    Salivary gland cancer — epidemiology

    Get PDF
Salivary gland tumors represent 3–11% of all head and neck cancers and 0.2% of all neoplasms. Among Poles, malignancies involving the large salivary glands constituted 0.3% of all malignancies in Poland and 9.7% of head and neck neoplasms. In 2014, the morbidity rate was higher among women, but over the past 15 years there has been a slight prevalence among men. As for benign neoplasms in Poland, the most commonly seen are pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin’s tumor. Cystic glandular cancer, mucoid epidermal carcinoma and adenocarcinoma are among the most frequent malignancies. Less common are lymphoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Salivary gland neoplasms are usually located in the parotid gland, then in the sub-mandibular gland. The best prognosis is for women whose cancers are located in the parotid gland and those with lobular carcinoma. Figures have been on the rise lately, however. Deaths have been on a stable level

The objective of this study was to evaluate carcass and meat quality in growing-finishing pigs fed diets with different vegetable protein sources. It was found that partial (50% in grower diets) and complete (100% in finisher diets) replacement of protein from genetically modified soybean meal (GM-SBM) with protein from 00-rapeseed meal (00-RSM), alone or in combination with protein from faba bean seeds (FB) cv. ‘Albus’, yellow lupine seeds (YL) cv. ‘Taper’ or corn DDGS, had no significant effect on carcass quality characteristics or the chemical composition of meat. In all groups, meat samples were characterized by color typical of pork, high water-holding capacity and low pH values. A sensory analysis of the eating quality attributes of meat revealed that they were highly satisfactory; only aroma intensity was affected by the experimental factor. The study demonstrated that growing-finishing pigs can be fed complete diets containing the analyzed vegetable protein sources alternative to GM-SBM without compromising carcass or meat quality

The retrospective analysis of recurrent salivary gland cancer after surgery and adjuvant radio- or chemoradiotherapy

Introduction. The aim of the study was to analyse the survival and progression rates in patients with recurrent salivary gland cancer after surgery and adjuvant radio- or chemoradiotherapy. Material and methods. The study included 43 patients treated in 2006–2016 and evaluated in terms of PFS and OS. Results. The 6-, 12- and 24-month OS rates were: 51%, 41%, and 14%, respectively, while the 6-, 12- and 24-month PFS rates were: 44%, 27%, and 14%, respectively. Any treatment improves OS and PFS, with surgery having the greatest effect on improving PFS, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A multivariate analysis has shown that predictors of PFS are: irradiated volume and radiation technique, while irradiated volume is the predictor of OS. Conclusions. Prognosis in patients with recurrent gland cancer is poor and does not depend on the type of relapse, but rather on further management

Disruptive innovations affect the development of cities – they challenge the status quo of theapplied technologies to date, but also force citizens to adjust to the new reality. This article makes a reviewof the literature on the impact of disruptive innovations on the socio-cultural development of cities. In thiscase, Google Maps, housing cooperatives and InPost were discussed as examples of disruptive innovations.Based on the available materials, the impact on the socio-cultural dimensions of urban development wasdetermined. It included social ties, social capital, aging society, forms of residence, migrations, cultural heritage, local patriotism and urban policy. Finally, the consequences of the presence of disruptive innovationsin cities were indicated, including the impact on planning, anticipating dangerous social phenomena, as wellas using the innovation potential in addressing urban challenges.
