The atoms of the ring have a structural disorder and they are divided into two sites, with occupancy factors of 0.584 and 0.426.. Microgastrinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitizing Epirrita autumnata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) larvae in Fennoscandia with description of Cotesia autumnatae Shaw, sp. n.
The microgastrine subset of hymenopteran parasitoids of the geometrid Epirrita
autumnata is investigated in Fennoscandia. Ecology, including population dynamics,
of the moth has been intensively studied in northern and mountainous
Finland, Norway and Sweden. Recently supported hypotheses about the causes
of its cyclic population dynamics stress the role of parasitoids, while the
parasitoid complex with some 15 species is insufficiently known. The complex
includes four solitarymicrogastrine species, Protapanteles anchisiades (Nixon),
P. immunis (Wesmael), Cotesia salebrosa (Marshall) and C. autumnatae Shaw,
sp. n. Here, we provide detailed figures for the latter, which is morphologically
close to C. jucunda (Marshall), and describe the species as new to science. We
also providemore general habitus figures of the other three species, as well as an
identification key for the four species, aiming to aid recognition of these species
by ecologists dealingwithmicrogastrine parasitoids of E. autumnata and their alternative
geometrid hosts
Experience Improves the Reliability of Subjective Measurements of Temperament in Beef Cattle
Reliability of experienced and inexperienced observers when assessing the behavior of cattle when restrained in a squeeze chute (chute score), and when exiting the chute (exit score), was compared. Overall, experienced observers had higher reliability than inexperienced observers. Increasing the number of individuals scoring an animal decreased the degree of agreement. However, within an acceptable tolerance for difference in scores, such disagreement may be beneficial; it allows for subtlety in interpretations of temperament, which when averaged, may better reflect docility. Reliabilities were higher for exit score than chute score. This may reflect the complexity of the trait being evaluated, with fewer behaviors observed when cattle exit as compared to when restrained in a chute. Producers may profitably use chute and exit score to quantify docility in cattle. However, it may be worthwhile to gain experience in using the scoring system before implementing it for selection decisions

Repeated Calm Handling Can Lead to More Docile Cattle
Changes in temperament in heifers when handled either frequently or infrequently were evaluated subjectively based on their behavior when restrained in (chute score) and exiting from (exit score) a squeeze chute. Chute scores decreased over time–a favorable direction–with more dramatic declines in heifers handled more frequently. Heifers with higher chute scores on the first day of handling had the largest reduction in score. Exit scores changed less over time. Chute score therefore may be more indicative of acclimation to a novel environment than exit score. Both scores appear to offer a fast, easy and inexpensive way to quantify docility in cattle. Heifers became calmer with repeated gentle handling. Producers therefore may benefit from allowing cattle a few days to acclimate to new working facilities before assessing docility
Doping dependence of the upper critical field in untwinned YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films
We report on measurements of the doping dependence of the upper critical field Hc,2 in 50 nm thick YBa2Cu3O7−δ films. The films are untwinned and are characterized by a small in-plane compressive strain. We find that the Hc,2 shows a strong decrease in the underdoped region of the phase diagram, in agreement with that which has been measured in relaxed single crystals. The origin of the decrease of Hc,2 in the underdoped regime is discussed within a scenario where charge density wave (CDW) order competes with superconductivity. This demonstrates the potential of using thin films to study the phase diagram of high-Tc materials under strain, and opens up the possibility for investigating the interplay between CDW order and superconductivity tuned by strain
Toothed whale auditory brainstem responses measured with a non-invasive, on-animal tag

Data from more species could be available if such measurements were collected from unrestrained animals in the wild. This study investigated whether electrophysiological hearing data could be recorded from a trained harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) using a non-invasive, animal-attached tag. The results demonstrate that auditory brainstem responses to external and self-generated stimuli can be measured from a stationary odontocete using an animal-attached recorder. With additional development, tag-based electrophysiological platforms may facilitate the collection of hearing data from freely swimming odontocetes in the wild.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
The identity of the Finnish Osmoderma (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae) population established by COI sequencing
The hermit beetle Osmoderma eremita (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) is a flagship species for invertebrate conservation efforts by the European Union. This taxon has recently been revealed as a species complex likely encompassing five cryptic species. The northernmost population of Osmoderma is found on the island of Ruissalo in Turku, Finland. This population has been protected as species 0. eremita, but its true species affinity has never been established. To resolve its identity, we sequenced the mitochondrial COI gene from seven specimens sampled in Ruissalo. Based on a phylogenetic hypothesis generated from the sequences combined with previously published data, the Finnish hermit beetle was identified as Osmoderma barnabita. Information regarding the ecology and life cycle of 0. eremita should then not uncritically be assumed to apply to the Finnish population. Rather, the Finnish population should be treated as a separate entity in conservation and management of European Osmoderma
The common murre (Uria aalge), an auk seabird, reacts to underwater sound

Many species of marine birds, such as penguins, auks, and cormorants, find their food underwater where light is often limited, suggesting sound detection may play a vital role. Yet, for most marine birds, it is unknown whether they are using, and can thereby be affected by, underwater sound. The authors conducted a series of playback experiments to test whether Alcid seabirds responded to and were disrupted by, underwater sound. Underwater broadband sound bursts and mid-frequency naval 53 C sonar signals were presented to two common murres (Uria aalge) in a quiet pool. The received sound pressure levels varied from 110 to 137 dB re 1 μPa. Both murres showed consistent reactions to sounds of all intensities, as compared to no reactions during control trials. For one of the birds, there was a clearly graded response, so that more responses were found at higher received levels. The authors' findings indicate that common murres may be affected by, and therefore potentially also vulnerable to, underwater noise. The effect of man-made noise on murres, and possibly other marine birds, requires more thorough consideration.This project was funded by the U. S.
