    The Anatomical Numerical Measurement of Posterior Cruciate Ligament: A Vietnamese Cadaveric Study

    BACKGROUND: The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is crucial to restrain the posterior translation of the tibia. Its anatomical structure is complex. A proper understanding of PCL anatomy may assist surgeon in reconstructing anatomically native PCL. AIM: To describe the anatomical numerical measurement of the PCL in Vietnamese adults. METHODS: Twenty-one fresh cadaveric knees were examined. The macroscopic details of the intra-articular PCL, the attachment of the anterolateral bundle (ALB), posteromedial bundles (PMB) to the femur and tibia were analysed. We used a digital camera to photograph the cadaveric specimens and used the ImageJ software to analyse the collected images. RESULTS: The ALB and PMB length were 35.5 ± 2.78 and 32.6 ± 2.28 mm, respectively. The smallest and the biggest diameter of middle third of the PCL were 5.9 ± 0.71 and 10.0 ± 1.39 mm, respectively. The area of cross section of middle third of the PCL was 53.6 ± 12.37 mm2. The femoral insertion area of ALB and PMB were 88.4 ± 16.89 and 43.5 ± 8.83 mm2, respectively. The distance from the central point of femoral ALB, PMB, and total PCL insertion to the Blumensaat line were 5.5 ± 0.91, 11.5 ± 1.98, and 7.6 ± 1.42 mm, respectively. The shortest distance from medial femoral cartilage rim to the central point of femoral ALB, PMB, and total PCL insertion were 7.0 ± 0.79, 7.3 ± 0.95, and 7.8 ± 1.73 mm, respectively. The tibial insertion area of ALB and PMB were 84.5 ± 12.52 and 47.8 ± 6.20 mm2 respectively. The shortest distance from the posterior cartilage corner of the medial tibial plateau to the central point of ALB, PMB, and total PCL insertion to tibia were 8.5 ± 1.02, 9.4 ± 1.11, and 8.3 ± 1.1 mm, respectively. The central point of tibial PCL insertion was 9.7±1.08 mm below cartilage plane of the medial tibial plateau.     Antibiotic resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Vietnamese children with severe pneumonia: a cross-sectional study

    BackgroundStreptococcus pneumoniae is the most common bacterium that causes community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children. The rate of S. pneumoniae resistance to antibiotics is increasing, particularly in patients with severe CAP. Therefore, the level of antibiotic resistance of S. pneumoniae causing severe CAP in Vietnamese children requires regular monitoring.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Nasopharyngeal aspiration specimens from children were cultured, isolated, and examined for S. pneumoniae. Bacterial strains were assessed for antimicrobial susceptibility, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined.ResultsEighty-nine strains of S. pneumoniae were isolated from 239 children with severe CAP. The majority of isolates were completely non-susceptible to penicillin (1.1% intermediate, 98.9% resistant) and highly resistant to erythromycin (96.6%) and clarithromycin (88.8%); the rate of resistance to ceftriaxone was 16.9%, with the proportion of intermediate resistance at 46.0%; 100% of strains were susceptible to vancomycin and linezolid. For most antibiotics, MIC50 and MIC90 were equal to the resistance threshold according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute 2021; penicillin had an eight-fold increase in MIC90 (64 mg/L) and ceftriaxone had a 1.5-fold increase in MIC90 (6 mg/L).ConclusionStreptococcus pneumoniae isolates described in this study were resistant to many antibiotics. Penicillin should not be the first-line antibiotic of choice, and ceftriaxone at an enhanced dose should be used instead

    In this paper, the compositions and contents of fatty acids in the total lipid extracts of 69 red seaweed samples belonging to 9 families (Gracilariaceae, Hypneaceae, Ceramiaceae, Bangiaceae, Hylamaniaceae, Bonnemaisoniaceae, Phyllophoraceae, Rhodymeniaceae and Halymeniaceae) are studied. According to the results, 56 fatty acids are identified, in which 12 fatty acids were considered “fatty acid markers” for the botanical classification (Chemotaxonomy) of red seaweed species such as C14:0, C15:0, C16:0, C16:1n-7, C18:0, C18:1n-9, C18:1n-7, C18:2n-6, C20:3n-6, C20:4n-6, C20:5n-3 and C22:0. By using principal component analysis method (PCA), the analysis result on two-dimensional chart showed that families of red seaweed are distributed into separate regions. Classification tree diagram of the red seaweed species based on essential fatty acid composition is also given.Chúng tôi đã tiến hành nghiên cứu thành phần và hàm lượng các axit béo trong dịch chiết lipit tổng của 69 mẫu rong đỏ Rhodophyta thuộc 9 họ Gracilariaceae, Hypneaceae, Ceramiaceae, Bangiaceae, Hylamaniaceae, Phyllophoraceae, Rhodymeniaceae, họ Halymeniaceae. Kết quả đã xác định được 56 axit béo trong đó có 12 axit béo là C14:0, C15:0, C16:0, C16:1n-7, C18:0, C18:1n-9, C18:1n-7, C18:2n-6, C20:3n-6, C20:4n-6, C20:5n-3 và C22:0 được sử dụng là những chất đánh dấu cho việc phân loại hoá học thực vật (Chemotaxonomy) đối với các loài rong đỏ.     Synthesized BiVO4 was by the co-precipitation method for Rhodamine B degradation under visible light

    Recently, BiVO4 photocatalysts has been received much attention in field of catalysts. Because it can be used to degrade harmful organic catalysts in visible light, irradiation produces CO2, H2O and less harmful organic matter. In this study, we have successfully synthesized a BiVO4 photocatalysts via co-precipitation method in the presence of urea and different calcined temperatures. The survey calcined temperatures as 300°C; 350°C; 400°C and 450°C. The obtained materials were characterized by Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible compact Philip lamp (40W) light irradiation. The result indicates that all samples calcined are monoclinic scheelite structure of BiVO4. The BiVO4-350°C sample performed the best in the photodegradation of RhB

    A facile synthesis and properties of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photocatalyst by hydrothermal method

    In this study, BiVO4 photocatalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal method using Bi(NO3)3 5H2O and NH4VO3 as raw materials followed by calcination at different temperatures in the range from 350 °C to 600 °C. The as-synthesized BiVO4 samples were characterized by a number of physicochemical techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and UV-Visible (UV-Vis) light diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry.     De novo copy number variations in candidate genomic regions in patients of severe autism spectrum disorder in Vietnam

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder with a prevalence of around 1% children worldwide and characterized by patient behaviour (communication, social interaction, and personal development). Data on the efficacy of diagnostic tests using copy number variations (CNVs) in candidate genes in ASD is currently around 10% but it is overrepresented by patients of Caucasian background. We report here that the diagnostic success of de novo candidate CNVs in Vietnamese ASD patients is around 6%. We recruited one hundred trios (both parents and a child) where the child was clinically diagnosed with ASD while the parents were not affected. We performed genetic screening to exclude RETT syndrome and Fragile X syndrome and performed genome-wide DNA microarray (aCGH) on all probands and their parents to analyse for de novo CNVs. We detected 1708 non-redundant CNVs in 100 patients and 118 (7%) of them were de novo. Using the filter for known CNVs from the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI) database, we identified six CNVs (one gain and five loss CNVs) in six patients (3 males and 3 females). Notably, 3 of our patients had a deletion involving the SHANK3 gene–which is the highest compared to previous reports. This is the first report of candidate CNVs in ASD patients from Vietnam and provides the framework for building a CNV based test as the first tier screening for clinical management

    Lutraria rhynchaena Jonas, 1844 is of great commercial interest, but its reserves have dramatically declined over recent decades. Therefore, there is an urgent need of scientific basis to propose effective fishery management measures and improve artificial aquaculture of the clam. In this study, we investigated the distribution and density of L. rhynchaena, sediment characteristics, and established the clam’s reproductive cycle through monthly observations from August 2017 to July 2018. The study results showed that distribution and density of clams are related to sediment types, and the sediment type of medium sand is likely the best benthic substrate for the clams. The spawning of clams occurred throughout the year with three spawning peaks in January, April and September. For the sustainable management of the clam resource in Cat Ba-Ha Long Bay, the fishery authorities can issue a ban on harvest of the clam in spawning peak months in January, April and September

    Evaluation of thermal stability of an antifungal protein from Bacillus subtilis isolated in Vietnam

    Antifungal proteins were isolated from the crude bacterial supernatant using ammonium sulfate salt precipitation followed by passage over DEAE -cellulose and Biogel P100 columns. The purified protein had an apparent molecular mass of 14 kDa. Its antifungal activity was retained even at 100°C, for 60 min. The results of protein identification using MALDI -TOF/TOF mass spectrometer suggested that the purified protein is indeed a chitin binding protein that has 206 acid amine containing chitin -bind -3 region with a relative molecular mass of 22230 Da.Protein có hoạt tính kháng nấm được tinh sạch từ dịch ngoại bào chủng vi khuẩn Bacillus subtilis sau khi qua ba bước tinh sạch: tủa muối ammonium sulphate 30-70%, qua cột sắc ký trao đổi ion DEAE – cellulose và cột săc ký lọc gel Biogel P100. Protein tinh sạch có khối lượng phân tử đạt 22 kDa trên điện di SDS-PAGE. Hoạt tính kháng nấm của protein tinh sạch vẫn còn duy trì khi ủ ở 100°C trong 60 phút. Kết quả nhận dạng bằng khối phổ MALDI -TOF/TOF đã chỉ ra rằng protein bền nhiệt này là chitin binding protein được mã hóa bởi 206 acid amin cùng với khối lượng phân tử là 22230 Da. trị an toàn đối với Al và Atrazie trong môi trường nước tự nhiên về khía cạnh bảo vệ sức khỏe sinh thái
