    Fertility Desire and Reproductive Health Care Needs of Men and Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Nekemte, East Wollega, Ethiopia

    Understanding fertility desire and reproductive health care needs of HIV positive men and women in the era of better access to antiretroviral therapy and improved health status is important in planning and  organizing appropriate health services. To assess the fertility desire and reproductive health care needs of men and women living with HIV/AIDS inNekemte town, East Wollega, Ethiopia. A facility based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among PLHIV both men and women from February to March 2010 on a total sample of 592 respondents in Nekemte town using structured questionnaires complimented by an in-depth  interview. Men had higher desire to have a child than women (40.5% versus 30.7%). Men and women who were sexually active in the six months prior to survey were 78.4% and 61.8% respectively. Being male (AOR: 1.7, 95% CI: 1.1-2.8), having no living child (AOR: 13.1, 95%CI: 5.3-32.3), or having less than three living children (AOR: 4.2, 95%CI: 2.2-8.0), having partner desiring child (AOR: 15.4, 95%CI: 9.2-25.8), CD4 count .200 (AOR: 2.0, 95%CI: 1.2-3.5) were significantly associated with fertility desire. Health care delivery should consider the desire for childrenby men and women living with HIV/AIDS in order to avert preventable untoward health and related consequences

    Sero-Prevalence of Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia in Goat at Selected Woredas of Afar Region

    A cross - sectional survey was conducted from 17 Oct. to 11 Dec. 2008 with the aim of determining the sero-prevalence and the major risk factors of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) in the selected eight districts of Afar region namely: Afambo, Assaita, Dubti, Mille, Gewane, Amibara, Dewe and Telalak. During the study a total of 329 goat sera, was examined for the presence of specific antibodies against Mycoplasma capricolum sub. spp. capripneumoniae using CFT. The result revealed that 22.49% (74) prevalence rate. With respect to goats origin, the serological prevalence rates was 31.85%, 36.36%, 18.75%, 12.50%, 12.16%, 10%, 22.22%, and 19.56% from Afambo, Assaita, Dubti, Mille, Gewane, Amibara, Dewe and Telalak districts respectively.     Fertility Desire and Contraceptive Utilization among People Living With HIV/AIDS on ART in Hosanna Town, Southern Ethiopia

    HIV positive individuals may or may not have intention to have children. They could also have different degrees of utilization and demand for contraception. The desire of HIV infected persons to have children in the future has implication for the transmission of HIV to sexual partners or newborns. The study was designed to assess the fertility desire and contraceptive utilization among PLWHAs on ART in Hossana town. institutional based cross sectional study supplemented by in-depth  interview was conducted from January to March 2010 on total sample of 321 who were on ART. Women 18-49 years and men 18-59 years were included. Data was entered by using EPI info 2000 then exported and  analyzed by SPSS 17.0. Total of 117 (36.45%) of respondents were   desiring children. Respondents with no children (AOR 60.89, 95% CI  8.02-462.05), those who intended to use family planning in the future (AOR 4.35, 95% CI 1.61-11.73) were more likely to desire children. 102(31.8%) were using family planning. Being married (AOR 7.83, 95% CI 1.08-56.79), having three or more children (AOR 4.54, 95% CI  1.12-18.48), and having knowledge on mother to child transmission (AOR 4.29, 95% CI 1.98-9.26) plan to have children in the future (AOR 0.29, 95% CI 0.1-0.82) were significantly associated with family planning. A highproportion of HIV positive individuals desired children. A better and   evidence based understanding of fertility intentions and demand for contraception was needed to promote and protect women and men living  with HIV/AIDs to make informed decisions about reproduction and to have access to appropriate sexual reproductive health services

    Effects of lime and phosphorus rates on growth of hybrid Arabica coffee seedlings at Jimma, southwest Ethiopia

    Open Access ArticleCoffee growing soil of southwestern region parts of Ethiopia are classified as Nitisols with having a low pH and highly deficient in phosphorus. A nursery experiment was conducted at Jimma Agricultural Research Center, southwestern Ethiopia to evaluate the effects of lime and phosphorus rates on coffee seedling growth under nursery conditions. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The treatments were arranged in factorial combinations of five levels of lime (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 g) and four levels of phosphorus (0, 400, 600 and 800 mg) 2.5 kg-1top soil. The statical data was analyzed through SAS software and treatment means were compared at 5% probability using Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results revealed that the interactions of lime and P rates significantly increased the growth of both non-destructive parameters (plant height, girth, number of nods, interned length, leaf number and leaf area) and Root growth parameters (taproot length, lateral root length, lateral root number, root volume, leaf stem and root fresh weight, of coffee seedlings. The maximum shoot and root extensions were obtained from the interaction of 10 g lime and 800 mg P rates 2.5 kg-1top soil. On the other hand, applications of P significantly (P≤ 0.01) affected soil and plant growth parameters. As P rate increased availability P boosted and plant growth were enhanced. Similarly, an application of lime significantly affected (P≤ 0.01) plant growth and enhance nutrient availability up to 10 g, though further applications adversely affect seedling growth and nutrient availability. Hence, combined application of 10 g lime and 800 mg P rate 2.5 kg-1top enhances the optimum growth of coffee seedlings under nursery conditions

    Systematic review and meta-analysis: prevalence of alcohol use among young people in eastern Africa.

    OBJECTIVE: Systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies of alcohol use among young people (age 15-24 years) in eastern Africa to estimate prevalence of alcohol use and determine the extent of use of standardised screening questionnaires in alcohol studies. METHODS: Five databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Global Health, Africa-wide, and PsycINFO) were searched for publications until 30th June 2013. Results were summarised using the guidelines on preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) and on quality assessment using the modified quality assessment tool for systematic reviews of observational studies (QATSO). Heterogeneity was assessed using the I(2) statistic (DerSimonian-Laird). RESULTS: We identified 2785 potentially relevant studies, of which 56 were eligible for inclusion. Only two studies (4%) used the standardised Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) questionnaire, and six studies (13%) used the Cut down, Annoyed, Guilt, Eye opener (CAGE) questionnaire. The reported median prevalence of alcohol use was ever-use 52% [interquartile range (IQR): 20-58%], use in the last month 28% (IQR: 17-37%), use in the last year 26% (IQR: 22-32%), and problem drinking as defined by CAGE or AUDIT 15% (IQR: 3-36%). We observed high heterogeneity between studies, with the highest prevalence of ever use of alcohol among university students (82%; 95%CI: 79-85%) and female sex workers (66%; 95%CI: 58-74%). Current use was most prevalent among male sex workers (69%; 95%CI: 63-75%). CONCLUSIONS: Reported alcohol use and problem drinking were common among diverse groups of young people in eastern Africa, indicating the urgent need for alcohol-focused interventions in this population. Few studies have used standardised alcohol screening questionnaires. Epidemiological research to investigate alcohol-focused interventions in young people should aim to apply such questionnaires that should be validated for use in this population

    Western Nebraska wheat producers and those in adjacent areas want taller wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars that retain their height under drought for better harvestability. ‘NE05548’ (Reg. No. CV-1117, PI 670462) hard red winter wheat was developed cooperatively by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA-ARS and released in January 2014 by the developing institutions. NE05548 was released primarily for its superior performance under rainfed conditions in western Nebraska and adjacent areas of the Great Plains and its tall plant stature. NE05548 was selected from the cross NE97426/NE98574 made in 1999 where the pedigree of NE97426 is ‘Brigantina’/2*‘Arapahoe’ and the pedigree of NE98574 is CO850267/‘Rawhide’. The F1 generation was grown in the greenhouse in 2000, and the F2 to F3 generations were advanced using the bulk breeding method in the field at Mead, NE, in 2001 to 2002. In 2003, single F3–derived F4 head rows were grown for selection. There was no further selection thereafter. The F3:5 was evaluated as a single four-row plot at Lincoln, NE, and a single row at Mead, NE, in 2004. In 2005, it was assigned the experimental line number NE05548. NE05548 was evaluated in replicated trials thereafter. It has excellent winter survival, acceptable disease reactions to many of the common diseases in its target area, and acceptable end-use quality for bread making
