    GRB Flares: UV/Optical Flaring (Paper I)

    We present a new algorithm for the detection of flares in gamma-ray burst (GRB) light curves and use this algorithm to detect flares in the UV/optical. The algorithm makes use of the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) to analyze the residuals of the fitted light curve, removing all major features, and to determine the statistically best fit to the data by iteratively adding additional `breaks' to the light curve. These additional breaks represent the individual components of the detected flares: T_start, T_stop, and T_peak. We present the detection of 119 unique flaring periods detected by applying this algorithm to light curves taken from the Second Swift Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) GRB Afterglow Catalog. We analyzed 201 UVOT GRB light curves and found episodes of flaring in 68 of the light curves. For those light curves with flares, we find an average number of ~2 flares per GRB. Flaring is generally restricted to the first 1000 seconds of the afterglow, but can be observed and detected beyond 10^5 seconds. More than 80% of the flares detected are short in duration with Delta t/t of < 0.5. Flares were observed with flux ratios relative to the underlying light curve of between 0.04 to 55.42.     Lattice distortion in hcp rare gas solids

    The lattice distortion parameter δc/a8/3\delta \equiv c/a-\sqrt{8/3} has been calculated as a function of molar volume for the hcp phases of He, Ar, Kr and Xe. Results from both semi-empirical potentials and density functional theory are presented. Our study shows that δ\delta is negative for helium in the entire pressure range. For Ar, Kr and Xe, however, δ\delta changes sign from negative to positive as the pressure increases, growing rapidly in magnitude at higher pressures.Comment: Submitted to Low. Temp.     Effects of deformation on superconducting metals

    An A.C. mutual inductance method was used to measure the effects of deformation on the superconducting critical field curve for tin. The deformation was produced by pushing on the ends of a cylindrical sample which had a length to diameter ratio of unity. It was found that a 2% deformation produced no change in the shape of the critical field curve but only shifted it upward about 1.5 oersteds

    In-situ measurement of the permittivity of helium using microwave NbN resonators

    By measuring the electrical transport properties of superconducting NbN quarter-wave resonators in direct contact with a helium bath, we have demonstrated a high-speed and spatially sensitive sensor for the permittivity of helium. In our implementation a 103\sim10^{-3} mm3^3 sensing volume is measured with a bandwidth of 300 kHz in the temperature range 1.8 to 8.8 K. The minimum detectable change of the permittivity of helium is calculated to be 6×\sim6\times101110^{-11} ϵ0\epsilon_0/Hz1/2^{1/2} with a sensitivity of order 101310^{-13} ϵ0\epsilon_0/Hz1/2^{1/2} easily achievable. Potential applications include operation as a fast, localized helium thermometer and as a transducer in superfluid hydrodynamic experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Rare manifestation of a c.290 C\u3eT, p.Gly97Glu VCP mutation

    Introduction. The valosin-containing protein (VCP) regulates several distinct cellular processes. Consistent with this, VCP mutations manifest variable clinical phenotypes among and within families and are a diagnostic challenge. Methods. A 60-year-old man who played ice hockey into his 50’s was evaluated by electrodiagnostics, muscle biopsy, and molecular genetics. Results. With long-standing pes cavus and toe walking, our patient developed progressive weakness, cramps, memory loss, and paresthesias at age 52. An axonal sensorimotor neuropathy was found upon repeated testing at age 58. Neuropathic histopathology was present in the quadriceps, and exome sequencing revealed the VCP mutation c.290 C>T, p.Gly97Glu. Conclusions. Our patient reflects the clinical heterogeneity of VCP mutations, as his neurological localization is a spectrum between a lower motor neuron disorder and a hereditary axonal peripheral neuropathy such as CMT2. Our case demonstrates a rare manifestation of the c.290 C>T, pGly97Glu VCP mutation

    Electronics and data acquisition demonstrator for a kinetic inductance camera

    A prototype of digital frequency multiplexing electronics allowing the real time monitoring of kinetic inductance detector (KIDs) arrays for mm-wave astronomy has been developed. It requires only 2 coaxial cables for instrumenting a large array. For that, an excitation comb of frequencies is generated and fed through the detector. The direct frequency synthesis and the data acquisition relies heavily on a large FPGA using parallelized and pipelined processing. The prototype can instrument 128 resonators (pixels) over a bandwidth of 125 MHz. This paper describes the technical solution chosen, the algorithm used and the results obtained
