    Influence of tensor interactions on masses and decay widths of dibaryons

    The influence of gluon and Goldstone boson induced tensor interactions on the dibaryon masses and D-wave decay widths has been studied in the quark delocalization, color screening model. The effective S-D wave transition interactions induced by gluon and Goldstone boson exchanges decrease rapidly with increasing strangeness of the channel. The tensor contribution of K and η\eta mesons is negligible in this model. There is no six-quark state in the light flavor world studied so far that can become bound by means of these tensor interactions besides the deuteron. The partial D-wave decay widths of the IJp=1/22+IJ^p={1/2}2^+ NΩ\Omega state to spin 0 and 1 ΛΞ\Lambda\Xi final states are 12.0 keV and 21.9 keV respectively. This is a very narrow dibaryon resonance that might be detectable in relativistic heavy ion reactions by existing RHIC detectors through the reconstruction of the vertex mass of the decay product ΛΞ\Lambda\Xi and by the COMPAS detector at CERN or at JHF in Japan and the FAIR project in Germany in the future.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure

    Towards Long-endurance Flight: Design and Implementation of a Variable-pitch Gasoline-engine Quadrotor

    Majority of today's fixed-pitch, electric-power quadrotors have short flight endurance (<< 1 hour) which greatly limits their applications. This paper presents a design methodology for the construction of a long-endurance quadrotor using variable-pitch rotors and a gasoline-engine. The methodology consists of three aspects. Firstly, the rotor blades and gasoline engine are selected as a pair, so that sufficient lift can be comfortably provided by the engine. Secondly, drivetrain and airframe are designed. Major challenges include airframe vibration minimization and power transmission from one engine to four rotors while keeping alternate rotors contra-rotating. Lastly, a PD controller is tuned to facilitate preliminary flight tests. The methodology has been verified by the construction and successful flight of our gasoline quadrotor prototype, which is designed to have a flight time of 2 to 3 hours and a maximum take-off weight of 10 kg.Comment: 6 page

    Which Constituent Quark Model Is Better?

    A comparative study has been done by calculating the effective baryon-baryon interactions of the 64 lowest channels consisting of octet and decuplet baryons with three constituent quark models: the extended quark gluon exchange model, the Goldstone boson exchange model and the quark gluon meson exchange hybrid model.     COVID-19 detection and disease progression visualization: Deep learning on chest X-rays for classification and coarse localization

    Chest X-rays are playing an important role in the testing and diagnosis of COVID-19 disease in the recent pandemic. However, due to the limited amount of labelled medical images, automated classification of these images for positive and negative cases remains the biggest challenge in their reliable use in diagnosis and disease progression. We applied and implemented a transfer learning pipeline for classifying COVID-19 chest X-ray images from two publicly available chest X-ray datasets {https://github.com/ieee8023/covid-chestxray-dataset},{https://www.kaggle.com/paultimothymooney/chest-xray-pneumonia}}. The classifier effectively distinguishes inflammation in lungs due to COVID-19 and pneumonia (viral and bacterial) from the ones with no infection (normal). We have used multiple pre-trained convolutional backbones as the feature extractor and achieved an overall detection accuracy of 91.2% , 95.3%, 96.7% for the VGG16, ResNet50 and EfficientNetB0 backbones respectively. Additionally, we trained a generative adversarial framework (a cycleGAN) to generate and augment the minority COVID-19 class in our approach. For visual explanations and interpretation purposes, we visualized the regions of input that are important for predictions and a gradient class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) technique is used in the pipeline to produce a coarse localization map of the highlighted regions in the image. This activation map can be used to monitor affected lung regions during disease progression and severity stages

    Thymic epithelial cells play a crucial role in the selection of developing thymocytes. Thymocyte-epithelial cell interactions involve a number of adhesion molecules, including members of the integrin and immunoglobulin superfamilies. We found that human thymic epithelial cells synthesize an endogenous lectin, galectin-1, which binds to oligosaccharide ligands on the surface of thymocytes and T lymphoblastoid cells. Binding of T lymphoblastoid cells to thymic epithelial cells was inhibited by antibody to galectin-1 on the epithelial cells, and by two antibodies, T305 and 2B11, that recognize carbohydrate epitopes on the T cell surface glycoproteins CD43 and CD45, respectively. T lymphoblastoid cells and thymocytes bound recombinant galectin-1, as demonstrated by flow cytometric analysis, and lectin binding was completely inhibited in the presence of lactose. The degree of galectin-1 binding to thymocytes correlated with the maturation stage of the cells, as immature thymocytes bound more galectin-1 than did mature thymocytes. Preferential binding of galectin-1 to immature thymocytes may result from regulated expression of preferred oligosaccharide ligands on those cells, since we found that the epitope recognized by the T305 antibody, the core 2 O-glycan structure on CD43, was expressed on cortical, but not medullary cells. The level of expression of the UDP-GlcNAc:Gal beta 1,3GalNAc-R beta 1, 6GlcNAc transferase (core 2 beta 1, 6 GlcNAc transferase, or C2GnT), which creates the core 2 O-glycan structure, correlated with the glycosylation change between cortical and medullary cells. Expression of mRNA encoding the C2GnT was high in subcapsular and cortical thymocytes and low in medullary thymocytes, as demonstrated by in situ hybridization. These results suggest that galectin-1 participates in thymocyte-thymic epithelial cell interactions, and that this interaction may be regulated by expression of relevant oligosaccharide ligands on the thymocyte cell surface

    Normalized lowering and raising operators are constructed for the orthogonal group in the canonical group chain O(n) ⊃ O(n − 1) ⊃ 
 ⊃ O(2) with the aid of graphs which simplify their construction. By successive application of such lowering operators for O(n), O(n − 1), 
 on the highest weight states for each step of the chain, an explicit construction is given for the normalized basis vectors.
