A theoretical study of heterojunction and graded band gap type solar cells
The theory of heterojunction and graded bandgap solar cells was studied to help determine the material compositions and device dimensions needed for high efficiency solar cells. Because of the involved analysis of the fundamental equations describing solar cell operation, a general numerical device analysis program was used. A major part of the initial work was involved in modifying an existing silicon solar cell analysis program to account for the unique features of graded bandgap and heterojunction solar cells. The most successful III-V solar cells have so far been constructed in the GaAs and Gal-xAlxAs material systems; this project was concerned with such solar cells. The most efficient solar cell so far evaluated is an abrupt heterojunction cell with a pure AlAs layer at the surface with a GaAs substrate. The predicted efficiency for this cell is slightly larger than that of a graded bandgap Gal-xAlxAs solar cell
A theoretical study of heterojunction and graded band gap type solar cells
A computer program was designed for the analysis of variable composition solar cells and applied to several proposed solar cell structures using appropriate semiconductor materials. The program simulates solar cells made of a ternary alloy of two binary semiconductors with an arbitrary composition profile, and an abrupt or Gaussian doping profile of polarity n-on-p or p-on-n with arbitrary doping levels. Once the device structure is specified, the program numerically solves a complete set of differential equations and calculates electrostatic potential, quasi-Fermi levels, carrier concentrations and current densities, total current density and efficiency as functions of terminal voltage and position within the cell. These results are then recorded by computer in tabulated or plotted form for interpretation by the user
A theoretical study of heterojunction and graded band gap type solar cells
Heterojunction and graded band gap type solar cells are theoretically investigated. A computer program is developed to account for energy band gap variations and the resulting built-in electric fields which result from heterojunctions and graded energy band gaps. This program is used in studying solar cell operation under various optical irradiation conditions. Results are summarized
The development of low temperature curing adhesives
An approach for the development of a practical low temperature (293 K-311 K/68 F-100 F) curing adhesive system based on a family of amide/ester resins was studied and demonstrated. The work was conducted on resin optimization and adhesive compounding studies. An improved preparative method was demonstrated which involved the reaction of an amine-alcohol precursor, in a DMF solution with acid chloride. Experimental studies indicated that an adhesive formulation containing aluminum powder provided the best performance when used in conjunction with a commercial primer
GAPS IN THE HEISENBERG-ISING MODEL
We report on the closing of gaps in the ground state of the critical
Heisenberg-Ising chain at momentum . For half-filling, the gap closes at
special values of the anisotropy , integer. We explain
this behavior with the help of the Bethe Ansatz and show that the gap scales as
a power of the system size with variable exponent depending on . We use
a finite-size analysis to calculate this exponent in the critical region,
supplemented by perturbation theory at . For rational
fillings, the gap is shown to be closed for {\em all} values of and
the corresponding perturbation expansion in shows a remarkable
cancellation of various diagrams.Comment: 12 RevTeX pages + 4 figures upon reques
Energy Retrofit Field Study and Best Practices in a Hot-Humid Climate
Energy efficiency improvement as a component of comprehensive renovation was investigated under U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funding of the Building America Partnership for Improved Residential Construction (BA-PIRC). Researchers at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) worked with affordable housing partners renovating foreclosed homes built from the 1950's through the 2000's in the hot-humid climate (within the Southern census region), primarily in Florida. Researchers targeted a 30% improvement in whole-house energy efficiency along with the health and safety, durability, and comfort guidelines outlined in DOE's Builders Challenge Program (Version 1) Quality Criteria
Short-timescale Fluctuations in the Difference Light Curves of QSO 0957+561A,B: Microlensing or Noise?
From optical R band data of the double quasar QSO 0957+561A,B, we made two
new difference light curves (about 330 days of overlap between the time-shifted
light curve for the A image and the magnitude-shifted light curve for the B
image). We observed noisy behaviours around the zero line and no
short-timescale events (with a duration of months), where the term event refers
to a prominent feature that may be due to microlensing or another source of
variability. Only one event lasting two weeks and rising - 33 mmag was found.
Measured constraints on the possible microlensing variability can be used to
obtain information on the granularity of the dark matter in the main lensing
galaxy and the size of the source. In addition, one can also test the ability
of the observational noise to cause the rms averages and the local features of
the difference signals. We focused on this last issue. The combined
photometries were related to a process consisting of an intrinsic signal plus a
Gaussian observational noise. The intrinsic signal has been assumed to be
either a smooth function (polynomial) or a smooth function plus a stationary
noise process or a correlated stationary process. Using these three pictures
without microlensing, we derived some models totally consistent with the
observations. We finally discussed the sensitivity of our telescope (at Teide
Observatory) to several classes of microlensing variability.Comment: MNRAS, in press (LaTeX, 14 pages, 22 eps figures
"Caring for Insiderness": Phenomenologically informed insights that can guide practice.
Understanding the ââinsiderââ perspective has been a pivotal strength of qualitative research. Further than this, within the more applied fields in which the human activity of ââcaringââ takes place, such understanding of ââwhat it is likeââ for people from within their lifeworlds has also been acknowledged as the foundational starting point in order for ââcareââ to be caring. But we believe that more attention needs to be paid to this foundational generic phenomenon: what it means to understand the ââinsidernessââ of another, but more importantly, how to act on this in caring ways. We call this human phenomenon ââcaring for insiderness.ââ Drawing on existing phenomenological studies of marginal caring situations at the limits of caring capability, and through a process of phenomenologically oriented reflection, we interrogated some existential themes implicit in these publications that could lead to deeper insights for both theoretical and applied purposes. The paper provides direction for practices of caring by highlighting some dangers as well as some remedies along this path
Exact Solution of Heisenberg-liquid models with long-range coupling
We present the exact solution of two Heisenberg-liquid models of particles
with arbitrary spin interacting via a hyperbolic long-range potential. In
one model the spin-spin coupling has the simple antiferromagnetic Heisenberg
exchange form, while for the other model the interaction is of the
ferromagnetic Babujian-Takhatajan type. It is found that the Bethe ansatz
equations of these models have a similar structure to that of the
Babujian-Takhatajan spin chain. We also conjecture the integrability of a third
new spin-lattice model with long-range interaction.Comment: 7pages Revte
Universal parametric correlations in the transmission eigenvalue spectra of disordered conductors
We study the response of the transmission eigenvalue spectrum of disordered
metallic conductors to an arbitrary external perturbation. For systems without
time-reversal symmetry we find an exact non-perturbative solution for the
two-point correlation function, which exhibits a new kind of universal behavior
characteristic of disordered conductors. Systems with orthogonal and symplectic
symmetries are studied in the hydrodynamic regime.Comment: 10 pages, written in plain TeX, Preprint OUTP-93-36S (University of
