    Effects of ripening stages and of plant vegetative vigor on the phenolic composition of grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) cv. Cabernet Sauvignon in the Maipo Valley (Chile)

    Quantitative changes in the composition of phenolic compounds in skins and seeds were determined during ripening of grape of Cabernet Sauvignon vines growing with low, medium or high vigor. Compounds in the skins were gallic and syringic acid, (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, quercetin-3-galactoside, quercetin-3-rutinoside, quercetin-3-arabinglucoside, quercetin-3-glucoside, and quercetin-3-rhamnoside, kaempferol-3-rutinoside and kaempferol-3-glucoside. The following compounds were identified in seeds: gallic acid, (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, and procyanidins B1, B2, B3 and B4. The composition of compounds depended on the stage of ripening and vigor. No clear relationship was found between groups of compounds.

    Sublittoral soft bottom communities and diversity of Mejillones Bay in northern Chile (Humboldt Current upwelling system)

    The macrozoobenthos of Mejillones Bay (23°S; Humboldt Current) was quantitatively investigated over a 7-year period from austral summer 1995/1996 to winter 2002. About 78 van Veen grab samples taken at six stations (5, 10, 20 m depth) provided the basis for the analysis of the distribution of 60 species and 28 families of benthic invertebrates, as well as of their abundance and biomass. Mean abundance (2,119 individuals m-2) was in the same order compared to a previous investigation; mean biomass (966 g formalin wet mass m-2), however, exceeded prior estimations mainly due to the dominance of the bivalve Aulacomya ater. About 43% of the taxa inhabited the complete depth range. Mean taxonomic Shannon diversity (H', Log e) was 1.54 ± 0.58 with a maximum at 20 m (1.95 ± 0.33); evenness increased with depth. The fauna was numerically dominated by carnivorous gastropods, polychaetes and crustaceans (48%). About 15% of the species were suspensivorous, 13% sedimentivorous, 11% detritivorous, 7% omnivorous and 6% herbivorous. Cluster analyses showed a significant difference between the shallow and the deeper stations. Gammarid amphipods and the polychaete family Nephtyidae characterized the 5-mzone, the molluscs Aulacomya ater, Mitrella unifasciata and gammarids the intermediate zone, while the gastropod Nassarius gayi and the polychaete family Nereidae were most prominent at the deeper stations. The communities of the three depth zones did not appear to be limited by hypoxia during non-El Niño conditions. Therefore, no typical change in community structure occurred during El Niño 1997–1998, in contrast to what was observed for deeper faunal assemblages and hypoxic bays elsewhere in the coastal Humboldt Current system

    First Latin American clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus: Latin American Group for the Study of Lupus (GLADEL, Grupo Latino Americano de Estudio del Lupus)-Pan-American League of Associations of Rheumatology (PANLAR)

    Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a complex and heterogeneous autoimmune disease, represents a significant challenge for both diagnosis and treatment. Patients with SLE in Latin America face special problems that should be considered when therapeutic guidelines are developed. The objective of the study is to develop clinical practice guidelines for Latin American patients with lupus. Two independent teams (rheumatologists with experience in lupus management and methodologists) had an initial meeting in Panama City, Panama, in April 2016. They selected a list of questions for the clinical problems most commonly seen in Latin American patients with SLE. These were addressed with the best available evidence and summarised in a standardised format following the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. All preliminary findings were discussed in a second face-to-face meeting in Washington, DC, in November 2016. As a result, nine organ/system sections are presented with the main findings; an 'overarching' treatment approach was added. Special emphasis was made on regional implementation issues. Best pharmacologic options were examined for musculoskeletal, mucocutaneous, kidney, cardiac, pulmonary, neuropsychiatric, haematological manifestations and the antiphospholipid syndrome. The roles of main therapeutic options (ie, glucocorticoids, antimalarials, immunosuppressant agents, therapeutic plasma exchange, belimumab, rituximab, abatacept, low-dose aspirin and anticoagulants) were summarised in each section. In all cases, benefits and harms, certainty of the evidence, values and preferences, feasibility, acceptability and equity issues were considered to produce a recommendation with special focus on ethnic and socioeconomic aspects.     A survey of phenolic compounds in Spanish wines of different geographical origin

    The phenolic composition of red and white wines from four Spanish Appellations of Origin (official classification of Spanish wines) was investigated. Different hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids, catechins, procyanidins, alcohols, stilbenes and flavonols were identified. Additionally, the ketone 2,3-dihydroxy-1-guaiacylpropan-1-one was identified for the first time in red wines aged in oak barrels. The concentration of most of the phenolic compounds quantified was higher in red wines than in white wines, as would be expected from the different methods of vinification and the grape varieties used. These differences could also contribute to differences in the antioxidant ability of these wines. The multivariate analysis applied to the phenolic compounds quantified allowed the relationships among these compounds to be examined and the origin of the wines to be distinguished. © Springer-Verlag 2000

    Phenolic compound composition in immature seeds of fava bean (Vicia faba L.) varieties cultivated in Chile

However, there is a lack of information about the phenolic composition of some important edible varieties. Polyphenols in fava beans are located in several parts of the plant (e.g. leaves, roots and seeds) but their occurrence in immature seeds is most important for human nutrition. The objective of this work was to study the phenolic composition of the major groups of polyphenols in 10 varieties of immature fava beans. Total phenolics ranged from 817 to 1337. mg gallic-acid equivalent per kilogram and condensed tannin content ranged from 309 to 958. mg (+)-catechin equivalent per kilogram. Different procyanidins, prodelphinidins, flavonols and flavones were identified using high performance liquid chromatography. Mean levels of total proanthocyanidins were 2233 mg/kg while the sum of flavonols and flavones was 252. mg/kg. The results from this study revealed clear differences in the phenolic composition among different varieties of immature V. faba L. seeds and demonstrates that there is ample phenotypic variability for future selections studies for traits such as nutritional value, taste, and ease of production.This work is a part of Project FIA-PI-C-2005-1-A-15, supported by the Chilean “Fundación para la Innovación Agraria”.Peer reviewe

    Low molecular weight phenols in cork stoppers

    In this work, we study the low molecular-weight polyphenols in cork stoppers obtained from commercial wine bottles and in samples taken at five stages of the cork stopper manufacturing process. The phenolic compounds (acids, aldehydes, and coumarins) were analyzed by high pressure liquid chromatography with photodiode array detector. The results were studied by statistical methods in order to determine the relationship among these compounds and their variability throughout the industrial processing. Discriminant analysis showed that the phenolic composition allows differentiation of each stage in the manufacture of cork stoppers and the different provenances of stoppers obtained from commercial wine bottles.     Presence of cork-taint responsible compounds in wines and their cork stoppers

    Chloroanisoles [2,4-dichloroanisole, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA), 2,3,4,6-tetrachloroanisole and pentachloroanisole], chlorophenols [2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol and pentachlorophenol (PCP)] and guaiacol were detected in red and white cork-tainted bottled wines. These compounds were also found in the cork stoppers from those bottles. A significant correlation was found between TCA in wines and TCA in cork stoppers, and between TCA in wine and intensity of cork taint. At low levels of TCA, the presence of guaiacol or PCP were also found to influence in cork taint. © Springer-Verlag 2000
