    Spatial characterization of the magnetic field profile of a probe tip used in magnetic resonance force microscopy

    We have developed the experimental approach to characterize spatial distribution of the magnetic field produced by cantilever tips used in magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM). We performed MRFM measurements on a well characterized diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) film and mapped the 3D field profile produced by a Nd2Fe14B probe tip. Using our technique field profiles of arbitrarily shaped probe magnets can be imaged.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Charge degree of freedom and single-spin fluid model in YBa_2Cu_4O_8

    We present a 17O nuclear magnetic resonance study in the stoichiometric superconductor YBa_2Cu_4O_8. A double irradiation method enables us to show that, below around 180 K, the spin-lattice relaxation rate of plane oxygen is not only driven by magnetic, but also significantly by quadrupolar fluctuations, i.e. low-frequency charge fluctuations. In the superconducting state, on lowering the temperature, the quadrupolar relaxation diminishes faster than the magnetic one. These findings show that, with the opening of the pseudo spin gap, a charge degree of freedom of mainly oxygen character is present in the electronic low-energy excitation spectrum.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, REVTE

    Measurement of the spatial extent of inverse proximity in a Py/Nb/Py superconducting trilayer using low-energy muon-spin rotation

    The authors acknowledge the financial support of the EPSRC (Grant No. EP/J01060X).Muon-spin rotation has been used to observe directly the spatial variation of the magnetic flux density near the ferromagnetic-superconducting interface in a permalloy-niobium trilayer. Above the superconducting transition temperature Tc the profile of the induced magnetic flux density within the niobium layer has been determined. Below Tc there is a significant reduction of the induced flux density, predominantly near the ferromagnetic-superconducting interfaces. We are uniquely able to determine the magnitude and spatial variation of this reduction in induced magnetization due to the presence of the Cooper pairs, yielding the magnitude and length scale associated with this phenomenon. Both are inconsistent with a simple Meissner screening and indicate the existence of another mechanism, the influence of which is localized within the vicinity of the ferromagnetic interface.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    A Sustained Dietary Change Increases Epigenetic Variation in Isogenic Mice

    Epigenetic changes can be induced by adverse environmental exposures, such as nutritional imbalance, but little is known about the nature or extent of these changes. Here we have explored the epigenomic effects of a sustained nutritional change, excess dietary methyl donors, by assessing genomic CpG methylation patterns in isogenic mice exposed for one or six generations. We find stochastic variation in methylation levels at many loci; exposure to methyl donors increases the magnitude of this variation and the number of variable loci. Several gene ontology categories are significantly overrepresented in genes proximal to these methylation-variable loci, suggesting that certain pathways are susceptible to environmental influence on their epigenetic states. Long-term exposure to the diet (six generations) results in a larger number of loci exhibiting epigenetic variability, suggesting that some of the induced changes are heritable. This finding presents the possibility that epigenetic variation within populations can be induced by environmental change, providing a vehicle for disease predisposition and possibly a substrate for natural selection.This work was supported by the Australian Research Council (DP0771859) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (#459412, #635510)

    Selective addressing of high-rank atomic polarization moments

    We describe a method of selective generation and study of polarization moments of up to the highest rank κ=2F\kappa=2F possible for a quantum state with total angular momentum FF. The technique is based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation with frequency-modulated light. Various polarization moments are distinguished by the periodicity of light-polarization rotation induced by the atoms during Larmor precession and exhibit distinct light-intensity and frequency dependences. We apply the method to study polarization moments of 87^{87}Rb atoms contained in a vapor cell with antirelaxation coating. Distinct ultra-narrow (1-Hz wide) resonances, corresponding to different multipoles, appear in the magnetic-field dependence of the optical rotation. The use of the highest-multipole resonances has important applications in quantum and nonlinear optics and in magnetometry.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    Laparoscopic gastric banding

    Introduction: Laparoscopic gastric banding (LGB) is currently the most popular purely restrictive bariatric operation in Europe and many other countries. It has a low operative morbidity, but is associated with a substantial late complication rate. Many late complications have been attributed to technical errors or to the learning curve. The aim of this paper is to present our results with gastric banding after the learning curve in order to disclose the true incidence of long-term complications. Methods: LGB was introduced in our department in December 1995. Thirty patients were operated on until June 1997 using the early banding technique (band within the lesser sac), at which time the surgical technique was slightly modified in order to place the band above the lesser sac. Then another 300 patients underwent LGB using either the Lapband or the SAGB system. This report focuses on the latter patients. All the data were collected prospectively. Results: The series includes 300 patients (257 women and 43 men) with a mean age of 38.3 years (19-64). The mean initial weight was 119.2 kg (57-179), initial body mass index (BMI) was 43.3 kg/m2 (21-64), and initial excess weight was 96.5% (0-191). The mean duration of surgery was 90 min, decreasing over time to a mean of 75 min for the last 50 cases. Early overall morbidity was 6.6%. Major complications occurred in 7 patients (2.3%). Excess weight loss (EWL) was at least 50% in 66% of the patients after 2 years, averaging 60%, with no substantial change until 4 years, and the BMI stabilized between 30 and 31 kg/m2. Forty-nine patients developed a total of 52 long-term complications, of which 23 (7.6%) were related only to the port or catheter. Band erosion occurred in 17 (5.6%), pouch dilatation with slippage in 8 (2.6%), and infection in 4 (1.3%) patients. Fifty-five reoperations were necessary. Twenty-five of these were related only to the port. The band was removed from 26 (9%) patients, of whom 17 were converted to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Conclusions: LGB gives satisfactory results in terms of weight loss in about two-thirds of the patients. Even beyond the learning curve, the long-term morbidity is not negligible, but is acceptable compared to other procedures such as vertical banded gastroplasty. Conversion to gastric bypass is possible when complications occur and can be performed when the band is removed in most case

    I.V. MIDAZOLAM AS AN INDUCTION AGENT FOR ANAESTHESIA: A STUDY IN VOLUNTEERS

    The central nervous and cardiovascular effects of midazolam 0.15 mg kg−1 were studied in 20 healthy, unpremedicated volunteers (10 male and 10 female). No important side-effects were noted and the venous tolerance to midazolam was excellent. Three minutes after injection mean systolic arterial pressure decreased from 121±(SEM) 2 mm Hg to 115±(SEM) 2 mm Hg and diastolic pressure from 78±2 to 70±2 mm Hg (P <0.05), and these effects persisted for at least 20 mm. Heart rate increased from 77±4 beat mm−1 to 90±3 and 88±3 beat mm−1 1 and 3 mm after the injection (P <0.05). Anterograde amnesia (40±3 min duration) and drowsiness (lasting 128±23 mm) were observed in all subjects. Loss of the eyelash reflex and apnoea were observed more often in the male group than in the female subjects. Midazolam 0.15 mg kg−1 was not sufficient to induce anaesthesia reliably in healthy unpretnedicated volunteer
