    Kestrel Results at Liftoff Conditions for a Space Launch System Configuration in Proximity to the Launch Tower

    Aerodynamic data books for Space Launch System vehicles require databases for the integrated forces and moments and section loads during liftoff and transition to the ascent phase of flight. While the force and moment database can be generated from wind tunnel results, computational analyses are necessary to provide the extensive surface information required to generate proper lineloads. Of the two flight regimes, the liftoff problem is the more costly and complex situation to simulate, as it requires modeling of the vehicle in proximity to the launch tower. The effects of massive separation on the leeward pressure fields of both the tower and vehicle are not well captured with RANS methods, necessitating the use of more advanced methods, such as Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation, in conjunction with computational grids sufficiently refined to resolve the wakes. Details on the computational setup for employing the Kestrel flow solver to address the liftoff problem are presented. The methodology involves the use of independent unstructured near-body grids for the vehicle and the tower, overset by a solution adaptive Cartesian off-body grid. Results from the simulations are compared to experime ASA Langley Research Center 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel

    Multi-Axis Identifiability Using Single-Surface Parameter Estimation Maneuvers on the X-48B Blended Wing Body

    The problem of parameter estimation on hybrid-wing-body type aircraft is complicated by the fact that many design candidates for such aircraft involve a large number of aero- dynamic control effectors that act in coplanar motion. This fact adds to the complexity already present in the parameter estimation problem for any aircraft with a closed-loop control system. Decorrelation of system inputs must be performed in order to ascertain individual surface derivatives with any sort of mathematical confidence. Non-standard control surface configurations, such as clamshell surfaces and drag-rudder modes, further complicate the modeling task. In this paper, asymmetric, single-surface maneuvers are used to excite multiple axes of aircraft motion simultaneously. Time history reconstructions of the moment coefficients computed by the solved regression models are then compared to each other in order to assess relative model accuracy. The reduced flight-test time required for inner surface parameter estimation using multi-axis methods was found to come at the cost of slightly reduced accuracy and statistical confidence for linear regression methods. Since the multi-axis maneuvers captured parameter estimates similar to both longitudinal and lateral-directional maneuvers combined, the number of test points required for the inner, aileron-like surfaces could in theory have been reduced by 50%. While trends were similar, however, individual parameters as estimated by a multi-axis model were typically different by an average absolute difference of roughly 15-20%, with decreased statistical significance, than those estimated by a single-axis model. The multi-axis model exhibited an increase in overall fit error of roughly 1-5% for the linear regression estimates with respect to the single-axis model, when applied to flight data designed for each, respectively

    Modeling the effects of density dependent emigration, weak Allee effects, and matrix hostility on patch-level population persistence

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0) The relationship between conspecific density and the probability of emigrating from a patch can play an essential role in determining the population-dynamic consequences of an Allee effect. In this paper, we model a population that inside a patch is diffusing and growing according to a weak Allee effect per-capita growth rate, but the emigration probability is dependent on conspecific density. The habitat patch is one-dimensional and is surrounded by a tuneable hostile matrix. We consider five different forms of density dependent emigration (DDE) that have been noted in previous empirical studies. Our models predict that at the patch-level, DDE forms that have a positive slope will counteract Allee effects, whereas, DDE forms with a negative slope will enhance them. Also, DDE can have profound effects on the dynamics of a population, including producing very complicated population dynamics with multiple steady states whose density profile can be either symmetric or asymmetric about the center of the patch. Our results are obtained mathematically through the method of sub-super solutions, time map analysis, and numerical computations using Wolfram Mathematica

    Age of Information in a SWIPT and URLLC enabled Wireless Communications System

    This paper estimates the freshness of the information in a wireless relay communication system that employs simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) operating under ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) constraints. The Age of Information (AoI) metric calculates the time difference between the current time and the timestamp of the most recent update received by the receiver is used here to estimate the freshness of information. The short packet communication scheme is used to fulfil the reliability and latency requirements of the proposed wireless network and its performance is analysed using finite block length theory. In addition, by utilising novel approximation approaches, expressions for the average AoI (AAoI) of the proposed system are derived. Finally, numerical analysis is used to evaluate and validate derived results

    Genetic diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Peru and exploration of phylogenetic associations with drug resistance.

    BACKGROUND: There is limited available data on the strain diversity of M tuberculosis in Peru, though there may be interesting lessons to learn from a setting where multidrug resistant TB has emerged as a major problem despite an apparently well-functioning DOTS control programme. METHODS: Spoligotyping was undertaken on 794 strains of M tuberculosis collected between 1999 and 2005 from 553 community-based patients and 241 hospital-based HIV co-infected patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in Lima, Peru. Phylogenetic and epidemiologic analyses permitted identification of clusters and exploration of spoligotype associations with drug resistance. RESULTS: Mean patient age was 31.9 years, 63% were male and 30.4% were known to be HIV+. Rifampicin mono-resistance, isoniazid mono-resistance and multidrug resistance (MDR) were identified in 4.7%, 8.7% and 17.3% of strains respectively. Of 794 strains from 794 patients there were 149 different spoligotypes. Of these there were 27 strains (3.4%) with novel, unique orphan spoligotypes. 498 strains (62.7%) were clustered in the nine most common spoligotypes: 16.4% SIT 50 (clade H3), 12.3% SIT 53 (clade T1), 8.3% SIT 33 (LAM3), 7.4% SIT 42 (LAM9), 5.5% SIT 1 (Beijing), 3.9% SIT 47 (H1), 3.0% SIT 222 (clade unknown), 3.0% SIT1355 (LAM), and 2.8% SIT 92 (X3). Amongst HIV-negative community-based TB patients no associations were seen between drug resistance and specific spoligotypes; in contrast HIV-associated MDRTB, but not isoniazid or rifampicin mono-resistance, was associated with SIT42 and SIT53 strains. CONCLUSION: Two spoligotypes were associated with MDR particularly amongst patients with HIV. The MDR-HIV association was significantly reduced after controlling for SIT42 and SIT53 status; residual confounding may explain the remaining apparent association. These data are suggestive of a prolonged, clonal, hospital-based outbreak of MDR disease amongst HIV patients but do not support a hypothesis of strain-specific propensity for the acquisition of resistance-conferring mutations
