    Individual Differences in (Non-Visual) Processing Style Predict the Face Inversion Effect

    Recent research suggests that individuals with relatively weak global precedence (i.e., a smaller propensity to view visual stimuli in a configural manner) show a reduced face inversion effect (FIE). Coupled with such findings, a number of recent studies have demonstrated links between an advantage for feature-based processing and the presentation of traits associated with autism among the general population. The present study sought to bridge these findings by investigating whether a relationship exists between the possession of autism-associated traits (i.e., as indicated by individualsautism quotient [(AQ) and the size of the FIE. Participants completed an on-line study in which the AQ was measured prior to a standard face recognition task where half of the faces were inverted at test. The results confirmed that higher AQ levels were predictive of smaller FIEs. Implications for a common underlying factor relating to processing orientation are discussed

    Transmission Expansion Planning Considering Energy Storage

    In electricity transmission networks, energy storage systems (ESS) provide a means of upgrade deferral by smoothing supply and matching demand. We develop a mixed integer programming (MIP) extension to the transmission network expansion planning (TEP) problem that considers the installation and operation of ESS as well as additional circuits. The model is demonstrated on the well known Garver's 6-bus and IEEE 25-bus test circuits for two 24 hour operating scenarios; a short peak, and a long peak. We show optimal location and capacity of storage is sensitive not only to cost, but also variability of demand in the network

    Structural and thermal response of 30 cm diameter ion thruster optics

    Tabular and graphical data are presented which are intended for use in calibrating and validating structural and thermal models of ion thruster optics. A 30 cm diameter, two electrode, mercury ion thruster was operated using two different electrode assembly designs. With no beam extraction, the transient and steady state temperature profiles and center electrode gaps were measured for three discharge powers. The data showed that the electrode mount design had little effect on the temperatures, but significantly impacted the motion of the electrode center. Equilibrium electrode gaps increased with one design and decreased with the other. Equilibrium displacements in excess of 0.5 mm and gap changes of 0.08 mm were measured at 450 W discharge power. Variations in equilibrium gaps were also found among assemblies of the same design. The presented data illustrate the necessity for high fidelity ion optics models and development of experimental techniques to allow their validation

    Until relatively recent times, the generally accepted rule was that a corporation could not merge, consolidate or sell all of its assets without the unanimous consent of its stockholders. Each stockholder was accordingly vested with an individual right of veto over any such corporate action from which that stockholder might dissent. In order to eliminate this shackle on corporate activity, state legislatures enacted legislation permitting corporations to enter into such so-called extraordinary transactions as mergers, consolidations and sales of all or substantially all of the corporate assets upon some specified majority vote of all of its stockholders. The price extracted for this accommodation is the ability of dissenting stockholders to perfect a right to object that would enable their stock interests to be repurchased by the corporation for the value of that interest

We evaluated decisions taken by clinicians and parents in PICU on co-enrolment for two large pragmatic trials: the CATCH trial (CATheters in CHildren) comparing impregnated with standard central venous catheters (CVCs) for reducing bloodstream infection in PICU and the CHIP trial comparing tight versus standard control of hyperglycaemia

    Zebrafish-Based Small Molecule Discovery

    AbstractThe earliest examples of small molecule discovery involved serendipitous phenotypic observations in whole organisms, but this organism-based process has given way in recent decades to systematic, high-throughput assays using purified proteins, cells, or cell extracts. In vitro screens have been successful at identifying modifiers of well-understood biological processes, but they are limited in their ability to discover modifiers of processes that are poorly understood or occur only in an integrated physiological context. Small model organisms, especially the zebrafish, make it possible to combine the advantages of organism-based small molecule discovery with the technologies and throughput of modern screening. The combination of model organisms with high-throughput screening is likely to extend small molecule discovery efforts to fields of study such as developmental biology and to broaden the range of diseases for which drug screening can be performed

    Tomography of a High-Purity Narrowband Photon From a Transient Atomic Collective Excitation

    We demonstrate the efficient heralded generation of high purity narrow-bandwidth single photons from a transient collective spin excitation in a hot atomic vapour cell. Employing optical homodyne tomography, we fully reconstruct the density matrix of the generated photon and observe a Wigner function reaching the zero value without correcting for any inefficiencies. The narrow bandwidth of the photon produced is accompanied by a high generation rate yielding a high spectral brightness. The source is therefore compatible with atomic-based quantum memories as well as other applications in light-atom interfacing.
