On the Unicity of Smartphone Applications
Prior works have shown that the list of apps installed by a user reveal a lot
about user interests and behavior. These works rely on the semantics of the
installed apps and show that various user traits could be learnt automatically
using off-the-shelf machine-learning techniques. In this work, we focus on the
re-identifiability issue and thoroughly study the unicity of smartphone apps on
a dataset containing 54,893 Android users collected over a period of 7 months.
Our study finds that any 4 apps installed by a user are enough (more than 95%
times) for the re-identification of the user in our dataset. As the complete
list of installed apps is unique for 99% of the users in our dataset, it can be
easily used to track/profile the users by a service such as Twitter that has
access to the whole list of installed apps of users. As our analyzed dataset is
small as compared to the total population of Android users, we also study how
unicity would vary with larger datasets. This work emphasizes the need of
better privacy guards against collection, use and release of the list of
installed apps.Comment: 10 pages, 9 Figures, Appeared at ACM CCS Workshop on Privacy in

On the Complexity of -Closeness Anonymization and Related Problems
An important issue in releasing individual data is to protect the sensitive
information from being leaked and maliciously utilized. Famous privacy
preserving principles that aim to ensure both data privacy and data integrity,
such as -anonymity and -diversity, have been extensively studied both
theoretically and empirically. Nonetheless, these widely-adopted principles are
still insufficient to prevent attribute disclosure if the attacker has partial
knowledge about the overall sensitive data distribution. The -closeness
principle has been proposed to fix this, which also has the benefit of
supporting numerical sensitive attributes. However, in contrast to
-anonymity and -diversity, the theoretical aspect of -closeness has
not been well investigated.
We initiate the first systematic theoretical study on the -closeness
principle under the commonly-used attribute suppression model. We prove that
for every constant such that , it is NP-hard to find an optimal
-closeness generalization of a given table. The proof consists of several
reductions each of which works for different values of , which together
cover the full range. To complement this negative result, we also provide exact
and fixed-parameter algorithms. Finally, we answer some open questions
regarding the complexity of -anonymity and -diversity left in the
literature.Comment: An extended abstract to appear in DASFAA 201
Professional service firms are relationship marketers: But does size matter?
There are few research-based insights into professional service firms’ (PSFs) contemporary marketing practices. This is unfortunate as the professional services sector is a key contributor to growth in Australian and other economies around the world. As professional services are unique in a number of ways and their operations and marketing activities inextricably intertwined, the present study investigated the extent to which PSFs practice marketing and whether this differs according to size. Depth interviews were held with thirty seven Australian senior managers in four key industries. We examined the extent of relationship marketing, conceptualised at an overall managerial level as well as four sub-practices identified in research by Coviello and colleagues. We found relationship management and interaction marketing were the most common practices, which is consistent with the inseparability concept, and that relationship management and database marketing were more common in larger firms, which is consistent with their relative resource strength
Investment in epilepsy monitoring units improves epilepsy care-experience in a regional neuroscience centre
An evaluation of the clinical yield of inpatient long-term video-EEG (vEEG) in a new epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) was undertaken, with findings compared to the centre's prior method of bedside vEEG recording in a standard neurology ward, as reported in 2004. A retrospective analysis of neurophysiology reports for all adults who underwent elective vEEG monitoring in the EMU at Cork University Hospital between January 2015 and July 2016 was conducted. Of 115 vEEG studies in the EMU, 100 (87.0%) were deemed diagnostically conclusive, 14 (12.2%) failed to catch any clinical events and showed normal EEG throughout, and one (0.9%) captured spells of unclear clinical significanceâ the corresponding figures reported in 2004 for bedside vEEGs were 21.3%, 77% and 1.6%, respectively. The EMU offers a more effective method of recording inpatient vEEG, which aids decision-making and improves clinical outcomes. Some evidence-based measures which could further enhance diagnostic yield are discussed
The influence of ocean variations on the climate of Ireland
The influence of the ocean circulation on the climate of Ireland is more subtle than it first appears. Temperatures in Ireland are warmer than similar Pacific maritime climates. It is heat - carried primarily in the Atlantic overturning circulation - released over the Atlantic that provides this additional warmth. We investigate variations in Irish climate using long-term station-based time series. The Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) explains over 90% of the pronounced decadal temperature and summer precipitation variation. Understanding the impact of these ocean variations when interpreting long climate records, particularly in the context of a changing climate, is crucial
MicroRNAs as Novel Biomarkers for Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is a complex phenotypically diverse genetic disease, involving a variety of changes in gene expression and structure. Recent advances in molecular profiling technology have made great progress in unravelling the molecular taxonomy of breast cancer, which has shed new light on the aetiology of the disease and also heralded great potential for the development of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Mi(cro)RNAs are a contemporary class of small noncoding endogenous RNA molecules, generating great excitement in the clinical and scientific communities.
The recent discovery that miRNA expression is frequently dysregulated in cancer has uncovered an entirely new repertoire of molecular factors upstream of gene expression, which warrants extensive investigation to further elucidate their precise role in malignancy. We present a comprehensive and timely review of the role of miRNAs in cancer: addressing miRNA function, their putative role as oncogenes or tumor suppressors, with a particular emphasis on breast cancer throughout. We discuss the recent discovery of quantifiable circulating cancer-associated miRNAs, which heralds immense potential for their use as novel minimally invasive biomarkers for breast and other cancers. Finally, we comment on the potential role of miRNAs in breast cancer management, particularly in improving current prognostic tools and achieving the goal of individualized cancer

The nonlinear time-dependent response of isotactic polypropylene
Tensile creep tests, tensile relaxation tests and a tensile test with a
constant rate of strain are performed on injection-molded isotactic
polypropylene at room temperature in the vicinity of the yield point. A
constitutive model is derived for the time-dependent behavior of
semi-crystalline polymers. A polymer is treated as an equivalent network of
chains bridged by permanent junctions. The network is modelled as an ensemble
of passive meso-regions (with affine nodes) and active meso-domains (where
junctions slip with respect to their positions in the bulk medium with various
rates). The distribution of activation energies for sliding in active
meso-regions is described by a random energy model. Adjustable parameters in
the stress--strain relations are found by fitting experimental data. It is
demonstrated that the concentration of active meso-domains monotonically grows
with strain, whereas the average potential energy for sliding of junctions and
the standard deviation of activation energies suffer substantial drops at the
yield point. With reference to the concept of dual population of crystalline
lamellae, these changes in material parameters are attributed to transition
from breakage of subsidiary (thin) lamellae in the sub-yield region to
fragmentation of primary (thick) lamellae in the post-yield region of
deformation.Comment: 29 pages, 12 figure
Reconceptualizing professional service firm innovation capability: Scale development
Building on capability theory, this paper presents a reconceptualization of the innovation capability construct within a knowledge-intensive service context, specifically, professional service firms (PSFs). Employing a rigorous multi-stage scale development process we interviewed 37 participants and surveyed 463 respondents across a wide range of PSFs including lawyers, accountants, consulting engineers and management consultants. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses highlight the multi-dimensional nature of innovation capability within this context. Three dimensions were identified: client-focused, marketing focused, and technology-focused innovation capability. We provide evidence of face validity, content validity, convergent and discriminant validity, nomological validity and reliability of our scale. Our scale offers a new way to measure innovation capability within PSFs and highlights the need to move beyond the narrow manufacturing mind-set focus of prior innovation research. Implications for theory and practice are discussed
