Magnetic Ordering in V-Layers of the Superconducting System of Sr2VFeAsO3
Results of transport, magnetic, thermal, and 75As-NMR measurements are
presented for superconducting Sr2VFeAsO3 with an alternating stack of FeAs and
perovskite-like block layers. Although apparent anomalies in magnetic and
thermal properties have been observed at ~150 K, no anomaly in transport
behaviors has been observed at around the same temperature. These results
indicate that V ions in the Sr2VO3-block layers have localized magnetic moments
and that V-electrons do not contribute to the Fermi surface. The electronic
characteristics of Sr2VFeAsO3 are considered to be common to those of other

Transient Increase in Zn2+ in Hippocampal CA1 Pyramidal Neurons Causes Reversible Memory Deficit
The translocation of synaptic Zn2+ to the cytosolic compartment has been studied to understand Zn2+ neurotoxicity in neurological diseases. However, it is unknown whether the moderate increase in Zn2+ in the cytosolic compartment affects memory processing in the hippocampus. In the present study, the moderate increase in cytosolic Zn2+ in the hippocampus was induced with clioquinol (CQ), a zinc ionophore. Zn2+ delivery by Zn-CQ transiently attenuated CA1 long-term potentiation (LTP) in hippocampal slices prepared 2 h after i.p. injection of Zn-CQ into rats, when intracellular Zn2+ levels was transiently increased in the CA1 pyramidal cell layer, followed by object recognition memory deficit. Object recognition memory was transiently impaired 30 min after injection of ZnCl2 into the CA1, but not after injection into the dentate gyrus that did not significantly increase intracellular Zn2+ in the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus. Object recognition memory deficit may be linked to the preferential increase in Zn2+ and/or the preferential vulnerability to Zn2+ in CA1 pyramidal neurons. In the case of the cytosolic increase in endogenous Zn2+ in the CA1 induced by 100 mM KCl, furthermore, object recognition memory was also transiently impaired, while ameliorated by co-injection of CaEDTA to block the increase in cytosolic Zn2+. The present study indicates that the transient increase in cytosolic Zn2+ in CA1 pyramidal neurons reversibly impairs object recognition memory
Discovery of the Coldest Imaged Companion of a Sun-Like Star
We present the discovery of a brown dwarf or possible planet at a projected
separation of 1.9" = 29 AU around the star GJ 758, placing it between the
separations at which substellar companions are expected to form by core
accretion (~5 AU) or direct gravitational collapse (typically >100 AU). The
object was detected by direct imaging of its thermal glow with Subaru/HiCIAO.
At 10-40 times the mass of Jupiter and a temperature of 550-640 K, GJ 758 B
constitutes one of the few known T-type companions, and the coldest ever to be
imaged in thermal light around a Sun-like star. Its orbit is likely eccentric
and of a size comparable to Pluto's orbit, possibly as a result of
gravitational scattering or outward migration. A candidate second companion is

Search for dinucleon decay into pions at Super-Kamiokande
A search for dinucleon decay into pions with the Super-Kamiokande detector
has been performed with an exposure of 282.1 kiloton-years. Dinucleon decay is
a process that violates baryon number by two units. We present the first search
for dinucleon decay to pions in a large water Cherenkov detector. The modes
O C, O
N, and O
O are investigated. No significant excess in the
Super-Kamiokande data has been found, so a lower limit on the lifetime of the
process per oxygen nucleus is determined. These limits are:
years,
years, and
years. The lower
limits on each mode are about two orders of magnitude better than previous

Near-Infrared Multi-Band Photometry of the Substellar Companion GJ 758 B
GJ 758 B is a cold (~600K) companion to a Sun-like star at 29 AU projected
separation, which was recently detected with high-contrast imaging. Here we
present photometry of the companion in seven photometric bands from
Subaru/HiCIAO, Gemini/NIRI and Keck/NIRC2, providing a rich sampling of the
spectral energy distribution in the 1-5 micron wavelength range. A clear
detection at 1.58 micron combined with an upper limit at 1.69 micron shows
methane absorption in the atmosphere of the companion. The mass of the
companion remains uncertain, but an updated age estimate indicates that the
most likely mass range is ~30-40 Mjup. In addition, we present an updated
astrometric analysis that imposes tighter constraints on GJ 758 B's orbit and
identifies the proposed second candidate companion, "GJ 758 C", as a background
