Functional clues for hypothetical proteins based on genomic context analysis in prokaryotes
Three integrated genomic context methods were used to annotate uncharacterized proteins in 102 bacterial genomes. Of 7853 orthologous groups with unknown function containing 45,110 proteins, 1738 groups could be linked to functionally associated partners. In many cases, those partners are uncharacterized themselves (hinting at newly identified modules) or have been described in general terms only. However, we were able to assign pathways, cellular processes or physical complexes for 273 groups (encompassing 3624 previously functionally uncharacterized proteins)
Exploring the chemical fate of the sulfate radical anion by reaction with sulfur dioxide in the gas phase
iPath3.0: interactive pathways explorer v3
iPath3.0 (http://pathways.embl.de) is a web-application for the visualization and analysis of cellular pathways. It is freely available and open to everyone. Currently it is based on four KEGG global maps, which summarize up to 158 traditional KEGG pathway maps, 192 KEGG modules and other metabolic elements into one connected and manually curated metabolic network. Users can fully customize these networks and interactively explore them through its redesigned, fast and lightweight interface, which highlights general metabolic trends in multi-omics data. It also offers navigation at various levels of details to help users further investigate those trends and ultimately uncover novel biological insights. Support for multiple experimental conditions and time-series datasets, tools for generation of customization data, programmatic access, and a free user accounts system were introduced in this version to further streamline its workflow
Assessing the winter hardiness of perennial cereal rye relative to winter cereals traditionally grown in western Canada
Non-Peer ReviewedPerennial cereal (PC) rye (Secale cereale x S. montanum) is reported to be a three to four year perennial forage crop. At AAFC-Swift Current, SK, PC rye was compared to three winter triticale varieties (Pika, Prego, and Bobcat), CDC Clair winter wheat and Prima fall rye for winter hardiness. Small plots were seeded at six dates (July 18, Aug. 3, Aug. 16, Aug. 30, Sept. 7, and Sept. 17) in 2001, with a defoliation treatment occurring during the first week of October. When compared to the winter cereals for winter survival under field conditions, PC rye was tied for second for a mid-July seeding date, and tied for first for early and mid-Aug. seeding dates. PC rye survival was not different (P>0.05) between varieties for late Aug. and Sept. seeding
dates. Results found the optimum time to plant PC rye to ensure maximum winter hardiness was mid-to-late Aug. PC rye was sensitive to late-fall defoliation with the greatest survival reduction occurring for the mid-July seeding date
Magnetocardiography with a modular spin-exchange relaxation free atomic magnetometer array
We present a portable four-channel atomic magnetometer array operating in the
spin exchange relaxation-free regime. The magnetometer array has several design
features intended to maximize its suitability for biomagnetic measurement,
specifically foetal magnetocardiography, such as a compact modular design, and
fibre coupled lasers. The modular design allows the independent positioning and
orientation of each magnetometer, in principle allowing for non-planar array
geometries. Using this array in a magnetically shielded room, we acquire adult
magnetocadiograms. These measurements were taken with a 6-11 fT Hz^(-1/2)
single-channel baseline sensitivity that is consistent with the independently
measured noise level of the magnetically shielded room.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Construction of Infrared Finite Observables in N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory
In this paper we give all the details of the calculation that we presented in
our previous paper ArXiv:0908.0387 where the infrared structure of the MHV
gluon amplitudes in the planar limit for super Yang-Mills theory
was considered in the next-to-leading order of perturbation theory. Explicit
cancellation of the infrared divergencies in properly defined inclusive
cross-sections is demonstrated first in a toy model example of "conformal QED"
and then in the real SYM theory. We give the full-length details
both for the calculation of the real emission and for the diagrams with
splitting in initial and final states. The finite parts for some inclusive
differential cross-sections are presented in an analytical form. In general,
contrary to the virtual corrections, they do not reveal any simple structure.
An example of the finite part containing just the log functions is presented.
The dependence of inclusive cross-section on the external scale related to the
definition of asymptotic states is discussed.Comment: 49 pages, LATEX, 6 eps figures; Minor changes, Refs adde
On demand treatment and home therapy of hereditary angioedema in Germany - the Frankfurt experience
Background: Manifestation of acute edema in hereditary angioedema (HAE) is characterized by interindividual and intraindividual variability in symptom expression over time. Flexible therapy options are needed. Methods: We describe and report on the outcomes of the highly individualized approach to HAE therapy practiced at our HAE center in Frankfurt (Germany). Results: The HAE center at the Frankfurt University Hospital currently treats 450 adults with HAE or AAE and 107 pediatric HAE patients with highly individualized therapeutic approaches. 73.9% of the adult patients treat HAE attacks by on-demand therapy with pasteurized pd C1-INH concentrate, 9.8% use additional prophylaxis with attenuated androgens, 1% of the total patient population in Frankfurt has been treated with Icatibant up to now. In addition adult and selected pediatric patients with a high frequency of severe attacks are instructed to apply individual replacement therapy (IRT) with pasteurized pd C1-INH concentrate. Improvement on Quality of Life items was shown for these patients compared to previous long-term danazol prophylaxis. Home treatment of HAE patients was developed in the Frankfurt HAE center in line with experiences in hemophilia therapy and has so far been implemented over a period of 28 years. At present 248 (55%) of the adult patients and 26 (24%) of the pediatric patients are practicing home treatment either as on demand or IRT treatment. Conclusions: In conclusion, the individualized home therapies provided by our HAE center, aim to limit the disruption to normal daily activities that occurs for many HAE patients. Furthermore, we seek to optimize the economic burden of the disease while offering a maximum quality of life to our patients
Storage of correlated patterns in a perceptron
We calculate the storage capacity of a perceptron for correlated gaussian
patterns. We find that the storage capacity can be less than 2 if
similar patterns are mapped onto different outputs and vice versa. As long as
the patterns are in general position we obtain, in contrast to previous works,
that in agreement with Cover's theorem. Numerical simulations
confirm the results.Comment: 9 pages LaTeX ioplppt style, figures included using eps
