Effect of adherent Lactobacillus spp. on in vitro adherence of salmonellae to the intestinal epithelial cells of chicken

Single strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lact. fermentum, isolated from chicken intestine, were used to study in vitro interactions with Salmonella enteritidis, Salm. pullorum or Salm. typhimurium in an ileal epithelial cell (IEC) radioactive assay. Exclusion, competition and displacement phenomena were investigated by respectively incubating (a) lactobacilli and IEC together, prior to addition of salmonellae, (b) lactobacilli, IEC and salmonellae together, and (c) salmonellae and IEC, followed by the lactobacilli. Lactobacilli were selected for study because of their strong ability to adhere to IEC and poor aggregation with salmonellae. The results demonstrated that Lact. acidophilus significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the attachment of Salm. pullorum to IEC in the tests for exclusion and competition, but not in the displacement tests. Lactobacillus fermentum was found to have some ability to reduce the attachment of Salm. typhimurium to IEC under the conditions of exclusion (P < 0.08), competition (P < 0.09), but not displacement. However, both Lact. acidophilus and Lact. fermentum were unable to reduce the adherence of Salm. enteritidis to IEC under any of the conditions

Development of modified double-weight code and its implementation in multi-rate transmissions

    Get PDF
This paper presents a new code structure and its ability in supporting multiple transmission rates in point to point Spectral Amplitude Coding- Optical Code Division Multiple Access (SAC-OCDMA) links. The Double-Weight (DW) code family that has a basic fixed weight of 2 was proposed. Modified Double Weight (MDW) Code is a DW code family variation that has variable weight of greater than two. The ability of MDW codes to support simultaneous transmissions at different bit rates is shown through simulated results of the bit error rate (BER) and the eye patterns. Four MDW encoded channels were used at the bit rates of 2.5Gbps and 10Gbps. MDW code shown here significantly performs better than Hadamard and Modified Frequency Hopping (MFH) codes

MPEG-4 video transmission using distributed TDMA MAC protocol over IEEE 802.15.4 wireless technology

The issues of green technology nowadays give an inspiration to the researcher to make all the future design to be energy efficient. Medium Access Control (MAC) layer is the most effective layer to provide energy efficient due to its ability to control the physical radio directly. One of the important applications in the future is a video transmission that can be transmitted with low-cost and low power consumption. MPEG-4 is one of the international standards for moving video. MPEG-4 provide better compression and primarily design at low bit rate communication. In order to achieve good quality for video application, the design at MAC layer must be strong. Therefore, to increase the performance of the MPEG-4 in IEEE 802.15.4, in this paper we propose a cross layer design between MAC layer and Application layer. A priority queue will be implemented at MAC scheduling depends on the level of frame important in MPEG-4 format frame. A distributed Time division Multiple Access (TDMA) will be used for MAC protocol to provide reliable data transmission for high priority frame

Hybrid WDM/OCDMA system to support differentiated services in access network

    Get PDF
This paper presents a new scheme of WDM/OCDMA system that capable of providing differentiated services in access network. We implement the proposed double-weight (DW) code in this system. The double-weight (DW) code has a fixed weight of 2 and exists for every natural number, n. In spectral-amplitude-coding optical code division multiple access (CDMA) systems, DW code has an ideal cross correlation to eliminate multiuser interference and suppress the noise. We analyze the performance of the system by evaluating the bit error rate (BER) of different services

Yield of esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy in cancer of unknown primary

    Get PDF
Objectives: Carcinoma of unknown primary origin (CUP) is heterogeneous group of cancers. Role of gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy in this entity is under investigated. Aim of this study was to evaluate yield of Colonoscopy and Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) in localizing primary tumor in patients with CUP. METHODOLOGY: Patients with histopathologically proven CUP who underwent colonoscopy / EGD to find the primary tumor from December 2009 to December 2011 were included in the study. Abdominal symptoms and cytokeratin (CK) 7 and 20 markers were correlated with presence of primary in GI tract. Results: After giving informed consent 86 patients were included in final analysis. All patients underwent colonoscopy while 60(70%) got EGD along with colonoscopy. Mean age was 55.10 +/-11.94 years with 52(60%) male. Abdominal symptoms were present in 50%. CK7+/CK20- in 34(40%); CK7-/CK20+ in 2(2%) while CK7+/20+ in 7(8%) of metastatic tumor samples. Liver was metastatic site in 47(55%), Lymph node 12(14%) and Ascites in 8(9%). Endoscopy detected primary in 6 (7%) patients with 3 each in stomach and colon. No association of abdominal symptoms and cytokeratin markers was found with presence of GI primary site. CONCLUSION: Yield of localizing primary lesion in the GI tract by pan-endoscopy was limited. Abdominal symptoms and cytokeratin markers do not predict presence of gastrointestinal malignancies

A preliminary study on operation management for one-way EV car sharing system in university campus

    Get PDF
Car sharing using electric vehicles(EVs) is effective in local society and community from the viewpoint of economy and the protection of the natural environment. For instance, Univerisiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), which has two large campuses, has a plan to use a small number of small EVs as one of transportation methods. When a large number of people share a small number of vehicles in this way, the confliction of usage requests by users may cause inconvenience to users and ineffective operation of vehicles. In addition, because the degree of legal compliance with usage time and operation rules relies on social and cultural backgrounds, operation methods may be affected by them. Therefore, a framework for supporting operation management in consideration of characteristics of the local society and community is necessary in order to efficiently operate a limited number of vehicles without detracting from the convenience of users. We have been developing an operation management support system for one-way EV car sharing in the university campus to improve user convenience and vehicle operation efficiency. In this presentation, we clarify the issues of operation management for car sharing system. We also introduce an overview of the operation management support system and propose several reservation methods of vehicles
