Mechanism of haematotoxicity induced by phenylhydrazine: a review
This work was carried out to show the effects of phenylhydrazine (PHZ) induced anaemic condition. Anaemic condition is defined as reduction in red blood cells (RBC) than normal number of red blood cells. The anti-anaemic activity can be studied using the changes in haematological parameters (PCV, RBC & Haemoglobin) influenced by PHZ [(40mg/kg p.o.)] in rats. PHZ, a potent chemical that causes different effects on different tissues at several levels. Administration of PHZ causes haemolytic anaemia, genotoxic effects and rose in iron absorption in spleen, liver and duodenum & causes change in iron metabolism. PHZ acts by activating immune response which triggers phagocytosis and also interfere with the binding of erythropoietin (EPO) receptors and further JAK-STAT pathway. PHZ also causes genotoxic effect by forming single strand DNA damage. In view of lipid peroxidation along with the formation of Thiobarbituric acid (TBA)-reactive malonyldialdehyde, it is recommend that PHZ induces anaemia as an outcome of peroxidation of RBC membrane lipids and this effect may be a upshot of the autoxidation of the drug and the interaction of membrane lipids and oxygen radical
Preparation, Characterization and In Vitro Drug Release Studies of 6-mercaptopurine Thin Film
Oral thin films of 6-mercaptopurine were fabricated from mucoadhesive polymer, chitosan and polyvinylpyrrolidone for the purpose of prolonging drug release and improving its bioavailability. All fabricated film formulations prepared were smooth and translucent, with good flexibility. The weight and thickness of all the formulations were found to be uniform. These films were also evaluated for surface pH, folding endurance, swelling percentage (% S) and in vitro disintegration time. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) were used to evaluate the physico-chemical nature of the films. In-vitro drug release have shown enhanced release profiles for thin films compared to pure drug and the release patterns have been found to be pH dependant. The results of the study reveals that fabrication of 6-MP oral thin film by using solvent cast technology is a simple and an efficient method for drug delivery to achieve desired therapeutic compliance.Keywords: 6-mercaptopurine; In Vitro Drug Release; SEM; FTI
Women and Illegal Activities: Gender Differences and Women's Willingness to Comply Over Time
In recent years the topics of illegal activities such as corruption or tax evasion have attracted a great deal of attention. However, there is still a lack of substantial empirical evidence about the determinants of compliance. The aim of this paper is to investigate empirically whether women are more willing to be compliant than men and whether we observe (among women and in general) differences in attitudes among similar age groups in different time periods (cohort effect) or changing attitudes of the same cohorts over time (age effect) using data from eight Western European countries from the World Values Survey and the European Values Survey that span the period from 1981 to 1999. The results reveal higher willingness to comply among women and an age rather than a cohort effect. Working Paper 06-5
Specific-Heat Exponent of Random-Field Systems via Ground-State Calculations
Exact ground states of three-dimensional random field Ising magnets (RFIM)
with Gaussian distribution of the disorder are calculated using
graph-theoretical algorithms. Systems for different strengths h of the random
fields and sizes up to N=96^3 are considered. By numerically differentiating
the bond-energy with respect to h a specific-heat like quantity is obtained,
which does not appear to diverge at the critical point but rather exhibits a
cusp. We also consider the effect of a small uniform magnetic field, which
allows us to calculate the T=0 susceptibility. From a finite-size scaling
analysis, we obtain the critical exponents \nu=1.32(7), \alpha=-0.63(7),
\eta=0.50(3) and find that the critical strength of the random field is
h_c=2.28(1). We discuss the significance of the result that \alpha appears to

Using the Wigner-Ibach Surmise to Analyze Terrace-Width Distributions: History, User's Guide, and Advances
A history is given of the applications of the simple expression generalized
from the surmise by Wigner and also by Ibach to extract the strength of the
interaction between steps on a vicinal surface, via the terrace width
distribution (TWD). A concise guide for use with experiments and a summary of

YREC: The Yale Rotating Stellar Evolution Code
The stellar evolution code YREC is outlined with emphasis on its applications
to helio- and asteroseismology. The procedure for calculating calibrated solar
and stellar models is described. Other features of the code such as a non-local
treatment of convective core overshoot, and the implementation of a
parametrized description of turbulence in stellar models, are considered in
some detail. The code has been extensively used for other astrophysical

An Exploration of the Paradigm for the 2-3 Hour Period Gap in Cataclysmic Variables
We critically examine the basic paradigm for the origin of the 2-3 hr period
gap in cataclysmic variables (CVs). We carry out an extensive population
synthesis study of CVs starting from ~ 3 x 10^6 primordial binaries, and
evolving some ~ 2 x 10^4 surviving systems through their CV phase. In
particular we study current-epoch distributions of CVs in the ,
R_{2}-P_{orb}, M_{2}-P_{orb}, q-P_{orb}, T_{eff}-P_{orb}, and L_{2}-P_{orb}
planes, where is the mass transfer rate, q is the mass ratio M_2/M_1,
and M_2, R_2, T_{eff}, and L_2 are the donor star mass, radius, effective
temperature, and luminosity, respectively. This work presents a new perspective
on theoretical studies of the long-term evolution of CVs. In particular, we
show that if the current paradigm is correct, the secondary masses in CVs just
above the period gap should be as much as ~ 50% lower than would be inferred if
one assumes a main-sequence radius-mass relation for the donor star.Comment: Accepted in Ap
Low-energy excitations in the three-dimensional random-field Ising model
The random-field Ising model (RFIM), one of the basic models for quenched
disorder, can be studied numerically with the help of efficient ground-state
algorithms. In this study, we extend these algorithm by various methods in
order to analyze low-energy excitations for the three-dimensional RFIM with
Gaussian distributed disorder that appear in the form of clusters of connected
spins. We analyze several properties of these clusters. Our results support the
validity of the droplet-model description for the RFIM.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
