Acoustic communication in the North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis)
Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution September 2003The focus of this thesis is the use of sound for communication by the North
Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis). The surface active group (SAG) is the
predominant social interaction in this species for which use of sound has been
documented. Different group compositions in SAGs indicate that both potentially
reproductive and non-reproductive groups have been combined under one labeL. Sound
production in SAGs suggests that females form and maintain the groups by producing
Scream calls. Males produce Upcalls to advertise their presence as they come into a
group or when the female is on a dive. Males may use Gunshot sounds as threat signals to
other males in the group or potentially as reproductive advertisement signals to the
female. Some calves produce Warble sounds in SAGs. This may be limited to female
calves. This description of acoustic activity in the groups adds to the picture of the SAGs
as complex interactions between individuals, rather than simple groups with only one
whale producing all the sounds to attract other whales to the group. Playback experiments
demonstrate that right whales can use sounds from SAGs to locate the groups. Male right
whales approached both North Atlantic and Southern right whale SAG playbacks. Female
right whales only approached Southern right whale playbacks. Anatomical modeling
resulted in a frequency range of hearing for the right whale (10 Hz - 22 kHz) that is
consistent with the sounds that they produce and overlaps the frequency range of most
anthropogenic noise sources. This combination of research provides a thorough
description how North Atlantic right whales use sound in SAGs and how increasing

Common humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) sound types for passive acoustic monitoring

Passive acoustic monitoring strategies can be used in conservation management, but the first step toward understanding the acoustic behavior of a species is a good description of its acoustic repertoire. Digital acoustic tags (DTAGs) were placed on humpback whales in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to record and describe the non-song sounds being produced in conjunction with foraging activities. Peak frequencies of sounds were generally less than 1 kHz, but ranged as high as 6 kHz, and sounds were generally less than 1 s in duration. Cluster analysis distilled the dataset into eight groups of sounds with similar acoustic properties. The two most stereotyped and distinctive types (“wops” and “grunts”) were also identified aurally as candidates for use in passive acoustic monitoring. This identification of two of the most common sound types will be useful for moving forward conservation efforts on this Northwest Atlantic feeding ground.This paper was funded by the National Oceanic

The Role of the Palliative Care Registered Nurse in the Nursing Facility Setting
There is a growing recognition of significant, unmet palliative care needs in nursing facilities, yet limitations in the workforce limit access to palliative care services. Attention to palliation is particularly important when there are efforts to reduce hospitalizations to help ensure there are no unintended harms associated with treating residents in place. A specialized palliative care registered nurse (PCRN) role was developed as part of the OPTIMISTIC (Optimizing Patient Transfers, Impacting Medical quality, and Improving Symptoms: Transforming Institutional Care) program, a federally funded project to reduce potentially avoidable hospitalizations. Working in collaboration with existing clinical staff and medical providers, the PCRN focuses on managing symptoms, advance care planning, achieving goal concordant care, and promoting quality of life. The PCRN serves as a resource for families through education and support. The PCRN also provides education and mentorship to staff to increase their comfort, knowledge, and skills with end-of-life care. The goals of this article are to provide an overview of the PCRN role and its implementation in nursing facilities and describe core functions that are transferrable to other contexts
Animal-borne tags provide insights into the acoustic communication of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) on the calving grounds

Additional support was provided by Cetacean Society International and VIVA Baleias, golfinhos ecia.This study investigated the repertoire, call-type variability and call rates of southern right whales on a calving ground off Brazil in the western South Atlantic. Acoustic tag data were collected from four lactating females and one juvenile. Pulsive, hybrid, and upcalls showed the greatest variability among call-types with up to 23% of non-standard forms detected. Quiet sounds (grunt, single, and double pulse) were detected for the first time in this species on the calving grounds. Although the sample size was limited, results suggest that social interaction increased call-type diversity and call rates, in line with other acoustic studies on right whales.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Measuring acoustic habitats
Many organisms depend on sound for communication, predator/prey detection and navigation. The acoustic environment can therefore play an important role in ecosystem dynamics and evolution. A growing number of studies are documenting acoustic habitats and their influences on animal development, behaviour, physiology and spatial ecology, which has led to increasing demand for passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) expertise in the life sciences. However, as yet, there has been no synthesis of data processing methods for acoustic habitat monitoring, which presents an unnecessary obstacle to would-be PAM analysts. Here, we review the signal processing techniques needed to produce calibrated measurements of terrestrial and aquatic acoustic habitats. We include a supplemental tutorial and template computer codes in matlab and r, which give detailed guidance on how to produce calibrated spectrograms and statistical analyses of sound levels. Key metrics and terminology for the characterisation of biotic, abiotic and anthropogenic sound are covered, and their application to relevant monitoring scenarios is illustrated through example data sets. To inform study design and hardware selection, we also include an up-to-date overview of terrestrial and aquatic PAM instruments. Monitoring of acoustic habitats at large spatiotemporal scales is becoming possible through recent advances in PAM technology. This will enhance our understanding of the role of sound in the spatial ecology of acoustically sensitive species and inform spatial planning to mitigate the rising influence of anthropogenic noise in these ecosystems. As we demonstrate in this work, progress in these areas will depend upon the application of consistent and appropriate PAM methodologies

Evidence for acoustic communication among bottom foraging humpback whales
Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), a mysticete with a cosmopolitan distribution, demonstrate
marked behavioural plasticity. Recent studies show evidence of social learning in the transmission of specific
population level traits ranging from complex singing to stereotyped prey capturing behaviour. Humpback
whales have been observed to employ group foraging techniques, however details on how individuals
coordinate behaviour in these groups is challenging to obtain. This study investigates the role of a novel
broadband patterned pulsed sound produced by humpback whales engaged in bottom-feeding behaviours,
referred to here as a ‘paired burst’ sound. Data collected from 56 archival acoustic tag deployments were
investigated to determine the functional significance of these signals. Paired burst sound production was
associated exclusively with bottom feeding under low-light conditions, predominantly with evidence of
associated conspecifics nearby suggesting that the sound likely serves either as a communicative signal to
conspecifics, a signal to affect prey behaviour, or possibly both. This study provides additional evidence for
individual variation and phenotypic plasticity of foraging behaviours in humpback whales and provides
important evidence for the use of acoustic signals among foraging individuals in this species
Energetic and physical limitations on the breaching performance of large whales
The considerable power needed for large whales to leap out of the water may represent the single most expensive burst maneuver found in nature. However, the mechanics and energetic costs associated with the breaching behaviors of large whales remain poorly understood. In this study we deployed whale-borne tags to measure the kinematics of breaching to test the hypothesis that these spectacular aerial displays are metabolically expensive. We found that breaching whales use variable underwater trajectories, and that high-emergence breaches are faster and require more energy than predatory lunges. The most expensive breaches approach the upper limits of vertebrate muscle performance, and the energetic cost of breaching is high enough that repeated breaching events may serve as honest signaling of body condition. Furthermore, the confluence of muscle contractile properties, hydrodynamics, and the high speeds required likely impose an upper limit to the body size and effectiveness of breaching whales
'To live and die [for] Dixie': Irish civilians and the Confederate States of America
Around 20,000 Irishmen served in the Confederate army in the Civil War. As a result, they left behind, in various Southern towns and cities, large numbers of friends, family, and community leaders. As with native-born Confederates, Irish civilian support was crucial to Irish participation in the Confederate military effort. Also, Irish civilians served in various supporting roles: in factories and hospitals, on railroads and diplomatic missions, and as boosters for the cause. They also, however, suffered in bombardments, sieges, and the blockade. Usually poorer than their native neighbours, they could not afford to become 'refugees' and move away from the centres of conflict. This essay, based on research from manuscript collections, contemporary newspapers, British Consular records, and Federal military records, will examine the role of Irish civilians in the Confederacy, and assess the role this activity had on their integration into Southern communities. It will also look at Irish civilians in the defeat of the Confederacy, particularly when they came under Union occupation. Initial research shows that Irish civilians were not as upset as other whites in the South about Union victory. They welcomed a return to normalcy, and often 'collaborated' with Union authorities. Also, Irish desertion rates in the Confederate army were particularly high, and I will attempt to gauge whether Irish civilians played a role in this. All of the research in this paper will thus be put in the context of the Drew Gilpin Faust/Gary Gallagher debate on the influence of the Confederate homefront on military performance. By studying the Irish civilian experience one can assess how strong the Confederate national experiment was. Was it a nation without a nationalism
