An Engage-ment of the Significant Everyday

This paper investigates the engagement of our everyday lives with the place we inhabit. Three case studies introduce us to engagement through architecture and the experiences that are created. In conjunction with case studies, site analysis of the ecological and cultural site will reveal significant everyday experiences for the individual. Architecture can then act as a filter through which the site trickles into the interior experiences of the individual’s everyday life

<i>Aloe erensii, Aloe jucunda</i> and a new cultivar

Aloe erensii and A. jucunda are briefly described both in cultivation and in habitat. Their conservation status records based on IUCN criteria are emphasised since both species are endangered or critically endangered in the wild. An attractive hybrid between these two species has been in cultivation for a significant time and is here formally named Aloe 'Erensjuc'

Abdominal massage for the relief of constipation in people with Parkinson’s: a qualitative study

Objectives. To explore the experiences of people with Parkinson&rsquo;s (PwP) who suffer from constipation, the impact this has on their lives, and the effect of using lifestyle changes and abdominal massage as a form of constipation management. Method. Fourteen semistructured interviews were completed (8 males and 6 females; mean age 72.2 years) at the end of a care programme, which consisted of either lifestyle advice and abdominal massage (intervention group;) or lifestyle advice only (control group;). Data were analysed using constant-comparison techniques and Framework methods. Themes and key quotes were identified to depict major findings. Findings. Four key themes were identified: (i) the adverse impact of bowel problems on quality of life; (ii) positive experience of behaviour adjustments: experimentation; (iii) abdominal massage as a dynamic and relaxing tool: experiential learning (intervention group only); (iv) abdominal massage as a contingency plan: hesitation (control group only). Constipation was reported as having a significant impact on quality of life. Participants in both groups perceived lifestyle advice to relieve symptoms. Specific improvements were described in those who also received the abdominal massage. Conclusions. Both lifestyle advice and abdominal massage were perceived to be beneficial in relieving symptoms of constipation for PwP

How accurately do adult patients report their absence seizures?

We depend upon self-reporting to determine seizure frequency for epilepsy management decisions, but people often misreport their seizures. Here, we determined misreporting rates in adults with absence seizures, undergoing inpatient video-EEG telemetry (VET) or outpatient ambulatory electroencephalography (aEEG). Under-reporting rates were based on VET data, where behavior could be assessed, whilst over-reporting was assessed using both VET and aEEG. Forty-two patients (31 female and 11 males, median age 28.5 years) and 759 reported absence seizures were included in this study. Overall, only 24% of the 759 reported seizures had an associated EEG correlate, indicating a high over-reporting rate, which occurred in 57% of patients. Age, sex, time of epilepsy, VET versus aEEG, epilepsy syndrome or medication were not significant predictors of over-reporting. In the VET group in which we could assess both over- and under-reporting (22 patients), only 2 patients correctly reported their seizures, and patients were predominantly over-reporters or under reporters, not both. Only 26% of 423 absence seizures were reported. Use of zonisamide or valproate was associated with under-reporting, possibly through an impact on attention. These findings indicate that self-reported AS are a poor measure to use for treatment decisions due to both over- and under-reporting

Public relations in central government in New Zealand

James Grunig (1989) argues that public relations with the goal of mutual understanding (the two-way symmetrical model) is the most ethical, moral and effective. This model was used as an ideal to analyse public relations structures and practice in New Zealand's central government. It was found that in New Zealand the focus of governments since the 1980s has changed from producing information campaigns to shape public opinion on matters deemed to be in the public interest, to campaigns which favourably promote policy. In the latter type campaigns, such as that for the National Government's 1993 health reforms it can be argued that the intended outcome is political, aimed at producing support rather than promoting mutual understanding. This kind of focus and the strength of the public relations apparatus in government puts increased pressure on the news media and the issue of how well the public interest is being served in this type of situation is raised

Longitudinal teacher education and workforce study (LTEWS) final report

The Longitudinal Teacher Education Workforce Study (LTEWS) investigated the career progression of graduate teachers from teacher education into teaching employment in all states and territories across Australia in 2012 and the first half of 2013, and tracked their perceptions, over time, of the relevance and effectiveness of their teacher education programs. Specifically, it investigated: The career progression of the 2011 teacher education graduates from teacher education into, and possible exit from, teaching employment, including their utilisation into teaching, their retention and attrition in teaching in their early years, and their geographic and schools sector mobility; and, The views of teacher education graduates over time on the relevance and effectiveness of their teacher education for their teaching employment, including the relationship between their views of their teacher education and their early career teaching career. &nbsp
