Ultrapure glass optical waveguide: Development in microgravity by the sol gel process

    Get PDF
The sol-gel process for the preparation of homogeneous gels in three binary oxide systems was investigated. The glass forming ability of certain compositions in the selected oxide systems (SiO-GeO2, GeO2-PbO, and SiO2-TiO2) were studied based on their potential importance in the design of optical waveguide at longer wavelengths

Dynamical phase transition of a 1D transport process including death

Motivated by biological aspects related to fungus growth, we consider the competition of growth and corrosion. We study a modification of the totally asymmetric exclusion process, including the probabilities of injection α\alpha and death of the last particle δ\delta. The system presents a phase transition at δc(α)\delta_c(\alpha), where the average position of the last particle grows as t\sqrt{t}. For δ>δc\delta>\delta_c, a non equilibrium stationary state exists while for δ<δc\delta<\delta_c the asymptotic state presents a low density and max current phases. We discuss the scaling of the density and current profiles for parallel and sequential updates.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Gap equation in scalar field theory at finite temperature

We investigate the two-loop gap equation for the thermal mass of hot massless g2ϕ4g^2\phi^4 theory and find that the gap equation itself has a non-zero finite imaginary part. This indicates that it is not possible to find the real thermal mass as a solution of the gap equation beyond g2g^2 order in perturbation theory. We have solved the gap equation and obtain the real and the imaginary part of the thermal mass which are correct up to g4g^4 order in perturbation theory.Comment: 13 pages, Latex with axodraw, Minor corrections, Appendix adde

Systematic study of magnetic linear dichroism and birefringence in (Ga,Mn)As

    Get PDF
Magnetic linear dichroism and birefringence in (Ga,Mn)As epitaxial layers is investigated by measuring the polarization plane rotation of reflected linearly polarized light when magnetization lies in the plane of the sample. We report on the spectral dependence of the rotation and ellipticity angles in a broad energy range of 0.12-2.7 eV for a series of optimized samples covering a wide range on Mn-dopings and Curie temperatures and find a clear blue shift of the dominant peak at energy exceeding the host material band gap. These results are discussed in the general context of the GaAs host band structure and also within the framework of the k.p and mean-field kinetic-exchange model of the (Ga,Mn)As band structure. We find a semi-quantitative agreement between experiment and theory and discuss the role of disorder-induced non-direct transitions on magneto-optical properties of (Ga,Mn)As.Comment: 18 page

OSETI with STACEE: A Search for Nanosecond Optical Transients from Nearby Stars

We have used the STACEE high-energy gamma-ray detector to look for fast blue-green laser pulses from the vicinity of 187 stars. The STACEE detector offers unprecedented light-collecting capability for the detection of nanosecond pulses from such lasers. We estimate STACEE's sensitivity to be approximately 10 photons per square meter at a wavelength of 420 nm. The stars have been chosen because their characteristics are such that they may harbor habitable planets and they are relatively close to Earth. Each star was observed for 10 minutes and we found no evidence for laser pulses in any of the data sets.Comment: 38 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in Astrobiolog
