PCAC Relation and Pion Production-Absorption in Nuclei
Nuclear PCAC relation is studied in the framework of the effective theory of
nuclear interaction, in which the interaction of real pion
production-absorption is expressed by many-body operators, and does not include
the one-nucleon operator as was assumed in the conventional works, while the
effective axial-vector current includes the one-nucleon current in contrast to
the former interaction. This problem is investigated under the simple linear
-model. Results are as folows: 1) The theory describes consistently the
PCAC relation and the pion production-absorption process. 2) The conventional
interpretation of the effective pion source function as the interaction
Hamiltonian of pion production-absorption does not hold. 3) The effective pion
source function still includes the one-nucleon operator for the pion
production-absorption at threshold effectively, which may justify the
conventional theory.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Accumulation horizons and period-adding in optically injected semiconductor lasers
We study the hierarchical structuring of islands of stable periodic
oscillations inside chaotic regions in phase diagrams of single-mode
semiconductor lasers with optical injection. Phase diagrams display remarkable
{\it accumulation horizons}: boundaries formed by the accumulation of infinite
cascades of self-similar islands of periodic solutions of ever-increasing
period. Each cascade follows a specific period-adding route. The riddling of
chaotic laser phases by such networks of periodic solutions may compromise
applications operating with chaotic signals such as e.g. secure communications.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, laser phase diagrams, to appear in Phys. Rev. E,

Giant Rashba splitting of quasi-1D surface states on Bi/InAs(110)-(21)
Electronic states on the Bi/InAs(110)-(21) surface and its
spin-polarized structure are revealed by angle-resolved photoelectron
spectroscopy (ARPES), spin-resolved ARPES, and density-functional-theory
calculation. The surface state showed quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) dispersion
and a nearly metallic character; the top of the hole-like surface band is just
below the Fermi level. The size of the Rashba parameter ()
reached quite a large value (5.5 eV\AA). The present result would provide
a fertile playground for further studies of the exotic electronic phenomena in
1D or Q1D systems with the spin-split electronic states as well as for advanced
spintronic devices.Comment: 8 pages (double column), 7 figures and 1 tabl
Orbifold Models in M-Theory
Among orbifold compactifications of -theory, we examine
models containing the particle physics Standard Model in four-dimensional
spacetimes, which appear as fixed subspaces of the ten-dimensional spacetimes
at each end of the interval, , spanning the
dimension. Using the projection to break the gauge symmetry in each
of the four-planes and a limiting relation to corresponding heterotic string
compactifications, we discuss the restrictions on the possible resulting gauge
field and matter spectra. In particular, some of the states are non-local: they
connect two four-dimensional Worlds across the dimension.
We illustrate our programmable calculations of the matter field spectrum,
including the anomalous U(1) factor which satisfies a universal Green-Schwarz
relation, discuss a Dynkin diagram technique to showcase a model with
gauge symmetry, and discuss generalizations to
higher order orbifolds.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables; LaTeX 3 time
Precision spectroscopy of pionic 1s states of Sn nuclei and evidence for partial restoration of chiral symmetry in the nuclear medium
Deeply bound 1s states of in Sn were preferentially
observed using the Sn(,He) pion-transfer reaction under the recoil-free
condition. The 1s binding energies and widths were precisely determined, and
were used to deduce the isovector parameter of the s-wave pion-nucleus
potential to be . The observed enhancement
of over the free value ()
indicates a reduction of the chiral order parameter, , at the normal nuclear density, .Comment: 4 pages including 3 postscript figures, RevTeX 4 with multirow.sty,

Examining exotic structure of proton-rich nucleus Al
The longitudinal momentum distribution (P_{//}) of fragments after one-proton
removal from ^{23} Al and reaction cross sections (\sigma_R) for
^{23,24} Al on carbon target at 74A MeV have been measured. The ^{23,24} Al
ions were produced through projectile fragmentation of 135 A MeV ^{28} Si
primary beam using RIPS fragment separator at RIKEN. P_{//} is measured by a
direct time-of-flight (TOF) technique, while \sigma_R is determined using a
transmission method. An enhancement in \sigma_R is observed for ^{23} Al
compared with ^{24} Al. The P_{//} for ^{22} Mg fragments from ^{23} Al breakup
has been obtained for the first time. FWHM of the distributions has been
determined to be 232 \pm 28 MeV/c. The experimental data are discussed by using
Few-Body Glauber model. Analysis of P_{//} demonstrates a dominant d-wave
configuration for the valence proton in ground state of ^{23} Al, indicating
that ^{23} Al is not a proton halo nucleus
The magnetic properties of Hf and Hf in the strong coupling deformed model
This paper reports NMR measurements of the magnetic dipole moments of two
high-K isomers, the 37/2, 51.4 m, 2740 keV state in Hf and the
8, 5.5 h, 1142 keV state in Hf by the method of on-line nuclear
orientation. Also included are results on the angular distributions of gamma
transitions in the decay of the Hf isotope. These yield high
precision E2/M1 multipole mixing ratios for transitions in bands built on the
23/2, 1.1 s, isomer at 1315 keV and on the 9/2, 0.663 ns, isomer at 321
keV. The new results are discussed in the light of the recently reported
finding of systematic dependence of the behavior of the g parameter
upon the quasi-proton and quasi-neutron make up of high-K isomeric states in
this region.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review
Influence of SIGLEC9 polymorphisms on COPD phenotypes including exacerbation frequency.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The exacerbation-prone phenotype of COPD is particularly important, as exacerbations lead to poor quality of life and disease progression. We previously found that COPD patients who lack Siglec-14, a myeloid cell protein that recognizes bacteria and triggers inflammatory responses, are less prone to exacerbation. We hypothesized that the variations in other SIGLEC genes could also influence COPD exacerbation frequency, and investigated the association between SIGLEC9 polymorphisms and the exacerbation-prone phenotype of COPD. METHODS: We examined whether SIGLEC9 polymorphisms affect the frequency of COPD exacerbation in 135 subjects within our study population, and also analysed the correlation between the genotypes and the severity of airflow obstruction and emphysema in 362 Japanese smokers including 244 COPD patients. The association between these single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and COPD phenotypes were also assessed in a Caucasian population of ECLIPSE study. The effects of these coding SNPs (cSNPs) on Siglec-9 protein functions were analysed using in vitro assays. RESULTS: The G allele of rs2075803 and rs2075803 G/rs2258983 A(GA) haplotype in SIGLEC9 was associated with higher frequency of exacerbations and the extent of emphysema in COPD. These results did not replicate in the ECLIPSE study. A myeloid cell line expressing the Siglec-9 variant corresponding to GA haplotype produced more TNF-α than the one expressing the variant corresponding to the other major haplotype. CONCLUSION: The SIGLEC9 rs2075803 G/rs2258983 A haplotype, which corresponds to a Siglec-9 variant that is less effective at suppressing inflammatory response, may be a risk factor for the development of emphysema
