On The Origin Of The Gamma Rays From The Galactic Center
The region surrounding the center of the Milky Way is both astrophysically
rich and complex, and is predicted to contain very high densities of dark
matter. Utilizing three years of data from the Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope
(and the recently available Pass 7 ultraclean event class), we study the
morphology and spectrum of the gamma ray emission from this region and find
evidence of a spatially extended component which peaks at energies between 300
MeV and 10 GeV. We compare our results to those reported by other groups and
find good agreement. The extended emission could potentially originate from
either the annihilations of dark matter particles in the inner galaxy, or from
the collisions of high energy protons that are accelerated by the Milky Way's
supermassive black hole with gas. If interpreted as dark matter annihilation
products, the emission spectrum favors dark matter particles with a mass in the
range of 7-12 GeV (if annihilating dominantly to leptons) or 25-45 GeV (if
annihilating dominantly to hadronic final states). The intensity of the
emission corresponds to a dark matter annihilation cross section consistent
with that required to generate the observed cosmological abundance in the early
universe (sigma v ~ 3 x 10^-26 cm^3/s). We also present conservative limits on
the dark matter annihilation cross section which are at least as stringent as
those derived from other observations.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figure

High-Tip-Speed, Low-Loading Transonic Fan Stage. Part 1: Aerodynamic and Mechanical Design
A high-tip-speed, low-loading transonic fan stage was designed to deliver an overall pressure ratio of 1.5 with an adiabatic efficiency of 86 percent. The design flow per unit annulus area is 42.0 pounds per square foot. The fan features a hub/tip ratio of 0.46, a tip diameter of 28.74 in. and operates at a design tip speed of 1600 fps. For these design conditions, the rotor blade tip region operates with supersonic inlet and supersonic discharge relative velocities. A sophisticated quasi-three-dimensional characteristic section design procedure was used for the all-supersonic sections and the inlet of the midspan transonic sections. For regions where the relative outlet velocities are supersonic, the blade operates with weak oblique shocks only
Acceleration disturbances and requirements for ASTROD I
ASTRODynamical Space Test of Relativity using Optical Devices I (ASTROD I)
mainly aims at testing relativistic gravity and measuring the solar-system
parameters with high precision, by carrying out laser ranging between a
spacecraft in a solar orbit and ground stations. In order to achieve these
goals, the magnitude of the total acceleration disturbance of the proof mass
has to be less than 10−13 m s−2 Hz−1/2 at 0.1 m Hz. In this
paper, we give a preliminary overview of the sources and magnitude of
acceleration disturbances that could arise in the ASTROD I proof mass. Based on
the estimates of the acceleration disturbances and by assuming a simple
controlloop model, we infer requirements for ASTROD I. Our estimates show that
most of the requirements for ASTROD I can be relaxed in comparison with Laser
Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).Comment: 19 pages, two figures, accepted for publication by Class. Quantum

The Interplay between Light Quality and Biostimulant Application Affects the Antioxidant Capacity and Photosynthetic Traits of Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill).
This paper evaluates the combined effect of biostimulant and light quality on bioactive compound production and seedling growth of soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) plants. Germinated seeds pre-treated with different concentrations (0.01%, 0.05%, 0.5%) of an amino acid-based biostimu-lant were grown for 4 days at the dark (D), white fluorescent light (FL), full-spectrum LED (FS), and red-blue (RB) light. Potential changes in the antioxidant content of sprouts were evaluated. Part of the sprouts was left to grow at FL, FS, and RB light regimes for 24 days to assess modifications in plants’ anatomical and physiological traits during the early developmental plant stage. The seed pre-treatment with all biostimulant concentrations significantly increased sprout antioxidant compounds, sugar, and protein content compared to the control (seeds treated with H2 O). The positive effect on bioactive compounds was improved under FS and RB compared to D and FL light regimes. At the seedling stage, 0.05% was the only concentration of biostimulant effective in increasing the specific leaf area (SLA) and photosynthetic efficiency. Compared to FL, the growth under FS and RB light regimes significantly enhanced the beneficial effect of 0.05% on SLA and photosynthesis. This concentration led to leaf thickness increase and shoot/root ratio reduction. Our findings demonstrated that seed pre-treatment with proper biostimulant concentration in combination with specific light regimes during plant development may represent a useful means to modify the bioactive compound amount and leaf structural and photosynthetic traits
Online Learning of Facility Locations
In this paper, we provide a rigorous theoretical investigation of an online learning version of the Facility Location problem which is motivated by emerging problems in real-world applications. In our formulation, we are given a set of sites and an online sequence of user requests. At each trial, the learner selects a subset of sites and then incurs a cost for each selected site and an additional cost which is the price of the user’s connection to the nearest site in the selected subset. The problem may be solved by an application of the well-known Hedge algorithm. This would, however, require time and space exponential in the number of the given sites, which motivates our design of a novel quasi-linear time algorithm for this problem, with good theoretical guarantees on its performance
