Instanton Moduli and Topological Soliton Dynamics
It has been proposed by Atiyah and Manton that the dynamics of Skyrmions may
be approximated by motion on a finite dimensional manifold obtained from the
moduli space of SU(2) Yang-Mills instantons. Motivated by this work we describe
how similar results exist for other soliton and instanton systems. We describe
in detail two examples for the approximation of the infinite dimensional
dynamics of sine-Gordon solitons by finite dimensional dynamics on a manifold
obtained from instanton moduli. In the first example we use the moduli space of
CP1 instantons and in the second example we use the moduli space of SU(2)
Yang-Mills instantons. The metric and potential functions on these manifolds
are constructed and the resulting dynamics is compared with the explicit exact

Acid precipitation and its effects on aquatic systems in the English Lake District
There is no evidence of an increase in the acidity (lower pH or alkalinity) of water-bodies in the Lake District over the last 50 years. Brown trout occur in acid streams and upland tarns where pH is 4.5-5.2 throughout the year. Their occurrence in such waters in Britain and Ireland has been known for most of this century and there is no previous evidence of harmful effects on salmonid fisheries, though numbers of fish are naturally low. However, many benthic invertebrates that are common in hill-streams where pH is above 5.7 do not occur in more acid streams. This phenomenon occurs in the headwaters of several western rivers in Cumbria. It is not a recent response to "acid rain". Harmful effects of pH are undoubtedly more pronounced in waters that are poor in other dissolved ions. Low concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride are especially important and may limit the distributions of some aquatic animals even where pH is above 5.7. The concentration of sulphate ions is usually relatively high but this is not important to the fauna; concentrations are at least two times higher in productive alkaline water-bodies than they are in unproductive acid waters
The state of the art: development of the research degree in the UK: part 1
This is the first in a series of two articles which consider the evolution of the research degree from a historical and from a practice-based perspective, which will also consider the Leeds Metropolitan University context. This first paper charts the development of the research degree in the UK, while the second paper (to follow in a future issue of the ALT Journal) considers the implications of these developments, particularly their implications for supervisors, focusing on activities at our own University
Subspecies, morphs and clines in the amphipod Gammarus duebeni from fresh and saline waters
The nature and extent of morphological variation within populations of Gammarus duebeni are examined. The exceptional tolerance of G. duebeni to salinities that encompass three orders of magnitude was known in the 19th Century, and has attracted considerable attention from physiologists and ecologists in the 20th Century, including the likelihood that populations in freshwater are distinct from those living in more saline environments. It is concluded that gradual evolution into discrete and readily distinguished subspecies is currently underway, eventually producing several new species in freshwater and saline habitats
Monopoles from Rational Maps
The moduli space of charge k SU(2) BPS monopoles is diffeomorphic to the
moduli space of degree k rational maps between Riemann spheres. In this note we
describe a numerical algorithm to compute the monopole fields and energy
density from the rational map. The results for some symmetric examples are

Insights from Project FeederWatch: Changes in the abundance and occurrence of birds in New Hampshire over the past 24 years
Changes in the climate and land use over time can lead to changes in the composition of wildlife communities. Using data from Project FeederWatch, we examine trends in the abundance and occurrence of birds documented in the winters from 1988 to 2012 in New Hampshire. Changes in abundance and occurrence are summarized for individual bird species as well as across species based on life history traits. In addition, we examined trends for the state as a whole as well as in subregions. We discuss these changes with regards to the variations of climate and land use that are occurring throughout New Hampshire
Reproduction in Gammarus (Crustacea, Amphipoda): female strategies
This paper attempts to review the literature on Gammarus and examine how it allocates its internal resources when producing eggs. There is an extensive literature on the fecundity of freshwater species but almost nothing is known about the sizes and energy contents of the eggs. More is known for saltwater species, in which the mean number of eggs per brood is inversely proportional to mean egg size and directly proportional to the female's body size. Theoretical aspects of egg size, numbers and reproductive effort are examined, along with the relation between sizes of eggs, broods and female body size. The reproductive effort and breeding cycles of both saltwater and freshwater species are reviewed, and reproductive strategies assessed
