    Longitudinal phase space manipulation in energy recovering linac-driven free-electron lasers

    Energy recovering an electron beam after it has participated in a free-electron laser (FEL) interaction can be quite challenging because of the substantial FEL-induced energy spread and the energy anti-damping that occurs during deceleration. In the Jefferson Lab infrared FEL driver-accelerator, such an energy recovery scheme was implemented by properly matching the longitudinal phase space throughout the recirculation transport by employing the so-called energy compression scheme. In the present paper,after presenting a single-particle dynamics approach of the method used to energy-recover the electron beam, we report on experimental validation of the method obtained by measurements of the so-called "compression efficiency" and "momentum compaction" lattice transfer maps at different locations in the recirculation transport line.     Impact of macro-socioeconomic determinants on perinatal healthcare quality for very preterm infants

    The WHO identified the importance of macro-socioeconomic determinants and the political context as interlinked key factors affecting health equity. The 2008 economic crisis was associated with a significant low-birth-weight increase in Portugal, 2007-2014. The Economic Adjustment Programme (EAP), implemented to economize non-essential health care costs (2011-2014), substantially affected healthcare delivery and occupational environment of Healthcare Professionals (HCPs). This study aims to analyse the impact observed by HCPs of the economic crisis and EAP on equitable quality of perinatal healthcare for very preterm infants in Portugal. A Qualitative study design with 21 HCPs in clinical settings equally distributed among Portuguese mainland were selected according to their response. Semi-structured interviews were conducted between October 2018-April 2019 until saturation point was achieved. A content analysis was performed using Nvivo2011 software. Preliminary results on macro-socioeconomic determinants, classified and conceptualized into a three-stage-effect framework, disclosed an interrelation between factors impacting perinatal healthcare quality, according to HCPs. Primary-stage: increase in working hours and patient-ratio per HCPs, cuts in salaries and investment, increasing waiting time and HCPs demotivation. Secondary-stage: burnout, work-absence, time constraints, decreasing quality and consultation availability. Tertiary-stage: HCPs Brain-drain to private sector, double-shifts in public-private sector, increasing inadequacy of transmissivity within sector communication. The economic crisis and EAP were perceived to have modified equitable perinatal healthcare quality for very preterm infants in Portugal. Increased private-public sector transparency to maximise quality assurance, equal HCP wage distribution to sustain capability, strengthening of social maternity protection strategies to enhance socioeconomic equity in perinatal healthcare, is recommended

    Young Individuals Are More Stable and Stand More Upright When Using Rollator Assistance During Standing up and Sitting Down

However, limited biomechanical studies have been performed to understand how rollator support affects posture and stability, especially when standing up and sitting down. Therefore, this study examined how stability and posture change with varying levels of rollator support and on an unstable floor. The aim was to collect comprehensive baseline data during standing up and sitting down in young participants. In this study, 20 able-bodied, young participants stood up and sat down both 1) unassisted and assisted using a custom-made robot rollator simulator under 2) full support and 3) touch support. Unassisted and assisted performances were analyzed on normal and unstable floors using balance pads with a compliant surface under each foot. Using 3D motion capturing and two ground-embedded force plates, we compared assistive support and floor conditions for movement duration, the relative timing of seat-off, movement stability (center of pressure (COP) path length and sway area), and posture after standing up (lower body sagittal joint angles) using ANOVA analysis. The relative event of seat-off was earliest under full support compared to touch and unassisted conditions under normal but not under unstable floor conditions. The duration of standing up and sitting down did not differ between support conditions on normal or unstable floors. COP path length and sway area during both standing up and sitting down were lowest under full support regardless of both floor conditions. Hip and knee joints were least flexed under full support, with no differences between touch and unassisted in both floor conditions. Hence, full rollator support led to increased movement stability, while not slowing down the movement, during both standing up and sitting down. During standing up, the full support led to an earlier seat-off and a more upright standing posture when reaching a stable stance. These results indicate that rollator support when handles are correctly aligned does not lead to the detrimental movement alterations of increased forward-leaning. Future research aims to verify these findings in older persons with stability and muscle weakness deficiencies

    Pilot Evaluation of the Stop, Breathe & Think Mindfulness App for Student Clients on a College Counseling Center Waitlist

    Objectives: College counseling centers face significant challenges meeting the mental health needs of their students and waitlists are common. Mobile apps offer a promising solution to increase access to resources while students wait for services. Methods: This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of a publicly available mindfulness app. Students on a counseling center waitlist (n=23) were randomized to use the app or not, with assessments completed over four weeks. Results: Recruitment over three semesters was slow, leading to an underpowered trial. Participants reported high satisfaction and moderate app usage. Very preliminary support was found for potential app efficacy relative to the control condition, particularly for depression, anxiety, and overall distress. Weaker, mixed effects were found for mindfulness and values processes. Conclusions: Overall, these results provide mixed findings suggesting the potential benefits, but also challenges in using a mindfulness app for students waiting to receive counseling services

    Psychological Inflexibility Predicts Suicidality Over Time in College Students

    Objective: It is essential to identify modifiable risk factors that can be targeted to reduce suicidal ideation (SI) and behavior in college students. Psychological inflexibility, a pattern of responding to internal experiences in a literal and rigid way, and attempting to control those experiences even when it interferes with valued living, could theoretically lead to SI or increase its intensity. Method: Psychological inflexibility and its component processes were tested as a predictor of SI in a longitudinal survey of college students (n = 603, age M = 20.62, 68.9% female, and 94.0% White) in a series of cross-sectional and longitudinal hierarchical regression models, controlling for relevant predictors such as distress and baseline SI. Interactions were also tested between psychological inflexibility and distress, cognitive defusion, values obstruction, and values progress in predicting SI. Results: Psychological inflexibility predicted SI cross-sectionally and longitudinally, controlling for distress and baseline SI. Psychological inflexibility interacted with distress, cognitive fusion, and values progress such that distress, cognitive fusion, and values progress had the strongest association with suicidal ideation among those who were high in psychological inflexibility. Conclusions: Psychological inflexibility may be a useful mechanism to target for suicide prevention in college students

    Quantifying the effect of status in a multi-tier loyalty program

    Multi-Tier Loyalty Programs (MTLPs) have become a popular marketing instrument to develop customer-firm relationships. Within a MTLP, customers are assigned to different tiers based on their purchase behavior. In this article, we examine whether and when tiers in the MTLP are effective in influencing customer purchase behavior, specifically share of wallet (SOW). A unique business-to-business dataset of a firm in the German agricultural market from 2009 to 2017 is used for the analysis. Data is available on the customer-specific tier level in the MTLP each year. We utilize a Tobit-style panel regression model for the analysis which is inspired by the Regression Discontinuity Design approach. This study makes several important contributions. First, it examines the effect of status in MTLPs and uses causal design to quantify the hitherto intangible effect of customer tiers. Second, this study reveals important insights on how the tier levels interact with other drivers of customer-firm relationships. Third, we use an interesting dataset from a B2B market and thereby contribute to the limited existing literature on the effectiveness of loyalty programs in B2B markets. Armed with a new understanding of how customers respond to tier levels or the negative effects of tenure especially in the highest tier, academics and managers gain new perspectives of whether and how loyalty programs affect customer behavior and drive desired outcomes in the marketplace. © 202
