The Effects of Fish Trap Mesh Size on Reef Fish Catch off Southeastern Florida
Catch and mesh selectivity of wire-meshed fish traps were tested for eleven different mesh sizes ranging from 13 X 13 mm (0.5 x 0.5") to 76 x 152 mm (3 X 6"). A total of 1,810 fish (757 kg) representing 85 species and 28 families were captured during 330 trap hauls off southeastern Florida from December 1986 to July 1988. Mesh size significantly affected catches. The 1.5" hexagonal mesh caught the most fish by number, weight, and value. Catches tended to decline as meshes got smaller or larger. Individual fish size increased with larger meshes. Laboratory mesh retention experiments showed relationships between mesh shape and size and individual retention for snapper (Lutjanidae), grouper (Serranidae), jack (Carangidae), porgy (Sparidae), and surgeonfish (Acanthuridae). These relationships may be used to predict the effect of mesh sizes on catch rates. Because mesh size and shape greatly influenced catchability, regulating mesh size may provide a useful basis for managing the commercial trap fishery
Probabilistic Cross-Identification of Astronomical Sources
We present a general probabilistic formalism for cross-identifying
astronomical point sources in multiple observations. Our Bayesian approach,
symmetric in all observations, is the foundation of a unified framework for
object matching, where not only spatial information, but physical properties,
such as colors, redshift and luminosity, can also be considered in a natural
way. We provide a practical recipe to implement an efficient recursive
algorithm to evaluate the Bayes factor over a set of catalogs with known
circular errors in positions. This new methodology is crucial for studies
leveraging the synergy of today's multi-wavelength observations and to enter

Discovery of Extreme Examples of Superclustering in Aquarius
We report the discovery of two highly extended filaments and one extremely
high density knot within the region of Aquarius. The supercluster candidates
were chosen via percolation analysis of the Abell and ACO catalogs and include
only the richest clusters (R >= 1). The region examined is a 10x45 degree strip
and is now 87% complete in cluster redshift measurements to mag_10 = 18.3. In
all, we report 737 galaxy redshifts in 46 cluster fields. One of the
superclusters, dubbed Aquarius, is comprised of 14 Abell/ACO clusters and
extends 110h^-1Mpc in length only 7 degrees off the line-of-sight. On the
near-end of the Aquarius filament, another supercluster, dubbed Aquarius-Cetus,
extends for 75h^-1Mpc perpendicular to the line-of-sight. After fitting
ellipsoids to both Aquarius and Aquarius-Cetus, we find axis ratios (long-to-
midlength axis) of 4.3 for Aquarius and 3.0 for Aquarius-Cetus. We fit
ellipsoids to all N>=5 clumps of clusters in the Abell/ACO measured-z cluster
sample. The frequency of filaments with axis ratios >=3.0 (~20%) is nearly
identical with that found among `superclusters' in Monte Carlo simulations of
random and random- clumped clusters, however, so the rich Abell/ACO clusters
have no particular tendency toward filamentation. The Aquarius filament also
contains a `knot' of 6 clusters at Z ~0.11, with five of the clusters near
enough togeteher to represent an apparent overdensity of 150. There are
three other R >= 1 cluster density enhancements similar to this knot at lower
redshifts: Corona Borealis, the Shapely Concentration, and another grouping of
seven clusters in Microscopium. All four of these dense superclusters appear
near the point of breaking away from the Hubble Flow, and some may now be in

Density distributions for trapped one-dimensional spinor gases
We numerically evaluate the density distribution of a spin-1 bosonic
condensate in its ground state within a modifed Gross-Pitaevskii theory, which
is obtained by the combination of the exact solution of the corresponding
integrable model with the local density approximation. Our study reveals that
atoms in the m_F = 0 state are almost completely suppressed for the
anti-ferromagnetic interactions in both weakly and strongly interacting
regimes, whereas all three components remain non-vanishing for ferromagnetic
interactions. Specially, when the system is in the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) regime,
obvious Fermi-like distribution emerges for each component. We also discuss the
possible deviation of the spatial distribution from the Fermi-like distribution

Universal parametric correlations in the transmission eigenvalue spectra of disordered conductors
We study the response of the transmission eigenvalue spectrum of disordered
metallic conductors to an arbitrary external perturbation. For systems without
time-reversal symmetry we find an exact non-perturbative solution for the
two-point correlation function, which exhibits a new kind of universal behavior
characteristic of disordered conductors. Systems with orthogonal and symplectic

Exactly solvable potentials of Calogero type for q-deformed Coxeter groups
We establish that by parameterizing the configuration space of a
one-dimensional quantum system by polynomial invariants of q-deformed Coxeter
groups it is possible to construct exactly solvable models of Calogero type. We
adopt the previously introduced notion of solvability which consists of
relating the Hamiltonian to finite dimensional representation spaces of a Lie
algebra. We present explicitly the -case for which we construct the
potentials by means of suitable gauge transformations.Comment: 22 pages Late
RBSC-NVSS Sample. I. Radio and Optical Identifications of a Complete Sample of 1500 Bright X-ray Sources
We cross-identified the ROSAT Bright Source Catalog (RBSC) and the NRAO VLA
Sky Survey (NVSS) to construct the RBSC-NVSS sample of the brightest X-ray
sources (>= 0.1 counts/s or ~1E-12 ergs/cm/cm/s in the 0.1-2.4 keV band) that
are also radio sources (S >= 2.5 mJy at 1.4 GHz) in the 7.8 sr of extragalactic
sky with |b| > 15 degrees. and delta > -40 degrees. The sky density of NVSS
sources is low enough that they can be reliably identified with RBSC sources
having average rms positional uncertainties = 10 arcsec. We used the more
accurate radio positions to make reliable X-ray/radio/optical identifications
down to the POSS plate limits. We obtained optical spectra for many of the
bright identifications lacking published redshifts. The resulting X-ray/radio
sample is unique in its size (N ~ 1500 objects), composition (a mixture of
nearly normal galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, quasars, and clusters), and low
