    Application of ERTS data to the detection of thin cirrus and clear air turbulence

    The feasibility of detecting a thin cirrus and clear air turbulence from ERTS MSS data is explored. The result of analyses indicates that a thin cirrus not shown in conventional meteorological satellite picture can be revealed in ERTS MSS picture. It is also found that the core of jet stream can be located with high accuracy from ERTS pictures and the possible area of clear air turbulence can be predicted if the data of the quality of ERTS data are available in real time

    Superconductivity at T_c ~ 14 K in Single Crystalline FeTe0.61_{0.61}Se0.39_{0.39}

    Single crystalline FeTe0.61_{0.61}Se0.39_{0.39} with a sharp superconducting transition at TcT_{\textrm{c}} \sim 14 K is synthesized via slow furnace cooling followed by low-temperature annealing. The effect of annealing on the chemical and superconducting inhomogeneities is carefully characterized. We also report resistivity, magnetization, and magneto-optical images of this crystal. Based on the Bean model, critical current density is estimated to exceed 1×1051 \times 10^5 A/cm2^2 below 5 K under zero field. Weak fish-tail effect is identified at lower temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Incapacity Benefit: A Health or Labour Market Phenomenon?

    The number of people claiming Incapacity Benefit has remained fairly constant in recent years at around 2.7 million (7% of the working age population), although the numbers have trebled since the 1970s when an earlier version of this benefit was available. In January 2006 the UK Government set the ambitious target of reducing the number of claimants by one million, or around 40% of the total, within the next decade. New initiatives will focus on increasing the number of people who remain in work and increasing the number leaving benefits and finding employment. This paper explores these two critical transitions using data from waves 5 to 13 of the British Household Panel Survey. We consider whether the moves onto and off benefit are driven by health status or whether labour market factors are also important. Our results show that while health, and in particular psychological health, is an important determinant of these transitions, other factors such as age, occupation and geographical location are also key explanatory factors. This suggests that a very broad range of policy measures will be required if the government is to meet its target

    Environmental change pattern in central Japan as revealed by LANDSAT data

    The author has identified the following significant results. A patched cirrus reported by weather stations was hardly recognizable by the eye in LANDSAT MSS data of a three year time lapse. The cloud cover affected radiance values significantly in band 4, while its effect was minimal in bands 6 and 7 (near infrared spectra). The cross correlation coefficient analysis between the two images indicated that the highest value obtained in central Japan was 0.963 for the area where little change occurred in land use over the three period. An analysis of land use in Nagoya showed little change in the metropolitan area while a fairly large change occurred in the northern periphery of the city where large scale housing projects are located

    Fine-tuning in gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models and induced top Yukawa coupling

    It is shown that fine-tuning of the Higgs parameters stronger than a few % is required at the best in the models with gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. With the aim of solving this problem, we consider a new type of models in which the top Yukawa coupling is induced at TeV scale through mass mixing with unknown matter fields. Then it is found that the fine-tuning problem can be eliminated essentially.     Melting and metallization of silica in the cores of gas giants, ice giants and super Earths

    The physical state and properties of silicates at conditions encountered in the cores of gas giants, ice giants and of Earth like exoplanets now discovered with masses up to several times the mass of the Earth remains mostly unknown. Here, we report on theoretical predictions of the properties of silica, SiO2_2, up to 4 TPa and about 20,000K using first principle molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory. For conditions found in the Super-Earths and in ice giants, we show that silica remains a poor electrical conductor up to 10 Mbar due to an increase in the Si-O coordination with pressure. For Jupiter and Saturn cores, we find that MgSiO3_3 silicate has not only dissociated into MgO and SiO2_2, as shown in previous studies, but that these two phases have likely differentiated to lead to a core made of liquid SiO2_2 and solid (Mg,Fe)O.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
