Kiswahili Research in Cognitive and Cultural Linguistics

    Get PDF
Cognitive linguistics studies have been developing since 1980s and represent one of the major frameworks of linguistic research. This article provides an overview of the limited number of studies on Kiswahili which have been conducted using this theoretical model, while outlining the advantages of this approach in various areas of research and multiple topics. It is also demonstrated that cognitive Linguistics approach has benefits for teaching Kiswahili as a foreign language

Nationalism, Soft Annexation and Hybrid Warfare: Putin\u27s Recipe for Russian Resurgence

Over the last decades since the fall of the Soviet Union, The Russian Federation has struggled to reclaim its grasp over Eastern Europe and re-establish itself as a major player on the international scene. Increased NATO expansion towards its borders, and the “Westernization” of Eastern Europe has led to the country feeling it has been boxed into a corner. The feeling that the Russian nation has been encroached upon by the Western world has led to the rise of Vladimir Putin as President of Russia, and the marked rise in nationalism within the country. In this Master’s Thesis, I intend to discuss the history of Russian nationalism prior to and during Vladimir Putin’s reign as President of the Russian Federation, and how this nationalism has been harnessed to achieve both his domestic and international political goals; These goals namely being the unification of the Russian people in support of the Kremlin, their alienation from the rest of the world through the fostering of pre-existing xenophobic rhetoric and the implementation of nationalist driven soft annexation and hybrid warfare tactics meant to destabilize Eastern Europe and limit Western encroachment. All of this, I argue, is done to re-create a geopolitical buffer zone against Western incursion both in a physical and ideological sense- physically by destabilizing South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as well as annexing Crimea from Ukraine and fostering separatist warfare in the Donbas region, and ideologically by painting the West as an oppressor determined to re-create the East in its own visage. I will also discuss the effect Russia’s actions on the international stage have had on surrounding Eastern European countries and the threats they face from Russia today

An Evolution Process For Service-Oriented Systems

    Get PDF
Evolution of service-oriented systems is quite a new research area, which becomesmore and more important as engineering challenges move from enablingservice-orientation onto the maintenance and evolution of already developedservice-oriented systems. However, the development of suitable evolution processesand methodologies is still an open research problem. The evolution processpresented in this paper has been designed to address the evolution of serviceorientedsystems, which are technically built out of a set of service compositions. The presented process comprises phases and tasks compliant with ISO 20000.The underlying model of service-oriented system consisting of business processesand corresponding service composition models has also been presented. A traceabilitymodel and tools supporting change impact analysis have also beenprovisioned for. Preliminary industrial validation indicates that the evolutionprocess should be easy to adapt by the industry

A multifluid model with chemically reacting components -- construction of weak solutions

We investigate the existence of weak solutions to the multi-component system, consisting of compressible chemically reacting components, coupled with the compressible Stokes equation for the velocity. Specifically, we consider the case of the irreversible chemical reaction and assume the nonlinear relation between the pressure and the particular densities. These assumptions cause additional difficulties in the mathematical analysis, due to the possible presence of vacuum. It is shown that there exists a global weak solution, satisfying the LL^\infty bounds for all the components. Moreover, despite the lack of regularity on the gradients, we obtain strong compactness of densities in LpL^p spaces. The applied method captures the properties of the models of high generality, which admit an arbitrary number of components. Furthermore, the framework we develop can handle models that contain both diffusing and non-diffusing elements

Direct sums and the Szlenk index

For α\alpha an ordinal and 1<p<1<p<\infty, we determine a necessary and sufficient condition for an p\ell_p-direct sum of operators to have Szlenk index not exceeding ωα\omega^\alpha. It follows from our results that the Szlenk index of an p\ell_p-direct sum of operators is determined in a natural way by the behaviour of the ϵ\epsilon-Szlenk indices of its summands. Our methods give similar results for c0c_0-direct sums.Comment: The proof of Proposition~2.4 has changed, with some of the arguments transferred to the proof of an added-in lemma, Lemma~2.8. Changes have been made to the Applications sectio

    Genericity of Fr\'echet smooth spaces

If a separable Banach space contains an isometric copy of every separable reflexive Fr\'echet smooth Banach space, then it contains an isometric copy of every separable Banach space. The same conclusion holds if we consider separable Banach spaces with Fr\'echet smooth dual space. This improves a result of G. Godefroy and N. J. Kalton.Comment: 34 page

Modelling architectural decisions under changing requirements

    Get PDF
Abstract-One of the approaches for documenting software architecture is to treat it as a set of architectural design decisions. Such decisions are always made in the context of requirements that must be fulfilled and in the context of decisions that were made before. Currently, models for representing architectural decisions are mainly concentrated on showing the decision making process of the initial architectural design. However, decisions that have been made in such a process may need to be changed during further evolution and maintenance of the software architecture, typically in response to the new or changed requirements. A graphical modelling notation for documenting architectural decisions (Maps of Architectural Decisions) has been developed by our team. In this paper, it is presented how this notation could be used to model architectural decisions under changing requirements. It is proposed how one decision change could be effectively propagated through the rest of the architectural decision model and how a rigorous and toolsupported process of updating such models could be organized
