    Deuteron Dipole Polarizabilities and Sum Rules

    The scalar, vector, and tensor components of the (generalized) deuteron electric polarizability are calculated, as well as their logarithmic modifications. Several of these quantities arise in the treatment of the nuclear corrections to the deuterium Lamb shift and the deuterium hyperfine structure. A variety of second-generation potential models are used and a (subjective) error is assigned to the calculations. The zero-range approximation is used to analyze a subset of the results, and a simple relativistic version of this approximation is developed.Comment: 14 pages, LaTex - submitted to Physical Review

    European air quality maps 2005 including uncertainty analysis

    The objective of this report is (a) the updating and refinement of European air quality maps based on annual statistics of the 2005 observational data reported by EEA Member countries in 2006, and (b) the further improvement of the interpolation methodologies. The paper presents the results achieved and an uncertainty analysis of the interpolated maps and builds upon earlier reports from Horalék et al. (2005; 2007)

    The external-field QCD Sum Rules method is used to evaluate the coupling constant of the light isoscalar-scalar meson (``σ\sigma'' or \epsilon) to the nucleon. The contributions that come from the excited nucleon states and the response of the continuum threshold to the external field are calculated. The obtained value of the coupling constant is compatible with the large value required in one-boson exchange potential models of the two-nucleon interaction.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    \pi N scattering in relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory revisited

    We have analyzed pion-nucleon scattering using the manifestly relativistic covariant framework of Infrared Regularization up to {\cal O}(q^3) in the chiral expansion, where q is a generic small momentum. We describe the low-energy phase shifts with a similar quality as previously achieved with Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory, \sqrt{s}\lesssim1.14 GeV. New values are provided for the {\cal O}(q^2) and {\cal O}(q^3) low-energy constants, which are compared with previous determinations. This is also the case for the scattering lengths and volumes. Finally, we have unitarized the previous amplitudes and as a result the energy range where data are reproduced increases significantly.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, 5 table

    Pertinent Dirac structure for QCD sum rules of meson-baryon coupling constants

    Using general baryon interpolating fields JBJ_B for B=N,Ξ,ÎŁ,B= N, \Xi, \Sigma, without derivative, we study QCD sum rules for meson-baryon couplings and their dependence on Dirac structures for the two-point correlation function with a meson i\int d^4x e^{iqx} \bra 0|{\rm T}[J_B(x)\bar{J}_B(0)] |{\cal M}(p)\ket. Three distinct Dirac structures are compared: iÎł5i\gamma_5, i\gamma_5\fslash{p}, and Îł5σΌΜqÎŒpÎœ\gamma_5\sigma_{\mu\nu}q^\mu p^\nu structures. From the dependence of the OPE on general baryon interpolating fields, we propose criteria for choosing an appropriate Dirac structure for the coupling sum rules. The Îł5σΌΜqÎŒpÎœ\gamma_5\sigma_{\mu\nu}q^\mu p^\nu sum rules satisfy the criteria while the iÎł5i\gamma_5 sum rules beyond the chiral limit do not. For the i\gamma_5\fslash{p} sum rules, the large continuum contributions prohibit reliable prediction for the couplings. Thus, the Îł5σΌΜqÎŒpÎœ\gamma_5\sigma_{\mu\nu}q^\mu p^\nu structure seems pertinent for realistic predictions. In the SU(3) limit, we identify the OPE terms responsible for the F/DF/D ratio. We then study the dependence of the ratio on the baryon interpolating fields.     Soft-core meson-baryon interactions. II. πN\pi N and K+NK^+ N scattering

    The πN\pi N potential includes the t-channel exchanges of the scalar-mesons σ\sigma and f_0, vector-meson ρ\rho, tensor-mesons f_2 and f_2' and the Pomeron as well as the s- and u-channel exchanges of the nucleon N and the resonances Δ\Delta, Roper and S_{11}. These resonances are not generated dynamically. We consider them as, at least partially, genuine three-quark states and we treat them in the same way as the nucleon. The latter two resonances were needed to find the proper behavior of the phase shifts at higher energies in the corresponding partial waves. The soft-core πN\pi N-model gives an excellent fit to the empirical πN\pi N S- and P-wave phase shifts up to T_{lab}=600 MeV. Also the scattering lengths have been reproduced well and the soft-pion theorems for low-energy πN\pi N scattering are satisfied. The soft-core model for the K+NK^+ N interaction is an SU_f(3)-extension of the soft-core πN\pi N-model. The K+NK^+ N potential includes the t-channel exchanges of the scalar-mesons a_0, σ\sigma and f_0, vector-mesons ρ\rho, ω\omega and ϕ\phi, tensor-mesons a_2, f_2 and f_2' and the Pomeron as well as u-channel exchanges of the hyperons Λ\Lambda and ÎŁ\Sigma. The fit to the empirical K+NK^+ N S-, P- and D-wave phase shifts up to T_{lab}=600 MeV is reasonable and certainly reflects the present state of the art. Since the various K+NK^+ N phase shift analyses are not very consistent, also scattering observables are compared with the soft-core K+NK^+ N-model. A good agreement for the total and differential cross sections as well as the polarizations is found.Comment: 24 pages, 20 PostScript figures, revtex4, submitted to Phys. Rev.

The search for alternatives for antimicrobials and other tools which can improve the health status of the farm is intensified. One example of an alternative for antimicrobials is Daafit, a combination of lauric acid and glycerol-mono-laurate, produced by the firm Daavision B.V.

    Morphodynamic impact of sea-level rise on the Western Scheldt estuary and its mouth region:insights from an idealized modeling study

    Estuaries lie at the interface of land and sea, and are particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR). Understanding the impact of SLR on the long-term (order decades to centuries) morphodynamic evolution of estuaries is of great importance to successfully manage these areas, such as maintaining shipping routes and preserving ecosystems. An analysis of historical water level data at Vlissingen (Figure 1) between 1900 and present revealed that the mean sea level has been rising at about 2 mm/yr. Moreover, these data show that the amplitude of the dominant tidal constituent (M2) has been rising as well during this period (Figure 2), which most likely is caused by the rising mean sea level (Pickering et al. 2012, Idier et al, 2017). The specific aims of this study are 1) to investigate the impact of SLR (2 mm/yr) on long-term evolution of the Western Scheldt and its mouth region, 2) to systematically explore sensitivity of model results to different rates of SLR (0-10 mm/yr), and 3) to address the combined effect of SLR and changes in tidal characteristics on the evolution of the estuary. To this end, the coupled SWAN-Delft3D numerical model is used, which accounts for both flow and waves. A curvilinear grid is created, which extends from Ghent to 30 km seaward. As a wave climate, a highly simplified wave forcing (constant wave height, wave periods and wave direction) is considered. The methodology employed is that first the model is spun-up until a bathymetry is obtained that is comparable to observations. Subsequently, the latter bathymetry is used to address the objectives An important model result is that stronger tidal currents are crucial to prevent sedimentation in channels caused by SLR.     The Lambda-Lambda Interaction and ^{6}_{Lambda Lambda}He

    An OBE potential model for the ^{1}S_0 S = -2 interaction is analyzed with emphasis on the role of coupling between the Lambda Lambda, N Xi, and Sigma Sigma channels. Singlet scalar exchange, an approximation to two-pion exchange, is significant in all channels; surprisingly, the one-pion exchange component is almost negligible. The size of the channel coupling as a function of the overall strength of the OBE model potential is examined. Implications of the analysis for the binding energy of ^{6}_{Lambda Lambda}He are considered; the new experimental datum may suggest a consistency between the extracted Lambda Lambda matrix element and the relation implied by SU(3) among OBE baryon-baryon interactions. \\Comment: 4 pages brief report to Physical Review

    Soft-core baryon-baryon potentials for the complete baryon octet

    SU(3) symmetry relations on the recently constructed hyperon-nucleon potentials are used to develop potential models for all possible baryon-baryon interaction channels. The main focus is on the interaction channels with total strangeness S=-2, -3, and -4, for which no experimental data exist yet. The potential models for these channels are based on SU(3) extensions of potential models for the S=0 and S=-1 sectors, which are fitted to experimental data. Although the SU(3) symmetry is not taken to be exact, the S=0 and S=-1 sectors still provide the necessary constraints to fix all free parameters. The potentials for the S=-2, -3, and -4 sectors, therefore, do not contain any additional free parameters, which makes them the first models of this kind. Various properties of the potentials are illustrated by giving results for scattering lengths, bound states, and total cross sections.Comment: 22 pages RevTex, 6 postscript figure
