An objective method to associate local weather extremes with characteristic circulation structures

    Get PDF
In this paper we give methods to find characteristic circulation patterns which are connected to local extreme temperature anomalies. Two data reduction techniques are applied: Legendre polynomial fitting and watershedding. For polynomial fitting a clear trend is found with respect to local temperatures. However, the trend is not distinctive enough to give clear answers on the type of circulation patterns belonging to local extremes. The main advantage of watershedding is that the physical properties of the circulation patterns are retained while the dimension of the data is largely reduced. Expert knowledge, however, is needed to model these main features as predictors

The reaction of the WIG stock market index to changes in the interest rates on bank deposits

Determination of the relationship between the money market and capital market is particularly important from the point of view of taking a decision on the location of investment capital. It may help to forecast future states. This study seeks to determine the relationship of the interest rate on deposits in zloty with the WIG stock index and the volume of turnover on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Analysis of correlation and VAR models are used. Analysis of long-term correlation indicates a negative relationship between the interest rate on deposits in banks and the value of the WIG stock-index. However, this may be spurious. The dependence between these variables may be more complex and should rather be seen as short term. It seems that in general the impact of an increase in interest rates on the value of the WIG index is negative in the short term, just as in the long term. In addition, in the short term these variables can move in the same direction. The results obtained in the research are consistent with results obtained for other national markets. This applies in particular to the relatively weak, negative correlation described above.interest rate on deposits, WIG index, correlation, causality

Functional metagenomic analysis of carbohydrate degrading enzymes from the human gut microbiota

Abstract The gut microbiota is a complex and diverse microbial community that is adapted to a carbohydrate-rich ecosystem. Plant cell wall components (cellulose, hemicelluloses and pectins), resistant starch and various oligosaccharides reach the colon by escaping digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Fermentation of these dietary carbohydrates by the gut microbiota has well-recognised beneficial effects on host health. The microbial community in the human gut requires specific enzymes to efficiently degrade these carbohydrates. In this project, a culture-independent approach based on functional screening of genomic and metagenomic libraries using Escherichia coli and Lactococcus lactis as heterologous expression hosts, was used to isolate novel genes encoding glycoside hydrolase (GH) enzymes. The study identified several active GH enzymes involved in the breakdown of dietary polysaccharides such as starch, cellulose, xylan and β-glucan, recovered from the E. coli metagenomic library. The bioinformatic analysis of the insert from positive clones showed the presence of ORFs with the similarity to enzymes from GH families 13, 43 and 51 encoded by dominant bacterial genera from the human colon (Bacteroides sp., Roseburia sp., Ruminococcus sp.). A group of clones encoding potentially novel GH enzymes was also identified, emphasising the importance of functional-based study. One highly active clone was detected during screening of the L. lactis metagenomic library and showed fibrolytic activity on cellulose-, lichenanand xylan-containing plates. The insert contained a partial gene with the GH9 catalytic domain and identity to the protein from Coprococcus eutactus ART55/1. Further functional analysis established the fibrolytic activity of selected Coprococcus species. Moreover, several active clones were isolated from the Ruminococcus sp. 80/3 genomic library which encoded protein with the similarity to enzymes from GH families 2, 3 and 5. In this work, the traditional approach of expression in E. coli was complemented by using an alternative host – L. lactis. While this did not improve the screening efficiency in terms of number of recovered clones, differences in gene expression and protein export between E. coli and L. lactis were noted during this study which highlights the benefits of using different heterologous hosts in functional metagenomic approaches

Foundations of GAM Research. Methodological Guidelines for Designing and Conducting Research that Combines Games and Agent-based Models

    Get PDF
This thesis presents the development of the games and agent-based model methodology and provides methodological guidelines for using GAM research, i.e., combining games and agent-based models in research. GAM research is rooted in complexity sciences and transdisciplinary research, offering valuable insights into complex, adaptable systems. GAM research has particular relevance in decision-making and complex-system management, thus fostering collaboration among scientists and non-academics from various disciplines. It is an engaging platform for data collection and stakeholder processes, thus enriching causal explanations. It should be noted that GAM research has the potential to overcome the limitations of traditional methods by facilitating hypothesis testing with simulation-based observations of human behaviours. Investigations in GAM research can change how social science addresses pressing global challenges. The immersive nature of games combined with agent-based models offers an innovative approach that attracts diverse participants, making it a promising tool for science that reaches beyond the classic academic spheres. As a comprehensive handbook, this thesis offers researchers inspiration and references for conducting GAM research across diverse application domains. This thesis presents an assessment of the state of research that combines games and agent-based models and proposes a structured approach to making progress in this field. Addressing the lack of a standardised methodology, this thesis is aimed at improving research practices, transparency, and replicability . Practical advice is provided for guiding researchers through designing and conducting GAM research, thus promoting rigorous and comprehensive studies

This paper examines the determinants of CEO compensation. There are many factors that influence CEO compensation. For this research three factors has been selected: companies size, accounting factor and market factor. The study looks at the relationship between each of this factors and directors remuneration. Sample of companies listed on London Stock Exchange (LSE) and Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) has been investigated over the period of 2007 – 2010. Data has been collected through annual reports content analysis and announcement on websites of LSE and WSE. Linear regression has been run on collected data. Positive correlation has been found between directors’ remuneration and companies size in both British and Polish listed companies. The relationship is also positive between directors pay and companies performance. Companies’ performance has been assets by return on equity ratio (ROE) and Tobin’s Q. All the findings are consistent with the outcome presented within previous research by variety of scholars

How does cultural intelligence influence the relationships between potential and realised absorptive capacity and innovativeness? Evidence from Poland

    Get PDF
Cultural intelligence underpins the interaction between firms and their cultural environments as the domain of external sources that are explored and utilised for innovation through absorptive capacity. This research seeks to answer the question of if and how cultural intelligence moderates the links between innovativeness and potential and realised absorptive capacity. We test our hypotheses based on data from 215 firms operating in Poland. We demonstrate that cultural intelligence strengthens the linkage between potential absorptive capacity and innovativeness that highlights cultural intelligence as an important enabler of exploring new and diverse external knowledge sources. We discuss cultural intelligence concept in relation to strategic management and reveal its contingent role in innovativeness
