A granular cell tumor: an unusual colon polyp
We read with interest the article by Sevilla Ribota et al1 that described an unexpected finding of a granular cell tumour (GCT) of the rectum, which was removed by band ligation-assisted mucosectomy. We present a similar case of a GCT of the cecum, which was resected using a different endoscopic procedure.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Improving the Knowledge on Seismogenic Sources in the Lower Tagus Valley for Seismic Hazard Purposes
The Lower Tagus Valley, that includes the metropolitan area of Lisbon, has been struck by several earthquakes which produced significant material damage and loss of lives. Their exact location remains unknown. Our goal is to shed some light into the seismogenic sources in the area using seismic reflection and geological data. In areas with no seismic coverage, potential-field data interpretation was carried out. Seismicity was overlaid to the potential seismogenic structures and high-resolution data was acquired in order to confirm which structures have been active into the Quaternary. Three major fault-zones affecting the Neogene were identified: V. F. Xira, Samora-Alcochete and Pinhal Novo. For the first fault, strong evidences suggest it is active. The other two fault-zones and other structures previously unknown can be correlated with several epicentres. Empirical relationships between maximum moment magnitude and fault area indicate that MW > 6.5 earthquakes can be expected for the larger structures
Fault accommodation controller under Markovian jump linear systems with asynchronous modes
We tackle the fault accommodation control (FAC) in the Markovian jump linear system (MJLS) framework for the discrete-time domain, under the assumption that it is not possible to access the Markov chain mode. This premise brings some challenges since the controllers are no longer allowed to depend on the Markov chain, meaning that there is an asynchronism between the system and the controller modes. To tackle this issue, a hidden Markov chain ((Formula presented.), (Formula presented.)) is used where θ(k) denotes the Markov chain mode, and (Formula presented.) denotes the estimated mode. The main novelty of this work is the design of H∞ and H2 FAC under the MJLS framework considering partial observation of the Markov chain. Both designs are obtained via bilinear matrix inequalities optimization problems, which are solved using coordinate descent algorithm. As secondary results, we present simulations using a two-degree of freedom serial flexible joint robot to illustrate the viability of the proposed approach
Evaluation of wheat germplasm from the Madeira and Canary archipelagos using a single molecular marker. A rapid screening method for identification of durum wheat accessions
This work aims to present a rapid and precise screening method of wheat germplasm and identification of durum wheat accessions in germplasm collections. Fifty-two wheat accessions
maintained in the ISOPlexis germplasm bank at the Madeira University, Portugal, and 72 accessions from the Centre for Conservation of Crop Biodiversity of Tenerife (CCBAT), Spain,
have been screened for their specific ploidy status using the molecular marker Dgas44. We
have demonstrated that the Dgas44 sequence is effective in the screening of Madeiran and
Canarian wheat accessions. This screening method permitted the detection of 10 and 11 durum
accessions among Madeiran and Canarian wheats, accounting for 19.2 and 15.3% of screened
collections, respectively. The obtained results have shown a 100% of cases correspondence
with the previously performed morphological identification of the Madeiran wheats. It also
permitted rectification and clarification of previous classification of some accessions based
only on the morphological traits. The PCR based assay was directly applicable to the screening
of seeds and was suitable for detecting seed mixtures in accessions. This rapid method has
been proven to be a useful tool in gene bank accessions management including verification of
their ploidy status and detection of seed lots adulteration.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Detection Of Somatic Mutations Of The Pig-a Gene In Brazilian Patients With Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria.
Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is an acquired clonal syndrome characterized by intravascular hemolysis mediated by complement, thrombotic events and alterations in hematopoiesis. Basically, the molecular events which underlie the complexity of the syndrome consist of the absence of the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor as a consequence of somatic mutations in the PIG-A gene, located on the X chromosome. The GPI group is responsible for the attachment of many proteins to the cytoplasmic membrane. Two of them, CD55 and CD59, have a major role in the inhibition of the action of complement on the cellular membrane of blood cells. The absence of GPI biosynthesis can lead to PNH. Since mutations in the PIG-A gene are always present in patients with PNH, the aim of this study was to characterize the mutations in the PIG-A gene in Brazilian patients. The analysis of the PIG-A gene was performed using DNA samples derived from bone marrow and peripheral blood. Conformation-sensitive gel electrophoresis was used for screening the mutation and sequencing methods were used to identify the mutations. Molecular analysis permitted the identification of three point mutations in three patients: one G-->A transition in the 5' portion of the second intron, one T-->A substitution in the second base of codon 430 (Leu430-->stop), and one deletion DeltaA in the third base of codon 63. This study represents the first description of mutations in the PIG-A gene in a Brazilian population.34763-
Volatilização de amônia de fontes nitrogenadas em feijoeiro irrigado no sistema plantio direto.
