The Ebbs and Flows of Gulf War Protests
Operation Desert Storm was not a patriotic triumph for many U.S. citizens. Numerous Americans silently disapproved of the war, while others defiantly created a movement of Gulf War dissenters. This reenactment of the antiwar movement will be the focus of this paper. More specifically, the paper will trace the inception, growth and decline of this oppositional movement. Methodologically, this paper studies the movement\u27s ebbs and flows through a content analysis of newspapers and an ethnographic case study. In the end, this study reveals that the slow and steady growth of the movement during the last months of 1990 was surpassed by a rash of movement activity around the January onset of the war. Yet, this flurry of activity around the middle of January became a two-week milestone as the protest size began to shrink in February and early March

Students for Peace: Contextual and Framing Motivations of Antiwar Activism
This article traces the development of peace activism among undergraduate social work students. In doing so, it explores how social statuses, political contexts, and collective action frames affect the likelihood of joining the movement against the Afghanistan war (2001 to current). After analyzing data from a multicampus sample of Bachelors in Social Work (BSW) students (n = 159), results show that peace activism was predicted by level of education as well as perceptions of proper foreign policy, the relative efficacy of social movement tactics, and identification with specific activist ideals. Finally, being situated in activist networks fostered greater peace activism while the ascribed statuses of race, class, and gender were poor predictors of peace activism
Some Methodological Concerns When Estimating the Size of Organizing Activities
Researchers and organizers recognize that social movements experience periods of inception, expansion, and decline. Although the movement literature is laden with numerous theoretical formulations on this topic, there are few articles that overtly address the issue of data collection. This paper addresses this methodological issue in detail. In doing so, we use previous media research and two case studies to illustrate the problems associated with the most frequently used data sources of event size. Finally, the paper suggests several research strategies that might enhance the accuracy of those studies that try to trace the protest cycles of community organizing efforts
Relations Between Timing Features and Colors in the X-Ray Binary 4U 0614+09
We study the correlations between timing and X-ray spectral properties in the
low mass X-ray binary 4U 0614+09 using a large (265-ks) data set obtained with
the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. We find strong quasi-periodic oscillations
(QPOs) of the X-ray flux, like the kilohertz QPOs in many other X-ray binaries
with accreting neutron stars, with frequencies ranging from 1329 Hz down to 418
Hz and, perhaps, as low as 153 Hz. We report the highest frequency QPO yet from
any low mass X-ray binary at 1329+-4 Hz, which has implications for neutron
star structure. This QPO has a 3.5-sigma single-trial significance, for an
estimated 40 trials the significance is 2.4-sigma. Besides the kilohertz QPOs,
the Fourier power spectra show four additional components: high frequency noise
(HFN), described by a broken power-law with a break frequency between 0.7 and
45 Hz, very low frequency noise (VLFN), which is fitted as a power-law below 1
Hz, and two broad Lorentzians with centroid frequencies varying from 6 to 38 Hz
and 97 to 158 Hz, respectively. We find strong correlations between the
frequencies of the kilohertz QPOs, the frequency of the 6 to 38 Hz broad
Lorentzian, the break frequency of the HFN, the strength of both the HFN and
the VLFN and the position of the source in the hard X-ray color vs. intensity
diagram. The frequency of the 97 to 158 Hz Lorentzian does not correlate with
these parameters. We also find that the relation between power density and
break frequency of the HFN is similar to that established for black hole
candidates in the low state. We suggest that the changing mass accretion rate
is responsible for the correlated changes in all these parameters.Comment: ApJ, referee
The ladies trial: laparoscopic peritoneal lavage or resection for purulent peritonitisA and Hartmann's procedure or resection with primary anastomosis for purulent or faecal peritonitisB in perforated diverticulitis (NTR2037)
Background: Recently, excellent results are reported on laparoscopic lavage in patients with purulent perforated diverticulitis as an alternative for sigmoidectomy and ostomy. The objective of this study is to determine whether LaparOscopic LAvage and drainage is a safe and effective treatment for patients with purulent peritonitis (LOLA-arm) and to determine the optimal resectional strategy in patients with a purulent or faecal peritonitis (DIVA-arm: perforated DIVerticulitis: sigmoidresection with or without Anastomosis). Methods/Design: In this multicentre randomised trial all patients with perforated diverticulitis are included. Upon laparoscopy, patients with purulent peritonitis are treated with laparoscopic lavage and drainage, Hartmann's procedure or sigmoidectomy with primary anastomosis in a ratio of 2:1:1 (LOLA-arm). Patients with faecal peritonitis will be randomised 1:1 between Hartmann's procedure and resection with primary anastomosis (DIVA-arm). The primary combined endpoint of the LOLA-arm is major morbidity and mortality. A sample size of 132:66:66 patients will be able to detect a difference in the primary endpoint from 25% in resectional groups compared to 10% in the laparoscopic lavage group (two sided alpha = 5%, power = 90%). Endpoint of the DIVA-arm is stoma free survival one year after initial surgery. Independent policy learning: Contextual diffusion of active labour market policies
This chapter analyses in which ways diffusion based on interdependent policy learning explains the spread of active labour market policies (ALMP) in the OECD countries. By applying error correction models using multiplicative spatial Prais-Winsten regressions for analyzing the diffusion of ALMPs in 22 OECD countries from 1991–2013, we find evidence of governments adapting labour market policy strategies that have proven successful, that is, perform well in increasing labour market participation in other countries. However, interdependent learning is conditional on the institutional framework: policymakers rather learn from the experience of other countries in the same welfare regime. Even more importantly, the results bear witness to the importance of the European Employment Strategy (EES) as an international coordination framework facilitating policy learning
