The mechanical properties of pipelines particularly those in marine environments are influenced by corrosion activity of seawater throughout their service lives. The degree to which these properties are influenced in seawater compared to those exposed to air needs to be better understood. In this study, the chemical composition of API X70 pipeline steel plate, microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints of same steel plates exposed to ambient air and seawater respectively were investigated. It was found that the base metal consisted of manganese (0.51wt% Mn), low carbon content (0.051 wt% C) and small quantities of alloying elements such as vanadium (0.021wt% V), molybdenum (0.118 wt% Mo), chromium (0.240 wt% Cr), copper (0.002 wt% Cu), and a carbon equivalent (CE IIW) of 0.38. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) showed that the microstructure of base metal sample has large grains formed in packets which have certain crystallographic orientation but contain submicron grains arranged in a chaotic interlocking manner. The tensile tests performed using a UNITED type universal testing machine confirmed that the yield strength of the base metal was 573.045MPa which conforms to API standard for X70 steel pipe. The manual metal arc (MMA) welding technique was applied to produce the welded joints.  For the welded joints exposed to ambient air at room temperature, the yield strength was 680.624MPa while the compressive strength was 1500.2MPa, and the impact energy at -10°C was 112.68J. Air tests referred to tests conducted in the laboratory at room temperature. For the welded joints exposed to seawater for 12 weeks, the yield strength was 609.154MPa while the compressive strength was 1219.34MPa, and the impact energy at -10°C was 61.48J. The above results for air and seawater exposures were used to determine the environmental reduction factors of the two environments.  Hardness tests conducted using Vickers hardness tester revealed variations in hardness across the base metal, the HAZ and the weld, with the weld having the highest average Vicker’s hardness value (223.8HV) followed by the base metal (217.3HV) and the HAZ had the least (214.5HV

The several past seismic occurrences in Nigeria has recently led to warnings from research agencies and the forecast of large earthquake from researchers in Nigeria. Nevertheless, the major forecast from researchers has appeared to be open ended. To this end, this paper aimed at the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis of Nigeria and the limit to probable future earthquake magnitudes in Nigeria. The Gutenberg-Richter recurrence law was majorly employed for the purpose of this research. The Findings of this research established that Nigeria is at the risk of experiencing earthquake magnitudes as high 6.0 in the year 2020; 6.5 between the year 2021 and 2022; 7.0 between the year 2025 and 2026 and 7.1 in the year 2028 with a 36.79% probability. The probability that an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 will be experienced from 2019 to 2028 also ranges from 9% to 36.79%. The findings of this work inform on the sizes of probable future earthquake magnitude and it is recommended that the government of Nigeria pays rapt attention to earthquakes in Nigeria

ABSTRACT Adoption of any management strategy needs a framework as a blue print for its implementation and usually driven by the management. Therefore, this paper is aimed at presenting the role of top management commitment on implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM). This management philosophy is mainly concerned with continuous improvement in an organization, from high level strategic planning and decision-making to detailed execution of work elements on every level of the organization. An investigatory survey research approach (ISRA) method was adopted for the quantitative and qualitative data collection and collation from Shirror Hydroelectric Power Plant PLC. of Nigeria. It was ascertained that top/middle management commitment is a fundamental factor to be considered by an organization to implementation TQM

Cerebral Changes Occurring in Arginase and Dimethylarginine Dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) in a Rat Model of Sleeping Sickness

Involvement of nitric oxide (NO) in the pathophysiology of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) was analyzed in a HAT animal model (rat infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei). With this model, it was previously reported that trypanosomes were capable of limiting trypanocidal properties carried by NO by decreasing its blood concentration. It was also observed that brain NO concentration, contrary to blood, increases throughout the infection process. The present approach analyses the brain impairments occurring in the regulations exerted by arginase and N(G), N(G)-dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) on NO Synthases (NOS). In this respect: (i) cerebral enzymatic activities, mRNA and protein expression of arginase and DDAH were determined; (ii) immunohistochemical distribution and morphometric parameters of cells expressing DDAH-1 and DDAH-2 isoforms were examined within the diencephalon; (iii) amino acid profiles relating to NOS/arginase/DDAH pathways were established.Arginase and DDAH activities together with mRNA (RT-PCR) and protein (western-blot) expressions were determined in diencephalic brain structures of healthy or infected rats at various days post-infection (D5, D10, D16, D22). While arginase activity remained constant, that of DDAH increased at D10 (+65%) and D16 (+51%) in agreement with western-blot and amino acids data (liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry). Only DDAH-2 isoform appeared to be up-regulated at the transcriptional level throughout the infection process. Immunohistochemical staining further revealed that DDAH-1 and DDAH-2 are contained within interneurons and neurons, respectively. In the brain of infected animals, the lack of change observed in arginase activity indicates that polyamine production is not enhanced. Increases in DDAH-2 isoform may contribute to the overproduction of NO. These changes are at variance with those reported in the periphery. As a whole, the above processes may ensure additive protection against trypanosome entry into the brain, i.e., maintenance of NO trypanocidal pressure and limitation of polyamine production, necessary for trypanosome growth

Big issues for small feet : developmental, biomechanical and clinical narratives on children's footwear

    Get PDF
The effects of footwear on the development of children's feet has been debated for many years and recent work from the developmental and biomechanical literature has challenged long-held views about footwear and the impact on foot development. This narrative review draws upon existing studies from developmental, biomechanical and clinical literature to explore the effects of footwear on the development of the foot. The emerging findings from this support the need for progress in [children's] footwear science and advance understanding of the interaction between the foot and shoe. Ensuring clear and credible messages inform practice requires a progressive evidence base but this remains big issue in children's footwear research

    Fuzzy Bigroup from another Viewpoint

    No full text
In group theory, given two groups G and H, it is possible to construct a new group from the Cartesian product of G and H, G × H. With this as a motivation, we replicate this concept in fuzzy group algebra. In this paper, we take a slight deviation from the familiar definition of fuzzy bigroup by looking at fuzzy bigroup from the idea of Cartesian product of groups. We define Cartesian fuzzy function on groups and give examples. We also define Cartesian fuzzy bigroup and study some of its basic properties. Keywords: Bigroups, Cartesian fuzzy function, Fuzzy bigroups

This study investigates a three-dimensional elliptical microchannel heat sink for heat dissipation in laminar forced convection. The study seeks to improve thermal performance and overcome overheating associated with excessive temperature commonly experienced in heat-generating equipment, which is beyond the temperature usually specified by the manufacturer. The objective of the study is to evaluate the heat transfer, fluid flow, and entropy generation characteristics of Al2O3-water nanofluid in an elliptical cooling channel. The numerical analysis is investigated on the structure experiencing constant volumetric heat generation. The parameters considered are Reynolds number of 100 ≤ Re ≤ 500, nanoparticle concentration ϕ, from 0% to 4% with channel aspect ratio Ar from 1 to 3. The impacts of these parameters on the maximum temperature, heat transfer coefficient, friction factor, and volumetric entropy generation are reported. The study demonstrates that heat transfer is enhanced in the elliptical cooling channel at different aspect ratios, nanoparticle concentrations, and Reynold numbers. The results showed that as the nanoparticle concentration, channel aspect ratio, and Reynolds number (Re) increase, the maximum temperature, and total entropy generation decrease. As the channel aspect ratio increases at a specified Re = 200 and nanofluid concentration, ɸ = 3%, the maximum temperature, and total entropy generation decrease by up to 62% while the heat transfer coefficient increases by up to 78% and the friction factor increase by less than 2% with aspect ratio. However, the friction factor is not sensitive to the nanofluid concentration as a coolant
