AudExpCreator: A GUI-based Matlab tool for designing and creating auditory experiments with the Psychophysics Toolbox
We present AudExpCreator, a GUI-based Matlab tool for designing and creating
auditory experiments. AudExpCreator allows users to generate auditory
experiments that run on Matlab's Psychophysics Toolbox without having to write
any code; rather, users simply follow instructions in GUIs to specify desired
design parameters. The software comprises five auditory study types, including
behavioral studies and integration with EEG and physiological response
collection systems. Advanced features permit more complicated experimental
designs as well as maintenance and update of previously created experiments.
AudExpCreator alleviates programming barriers while providing a free,
open-source alternative to commercial experimental design software.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
Parallel-vector unsymmetric Eigen-Solver on high performance computers
The popular QR algorithm for solving all eigenvalues of an unsymmetric matrix is reviewed. Among the basic components in the QR algorithm, it was concluded from this study, that the reduction of an unsymmetric matrix to a Hessenberg form (before applying the QR algorithm itself) can be done effectively by exploiting the vector speed and multiple processors offered by modern high-performance computers. Numerical examples of several test cases have indicated that the proposed parallel-vector algorithm for converting a given unsymmetric matrix to a Hessenberg form offers computational advantages over the existing algorithm. The time saving obtained by the proposed methods is increased as the problem size increased
Optimal Investment with Lumpy Costs
In this paper we solve a continuous-time model of investment with uncertainty, irreversibility and a broad class of lumpy adjustment costs. In addition to being general, our solution is quite tractable and intuitive. We show that, in contrast to standard results, the marginal value of capital jumps when investment is undertaken. We also find that firms facing higher uncertainty let their capital stock depreciate further before they invest, but increase their capital by a similar proportion once they do invest. We extend both the user cost and q theories of investment to incorporate lumpy investment. We confirm that with lumpy investment, a variant of Tobin's q can be a better predictor of investment than marginal q.

Optimal Storage Rack Design for a 3-dimensional Compact AS/RS
In this paper, we consider a newly-designed compact three-dimensional automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS). The system consists of an automated crane taking care of movements in the horizontal and vertical direction. A gravity conveying mechanism takes care of the depth movement. Our research objective is to analyze the system performance and optimally dimension of the system. We estimate the crane’s expected travel time for single-command cycles. From the expected travel time, we calculate the optimal ratio between three dimensions that minimizes the travel time for a random storage strategy. In addition, we derive an approximate closed-form travel time expression for dual command cycles. Design and Control of Warehouse Order Picking: a literature review
Order picking has long been identified as the most labour-intensive and costly activity for almost every warehouse; the cost of order picking is estimated to be as much as 55% of the total warehouse operating expense. Any underperformance in order picking can lead to unsatisfactory service and high operational cost for its warehouse, and consequently for the whole supply chain. In order to operate efficiently, the orderpicking process needs to be robustly designed and optimally controlled. This paper gives a literature overview on typical decision problems in design and control of manual order-picking processes. We focus on optimal (internal) layout design, storage assignment methods, routing methods, order batching and zoning. The research in this area has grown rapidly recently. A variable streamflow velocity method for global river routing model: model description and preliminary results
International audienceThis paper presents an attempt of simulating daily fluctuations of river discharge at global scale. Total Runoff Integrating Pathways (TRIP) is a global river routing model which can help to isolate the river basins, inter-basin transport of water through river channels, as well as collect and route runoff to the river mouths for all the major rivers. In the previous version of TRIP (TRIP 1.0), a simple approach of constant river flow velocity is used. In general, that approach is sufficient to model mean long-term discharges. However, to model short-term fluctuations, more sophisticated approach is required. In this study, we implement a variable streamflow velocity method to TRIP (TRIP 2.0) and validate the new approach over the world's 20 major rivers. Two numerical experiments, one with the TRIP 1.0 and another with TRIP 2.0 are performed. Input runoff is taken from the multi-model product provided by the second Global Soil Wetness Project. For the rivers which have clear daily fluctuations of river discharge, TRIP 2.0 shows advantages over TRIP 1.0, suggesting that TRIP 2.0 can be used to model flood events
