    Enhancing legume ecosystem services through an understanding of plant–pollinator interplay

    Legumes are bee-pollinated, but to a different extent. The importance of the plant– pollinator interplay (PPI), in flowering crops such as legumes lies in a combination of the importance of pollination for the production service and breeding strategies, plus the increasing urgency in mitigating the decline of pollinators through the development and implementation of conservation measures. To realize the full potential of the PPI, a multidisciplinary approach is required. This article assembles an international team of genebank managers, geneticists, plant breeders, experts on environmental governance and agro-ecology, and comprises several sections. The contributions in these sections outline both the state of the art of knowledge in the field and the novel aspects under development, and encompass a range of reviews, opinions and perspectives. The first three sections explore the role of PPI in legume breeding strategies. PPI based approaches to crop improvement can make it possible to adapt and re-design breeding strategies to meet both goals of: (1) optimal productivity, based on an efficient use of pollinators, and (2) biodiversity conservation. The next section deals with entomological aspects and focuses on the protection of the “pest control service” and pollinators in legume crops. The final section addresses general approaches to encourage the synergybetweenfoodproductionandpollinationservicesatfarmerfieldlevel.Twobasic approaches are proposed: (a) Farming with Alternative Pollinators and (b) Crop Design System

    GENETIC DIVERSITY OF FABA BEAN (VICIA FABA L.) POPULATIONS ESTIMATED BY ISOZYMIC AND MOLECULAR MARKERS: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO METHODS

    In our previous studies, the genetic diversity among nine Tunisian faba bean (Vicia faba) populations was analysed using isozymes and sequence-specific amplification polymorphism (SSAP) markers. The objectives of this study were to compare the application and utility of isozymes and sequence-specific amplification polymorphism (SSAP) techniques for analysis of genetic diversity among nine Tunisian faba bean (Vicia faba) populations. A high genetic diversity within populations was detected by both isozymes (SOD, 6-PGD, ME, EST, SKDH, FDH and GDH) and (SSAP) markers (PDR1, Tps19 and Tvf4). For all populations, the genetic diversity revealed by SSAP was more pronounced than that detected with isozyme, based on polymorphic profiles. The analyses of correspondance between the tow methodes based in Mantel test revealed a low correlation ( r=0.177). The low correspondance indicated the absence of correlation and therfore the complimentarit

    Predicting severe pneumonia in the emergency department: a global study of the Pediatric Emergency Research Networks (PERN)—study protocol

    Introduction Pneumonia is a frequent and costly cause of emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalisations in children. There are no evidence-based, validated tools to assist physicians in management and disposition decisions for children presenting to the ED with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). The objective of this study is to develop a clinical prediction model to accurately stratify children with CAP who are at risk for low, moderate and severe disease across a global network of EDs.Methods and analysis This study is a prospective cohort study enrolling up to 4700 children with CAP at EDs at ~80 member sites of the Pediatric Emergency Research Networks (PERN; https://pern-global.com/). We will include children aged 3 months to <14 years with a clinical diagnosis of CAP. We will exclude children with hospital admissions within 7 days prior to the study visit, hospital-acquired pneumonias or chronic complex conditions. Clinical, laboratory and imaging data from the ED visit and hospitalisations within 7 days will be collected. A follow-up telephone or text survey will be completed 7–14 days after the visit. The primary outcome is a three-tier composite of disease severity. Ordinal logistic regression, assuming a partial proportional odds specification, and recursive partitioning will be used to develop the risk stratification models.Ethics and dissemination This study will result in a clinical prediction model to accurately identify risk of severe disease on presentation to the ED. Ethics approval was obtained for all sites included in the study. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Institutional Review Board (IRB) serves as the central IRB for most US sites. Informed consent will be obtained from all participants. Results will be disseminated through international conferences and peer-reviewed publications. This study overcomes limitations of prior pneumonia severity scores by allowing for broad generalisability of findings, which can be actively implemented after model development and validation
