-doping position, respectively. These experimental results, using
weak antilocalization analysis, are compared with the results of the
theory. The actual conditions of the interfaces and
materials should account for the quantitative difference in magnitude between
the measurements and calculations.Comment: Submitted for publication; v2 to adjust Eq.6; v3 to correct the

DNA methylation-based age prediction and telomere length in white blood cells and cumulus cells of infertile women with normal or poor response to ovarian stimulation.
An algorithm assessing the methylation levels of 353 informative CpG sites in the human genome permits accurate prediction of the chronologic age of a subject. Interestingly, when there is discrepancy between the predicted age and chronologic age (age acceleration or AgeAccel ), patients are at risk for morbidity and mortality. Identification of infertile patients at risk for accelerated reproductive senescence may permit preventative action. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of the epigenetic clock concept in reproductive age women undergoing fertility treatment by applying the age prediction algorithm in peripheral (white blood cells [WBCs]) and follicular somatic cells (cumulus cells [CCs]), and to identify whether women with premature reproductive aging (diminished ovarian reserve) were at risk of AgeAccel in their age prediction. Results indicated that the epigenetic algorithm accurately predicts age when applied to WBCs but not to CCs. The age prediction of CCs was substantially younger than chronologic age regardless of the patient\u27s age or response to stimulation. In addition, telomeres of CCs were significantly longer than that of WBCs. Our findings suggest that CCs do not demonstrate changes in methylome-predicted age or telomere-length in association with increasing female age or ovarian response to stimulation
Pressure-dependent transition from atoms to nanoparticles in magnetron sputtering: Effect on WSi2 film roughness and stress
We report on the transition between two regimes from several-atom clusters to
much larger nanoparticles in Ar magnetron sputter deposition of WSi2, and the
effect of nanoparticles on the properties of amorphous thin films and
multilayers. Sputter deposition of thin films is monitored by in situ x-ray
scattering, including x-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence small angle
x-ray scattering. The results show an abrupt transition at an Ar background
pressure Pc; the transition is associated with the threshold for energetic
particle thermalization, which is known to scale as the product of the Ar
pressure and the working distance between the magnetron source and the
substrate surface. Below Pc smooth films are produced, while above Pc roughness
increases abruptly, consistent with a model in which particles aggregate in the
deposition flux before reaching the growth surface. The results from WSi2 films
are correlated with in situ measurement of stress in WSi2/Si multilayers, which
exhibits a corresponding transition from compressive to tensile stress at Pc.
The tensile stress is attributed to coalescence of nanoparticles and the
elimination of nano-voids.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures; v3: published versio
Probing onset of strong localization and electron-electron interactions with the presence of direct insulator-quantum Hall transition
We have performed low-temperature transport measurements on a disordered
two-dimensional electron system (2DES). Features of the strong localization
leading to the quantum Hall effect are observed after the 2DES undergoes a
direct insulator-quantum Hall transition with increasing the perpendicular
magnetic field. However, such a transition does not correspond to the onset of
strong localization. The temperature dependences of the Hall resistivity and
Hall conductivity reveal the importance of the electron-electron interaction
effects to the observed transition in our study.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Optimal Path and Minimal Spanning Trees in Random Weighted Networks
We review results on the scaling of the optimal path length in random
networks with weighted links or nodes. In strong disorder we find that the
length of the optimal path increases dramatically compared to the known small
world result for the minimum distance. For Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi (ER) and scale
free networks (SF), with parameter (), we find that the
small-world nature is destroyed. We also find numerically that for weak
disorder the length of the optimal path scales logaritmically with the size of
the networks studied. We also review the transition between the strong and weak
disorder regimes in the scaling properties of the length of the optimal path
for ER and SF networks and for a general distribution of weights, and suggest
that for any distribution of weigths, the distribution of optimal path lengths
has a universal form which is controlled by the scaling parameter
where plays the role of the disorder strength, and
is the length of the optimal path in strong disorder. The
relation for is derived analytically and supported by numerical
simulations. We then study the minimum spanning tree (MST) and show that it is
composed of percolation clusters, which we regard as "super-nodes", connected
by a scale-free tree. We furthermore show that the MST can be partitioned into
two distinct components. One component the {\it superhighways}, for which the
nodes with high centrality dominate, corresponds to the largest cluster at the
percolation threshold which is a subset of the MST. In the other component,
{\it roads}, low centrality nodes dominate. We demonstrate the significance
identifying the superhighways by showing that one can improve significantly the
global transport by improving a very small fraction of the network.Comment: review, accepted at IJB
Magnetic phase separation in ordered alloys
We present a lattice model to study the equilibrium phase diagram of ordered
alloys with one magnetic component that exhibits a low temperature phase
separation between paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The model is
constructed from the experimental facts observed in CuAlMn and it
includes coupling between configurational and magnetic degrees of freedom which
are appropriated for reproducing the low temperature miscibility gap. The
essential ingredient for the occurrence of such a coexistence region is the
development of ferromagnetic order induced by the long-range atomic order of
the magnetic component. A comparative study of both mean-field and Monte Carlo
solutions is presented. Moreover, the model may enable the study of the
structure of the ferromagnetic domains embedded in the non-magnetic matrix.
This is relevant in relation to phenomena such as magnetoresistance and
paramagnetism.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev.
Measuring and understanding photo sharing experiences in social virtual reality
Millions of photos are shared online daily, but the richness of interaction compared with face-to-face (F2F) sharing is still missing. While this may change with social Virtual Reality (socialVR), we still lack tools to measure such immersive and interactive experiences. In this paper, we investigate photo sharing experiences in immersive environments, focusing on socialVR. Running context mapping (N=10), an expert creative session (N=6), and an online experience clustering questionnaire (N=20), we develop and statistically evaluate a questionnaire to measure photo sharing experiences. We then ran a controlled, within-subject study (N=26 pairs) to compare photo sharing under F2F, Skype, and Facebook Spaces. Using interviews, audio analysis, and our questionnaire, we found that socialVR can closely approximate F2F sharing. We contribute empirical findings on the immersiveness differences between digital communication media, and propose a socialVR questionnaire that can in the future generalize beyond photo sharing
