New England funding reference guide
As stated in the thesis project, "This project will produce a reference book (the "Guide") that catalogues all available financing programs offered by various New England based public and quasi-public benefit corporations for small business people, women and people of color (the "Project Focus Group"). The Guide will present the information in a format deemed accessible and convenient by members of the Project Focus Group.
Over the course of the last 25 years, various governmental entities and corporations have created numerous financing programs for small business people, women and people of color. In most instances, the programs disburse a significantly lower level of funds than are "allocated" to the program. In other words, the programs are under used.
Members of the Project Focus Group could benefit from these programs; however, individuals often find it difficult to obtain sufficient information about particular programs' applicability to their specific financing needs.
If no means is found within the next three years to increase awareness among the Project Focus Group of various financing programs offered by various New England based public and quasi-public benefit corporations, these financing programs will remain under used by the Project Focus Group, increasing the risk that the "allocated" funds might be diverted to other uses further shrinking the pool of capital available to the Project Focus Group.

Words are Malleable: Computing Semantic Shifts in Political and Media Discourse
Recently, researchers started to pay attention to the detection of temporal
shifts in the meaning of words. However, most (if not all) of these approaches
restricted their efforts to uncovering change over time, thus neglecting other
valuable dimensions such as social or political variability. We propose an
approach for detecting semantic shifts between different viewpoints--broadly
defined as a set of texts that share a specific metadata feature, which can be
a time-period, but also a social entity such as a political party. For each
viewpoint, we learn a semantic space in which each word is represented as a low
dimensional neural embedded vector. The challenge is to compare the meaning of
a word in one space to its meaning in another space and measure the size of the
semantic shifts. We compare the effectiveness of a measure based on optimal
transformations between the two spaces with a measure based on the similarity
of the neighbors of the word in the respective spaces. Our experiments
demonstrate that the combination of these two performs best. We show that the
semantic shifts not only occur over time, but also along different viewpoints
in a short period of time. For evaluation, we demonstrate how this approach
captures meaningful semantic shifts and can help improve other tasks such as
the contrastive viewpoint summarization and ideology detection (measured as
classification accuracy) in political texts. We also show that the two laws of
semantic change which were empirically shown to hold for temporal shifts also
hold for shifts across viewpoints. These laws state that frequent words are
less likely to shift meaning while words with many senses are more likely to do

Mode identification in rapidly rotating stars
Context: Recent calculations of pulsation modes in rapidly rotating polytropic models and models based on the Self-Consistent Field method have shown that the frequency spectrum of low degree pulsation modes can be described by an empirical formula similar to Tassoul's asymptotic formula, provided that the underlying rotation profile is not too differential.
Aims: Given the simplicity of this asymptotic formula, we investigate whether it can provide a means by which to identify pulsation modes in rapidly rotating stars.
Methods: We develop a new mode identification scheme which consists in scanning a multidimensional parameter space for the formula coefficients which yield the best-fitting asymptotic spectra. This mode identification scheme is then tested on artificial spectra based on the asymptotic formula, on random frequencies and on spectra based on full numerical eigenmode calculations for which the mode identification is known beforehand. We also investigate the effects of adding random frequencies to mimic the effects of chaotic modes which are also expected to show up in such stars.
Results: In the absence of chaotic modes, it is possible to accurately find a correct mode identification for most of the observed frequencies provided these frequencies are sufficiently close to their asymptotic values. The addition of random frequencies can very quickly become problematic and hinder correct mode identification. Modifying the mode identification scheme to reject the worst fitting modes can bring some improvement but the results still remain poorer than in the case without chaotic modes
Self-trapping at the liquid vapor critical point
Experiments suggest that localization via self-trapping plays a central role
in the behavior of equilibrated low mass particles in both liquids and in
supercritical fluids. In the latter case, the behavior is dominated by the
liquid-vapor critical point which is difficult to probe, both experimentally
and theoretically. Here, for the first time, we present the results of
path-integral computations of the characteristics of a self-trapped particle at
the critical point of a Lennard-Jones fluid for a positive particle-atom
scattering length. We investigate the influence of the range of the
particle-atom interaction on trapping properties, and the pick-off decay rate

The clinical pharmacology of intranasal l-methamphetamine.
BackgroundWe studied the pharmacology of l-methamphetamine, the less abused isomer, when used as a nasal decongestant.Methods12 subjects self-administered l-methamphetamine from a nonprescription inhaler at the recommended dose (16 inhalations over 6 hours) then at 2 and 4 (32 and 64 inhalations) times this dose. In a separate session intravenous phenylephrine (200 microg) and l-methamphetamine (5 mg) were given to define alpha agonist pharmacology and bioavailability. Physiological, cardiovascular, pharmacokinetic, and subjective effects were measured.ResultsPlasma l-methamphetamine levels were often below the level of quantification so bioavailability was estimated by comparing urinary excretion of the intravenous and inhaled doses, yielding delivered dose estimates of 74.0 +/- 56.1, 124.7 +/- 106.6, and 268.1 +/- 220.5 microg for ascending exposures (mean 4.2 +/- 3.3 microg/inhalation). Physiological changes were minimal and not dose-dependent. Small decreases in stroke volume and cardiac output suggesting mild cardiodepression were seen.ConclusionInhaled l-methamphetamine delivered from a non-prescription product produced minimal effects but may be a cardiodepressant
Tethers in space handbook
The handbook provides a list and description of ongoing tether programs. This includes the joint U.S.-Italy demonstration project, and individual U.S. and Italian studies and demonstration programs. An overview of the current activity level and areas of emphasis in this emerging field is provided. The fundamental physical principles behind the proposed tether applications are addressed. Four basic concepts of gravity gradient, rotation, momentum exchange, and electrodynamics are discussed. Information extracted from literature, which supplements and enhances the tether applications is also presented. A bibliography is appended
General survey of solid-waste management
Potential ways of providing solid-waste management for a building complex serviced by a modular integrated utility system (MIUS) were explored. Literature surveys were conducted to investigate both conventional and unusual systems to serve this purpose. The advantages and disadvantages of the systems most compatible with MIUS are discussed
On the Space Time of a Galaxy
We present an exact solution of the averaged Einstein's field equations in
the presence of two real scalar fields and a component of dust with spherical
symmetry. We suggest that the space-time found provides the characteristics
required by a galactic model that could explain the supermassive central object
and the dark matter halo at once, since one of the fields constitutes a central
oscillaton surrounded by the dust and the other scalar field distributes far
from the coordinate center and can be interpreted as a halo. We show the
behavior of the rotation curves all along the background. Thus, the solution
