Toward a More Comprehensive Understanding of Interpersonal Violence: Introduction to the Special Issue on Interconnections among Different Types of Violence

    Get PDF
Recent epidemiological work shows that most victims of interpersonal violence have experienced other forms of violence as well. Similarly, perpetrators of one type of violence often engage in aggression in other contexts, and many people report both perpetration and victimization. This special issue presents 8 studies on the leading edge of research investigating the interconnections among different forms of violence, abuse, and maltreatment. They examine links between sexual and physical abuse, intimate partner violence, teen dating violence, community violence, and violent media. Together, they suggest that focusing on the co-occurrence of different types of violence has the potential to advance our understanding of the causes and consequences of violence and to develop more effective approaches to prevention and intervention

Rectangular subsonic jet flow field measurements

    Get PDF
Flow field measurements of three subsonic rectangular cold air jets are presented. The three cases had aspect ratios of 1x2, 1x4 at a Mach number of 0.09 and an aspect ratio of 1x2 at a Mach number of 0.9. All measurements were made using a 3-D laser Doppler anemometer system. The data includes the mean velocity vector, all Reynolds stress tensor components, turbulent kinetic energy and velocity correlation coefficients. The data are presented in tabular and graphical form. No analysis of the measured data or comparison to other published data is made

When is it time to get married? Or when should the assay user and the assay developer collaborate?

Hormone assays are being developed in the laboratory to detect specific molecular markers in nonclinical populations. Epidemiology is increasingly using these assays to improve the precision with which disease processes and exposures can be defined. This growing body of molecular epidemiology requires a high degree of cooperation between the assay developer and the assay user. We draw on our experience in using a sensitive hormone assay for the detection of early pregnancy via urinary human chorionic gonadotropin to illustrate these points. We conclude that this collaborative effort, in addition to making this study possible, has provided unexpected rewards

Mutation-specific differences in arrhythmias and drug responses in CPVT patients : simultaneous patch clamp and video imaging of iPSC derived cardiomyocytes

Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is an inherited cardiac disease characterized by arrhythmias under adrenergic stress. Mutations in the cardiac ryanodine receptor (RYR2) are the leading cause for CPVT. We characterized electrophysiological properties of CPVT patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) carrying different mutations in RYR2 and evaluated effects of carvedilol and flecainide on action potential (AP) and contractile properties of hiPSC-CMs. iPSC-CMs were generated from skin biopsies of CPVT patients carrying exon 3 deletion (E3D) and L4115F mutation in RYR2. APs and contractile movement were recorded simultaneously from the same hiPSC-CMs. Differences in AP properties of ventricular like CMs were seen in CPVT and control CMs: APD90 of both E3D (n = 20) and L4115F (n = 25) CPVT CMs was shorter than in control CMs (n = 15). E3D-CPVT CMs had shortest AP duration, lowest AP amplitude, upstroke velocity and more depolarized diastolic potential than controls. Adrenaline had positive and carvedilol and flecainide negative chronotropic effect in all hiPSC CMs. CPVT CMs had increased amount of delayed after depolarizations (DADs) and early after depolarizations (EADs) after adrenaline exposure. E3D CPVT CMs had the most DADs, EADs, and tachyarrhythmia. Discordant negatively coupled alternans was seen in L4115F CPVT CMs. Carvedilol cured almost all arrhythmias in L4115F CPVT CMs. Both drugs decreased contraction amplitude in all hiPSC CMs. E3D CPVT CMs have electrophysiological properties, which render them more prone to arrhythmias. iPSC-CMs provide a unique platform for disease modeling and drug screening for CPVT. Combining electrophysiological measurements, we can gain deeper insight into mechanisms of arrhythmias.Peer reviewe

Detecting brute-force attacks on cryptocurrency wallets

Blockchain is a distributed ledger, which is protected against malicious modifications by means of cryptographic tools, e.g. digital signatures and hash functions. One of the most prominent applications of blockchains is cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin. In this work, we consider a particular attack on wallets for collecting assets in a cryptocurrency network based on brute-force search attacks. Using Bitcoin as an example, we demonstrate that if the attack is implemented successfully, a legitimate user is able to prove that fact of this attack with a high probability. We also consider two options for modification of existing cryptocurrency protocols for dealing with this type of attacks. First, we discuss a modification that requires introducing changes in the Bitcoin protocol and allows diminishing the motivation to attack wallets. Second, an alternative option is the construction of special smart-contracts, which reward the users for providing evidence of the brute-force attack. The execution of this smart-contract can work as an automatic alarm that the employed cryptographic mechanisms, and (particularly) hash functions, have an evident vulnerability.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures; published versio
