    THE IMPLEMENTATION OF RIDDLE GAME TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY

    This research is to prove whether the implementation of the Riddle Game Technique can be useful in improving vocabulary mastery of the grade eight students at SMP Negeri 1 Sindue or not. This research applied a quasi-experimental research design. In selecting the sample, the researcher applied a cluster random sampling strategy. The samples of this research were VIII Patimura as the experimental group and VIII Sudirman as the control group. The researcher used a test, as the main instrument to collect the data consisting of pre-test and post-test. The result of data analysis for the experimental group indicated that the mean score of the pre-test was 49.75, while the mean score of the post-test was 80.86. Meanwhile, the mean score of the pre-test of the control group was 51.61, and the post-test mean score was 63.95. Based on the result of both groups, the researcher found that the t-counted value was 8.73. Applying the degree of freedom (df) 52 and 0.05 level of significance found that the value of t-table was 2.0084. The data indicates that t-counted is higher than the t-table. It means that the hypothesis of this research is accepted. Thus, the implementation of the Riddle Game Technique can improve vocabulary mastery of grade eight students at SMP Negeri 1 Sindue.Keywords : Improve, Vocabulary Mastery, Riddle Game Technique AbstrakPenelitian ini untuk membuktikan apakah penerapan teknik Riddle Game dapat membantu dalam meningkatkan penguasaan kosa kata siswa kelas delapan di SMP Negeri 1 Sindue atau tidak. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian quasi-eksperiment. Dalam memilih sampel, peneliti menerapkan strategi cluster random sampling. Sampel penelitian ini adalah VIII Patimura sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan VIII Sudirman sebagai kelompok kontrol. Peneliti menggunakan tes sebagai instrumen utama untuk mengumpulkan data yang terdiri dari pre-test dan post-test. Hasil analisis data untuk kelompok eksperimen menunjukkan bahwa skor rata-rata dari pre-tes adalah 49.75 sedangkan skor rata-rata dari post-tes adalah 80.86. Sementara itu, nilai rata-rata pretest dari kelompok control adalah 51.61 dan skor rata-rata post-tes adalah 63.95. Berdasarkan hasil dari kedua kelompok, peneliti menemukan bahwa nilai t-counted adalah 8.73. Menerapkan derajat kebebasan (df) 52 dan tingkat signifikansi 0.05 ditemukan bahwa nilai t-tabel adalah 2.0084. Data menunjukkan bahwa t-counted lebih tinggi dari t-tabel. Artinya hipotesis penelitian ini diterima. Dengan demikian, penerapan Teknik Riddle Game dapat meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas delapan di SMP Negeri 1 Sindue.Kata kunci : Meningkatkan, Penguasaan Kosakata, Teknik Riddle Game

    The Implementation of Picture Series Technique to Improve Writing Skill

    The objective of this research is to find out whether the implementation of Picture Series technique is effective in teaching mechanics writing to eight grade students of SMP N 6 Palu or not. This research applied quasi-experimental research design with pre-test and post-test. The research population was the eighth grade students of SMP N 6 Palu. The sample of this research were class VIIIE as experimental class that consisted of 29 students and class VIIIB as control class that consisted of 27 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used test. The test was used twice as pre-test and post-test. Then, the data were analyzed statistically. After analyzing data, it was revealed that there were different score obtained from control group and experimental group. In other words, t-counted (3.47) was higher than t-table (1.67). It means that the result indicates that the Picture Series technique can be used to improve writing skill of eight grade students of SMP N 6 Palu. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIIIE sebagai kelas experimental yang terdiri dari 29 siswa dan kelas VIIIB sebagai kelas kontrol yang terdiri dari 27 siswa. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan tes. Tes digunakan dua kali pada saat tes awal dan tes akhir. Kemudian, data diolah secara statistik. Setelah data diolah, ditemukan bahwa terdapat perbedaan skor yang diperoleh dari kelompok kontrol dan kelompok eksperimental. Dengan kata lain, t-hitung (3.47) lebih tinggi dari t-tabel (1.67). Ini berarti bahwa, hasil tersebut mengindikasikan bahwa teknik Picture Series dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa delapan SMP N 6 Palu.Kata kunci: picture series, writing mechanics, narrative text                                  

    THE USE OF BUZZ GROUP TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION

    The objective of the research is to prove that the use of Buzz Group Technique is effective in improving students’ ability in reading comprehension of Descriptive text of the Seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Toribulu. This research used a quasi-experimental research design which involved experimental group and control groups. The research samples VII A as the experimental group with 30 students and VII B as the control one with 30 students selected by using lottery. The data of the research were collected through pre-test and post-test. The mean score of experimental group on pre-test is 46.5, while that of the control one is 63. The mean score of experimental group on post-test is 89,33, while of the control one is 84,83 by using the 0.05 level of significance and 60 degree of freedom, it was discovered that the  value of the t-counted (5,57) is higher than the t-table (1.567). It means that the hyphothesis is accepted. In other words, the use of Buzz Group Technique is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension in Descriptive text of the seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Toribulu. Key words: Improving Reading Comprehension, Buzz Group Technique, Descriptive TextTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk membuktikan bahwa penggunaan kelompok dengung efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa kelas tujuh dalam pemahaman membaca teks deskripsi di SMP Negeri 1 Toribulu. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain quasi-eksperimental yang melibatkan dua kelompok siswa sebagai kelompok eksperimental dan kelompok kontrol. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah kelas VII A sebagai kelompok eksperimental dengan 30 siswa dan VII B sebagai kelompok kontrol dengan 30 siswa. Sampel dari penelitian ini dipilih dengan teknik lotre.  Penelitian ini dikumpulkan data dengan melalui pre-test dan post-test. Nilai rata-rata yang di peroleh kelompok eksperimen di pre-test adalah 46,50 sedangkan kelompok kontrol memperoleh nilai 63. Nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh kelompok eksperimen di post-test adalah 89.33 sedangkan kelompok kontrol memperoleh 84.33. Dengan menggunakan tingkatan signifikan 0.05 dan 60 derajat kebebasan, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai t-hitung (5.57) lebih tinggi dari t-tabel (1.567). Hal ini dapat diartikan bahwa hipotesis penelitian ini di terima. Dengan kata lain bahwa penggunaan kelompok dengung efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa kelas tujuh dalam pemahaman membaca teks deskriptifdi SMP Negeri 1 Toribulu.Kata kunci: Meningkatkan Pemahaman Membaca, Carita Rakyat, Teks Naratif, Teks Deskripti

    Developing Web-based English Instructional Material Oriented to Promote Independent Learning at Indonesian University Context

    The objective of this research is to develop web-based English instructional materials which enable to promote students’ independent learning at university context. To comprehend this objective, the researcher employs R & D (Research and Development) design by mixing quantitative and qualitative methods. This research is conducted at Faculty of Engineering Tadulako University. The subjects of the study are the lecturers who teach English for the general course and the students of faculty of Engineering. Subject matter experts were also involved to validate the product. The data were collected through semi-structured interview; study the related documents and the results of questionnaire distribution. The data in these phases were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. In reference to data analysis, five findings are documented as explored in this part of the article. In summary, the development of web-based English instructional materials oriented to promote independent learning is effective and responded positively both lecturers and students. With the various supported activities and along with the flexible learning atmosphere and methods of delivery, the web-based English instructional materials are effective to promote students’ independent learning

    Differences On Students’ Learning Outcomes With High And Low Achievement Motivation

    This research aims to examine the difference of students’ learning outcomes as an effect of achievement motivation in writing an English Essay through film-assisted inquiry-based learning method. It was a quasi-experimental research non-equivalent control group design which implemented into two different parallel classes. They are experimental group and control group, in which seventy two students were accepted as subject surveyed through cluster random sampling technique. Data of students’ learning outcomes collected through pre-test and post-test. While data of students’ achievement motivation level collected through questionnaire. The data of pre-test was taken before treatment, used to determine students’ variance, whereas post-test data was taken after treatment entirely finished to examine students’ learning outcomes differences. Data analysis using SPSS 22 with ANOVA Factorial 2x2 (two- way ANOVA. The hypothesis testing was conducted in 5% of significance level. The result of data analysis indicates that the p-value of t-counted is 0.000 lower than 0.05(˂0.05). It can be interpreted that there is a significant difference of learning outcomes between the students who have a high achievement motivation and those who have low one in writing an English essay through film-assisted inquiry-based learning method. Moreover, the students with high achievement motivation have better achievement than the students with low achievement motivation

    Peningkatan Keterampilan Membaca Melalui Flipped Classroom Model

    Perkembangan tekhnologi yang pesat diberbagai sektor termasuk sektor pendidikan menuntut kreativitas pendidik dalam merancang model pembelajaran. Penelitian tindakan kelas ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis (1) desain perencanaan pembelajaran keterampilan membaca bahasa Inggris melalui pembelajaran Model Flipped Classroom (2) pelaksanaan pembelajaran keterampilan membaca bahasa Inggris melalui pembelajaran Model Flipped Classroom  dan (3) peningkatan keterampilan membaca bahasa Inggris melalui pembelajaran Model Flipped Classroom. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah Penelitian Tindakan kelas (Classroom Action Research) yang dilaksanakan dalam tiga siklus. Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester I Kelas D program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah lembar penilaian, observasi, dan tes. Analisis data yang digunakan adalah analisis deskripsi. Pada siklus I topik yang dibahas adalah teks tentang using context clue dengan  bacaan Who Discovered America, siklus II Analyzing Multiple Meaning, dan siklus III tentang Recognising Signal Words

    THE CORRELATION BETWEEN GRAMMAR AND SPEAKING SKILL OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

    This research aims to find out correlation between grammar and speaking skill of the third semester students of English Education Study Program academic year 2019/2020 at IAIN Datokarama Palu. 28 participants of correlational research were asked to describe themselves, daily routines, and unforgettable experience. Then, they were assigned to do grammar test. The data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The result shows that the correlation coefficient between students’ grammar and speaking skill is 0.46. The result is categorized “moderate” (0.40 to 0.59). It indicates that there is positive correlation between the students’ grammar and speaking skill which means that grammar contributes to speaking skilll, but grammar is not the main predictor of speaking skill achievement. There are some other aspects of speaking affecting the students’ speaking skill, i.e accuracy (in terms of vocabulary and pronunciation), fluency, and comprehensibility. The implication of this finding to the teaching of speaking skill is that the lecturers need to integrate the teaching of speaking skill with grammar and other supporting aspects, like vocabulary and pronunciation

    Perspektif Siswa terhadap Penggunaan Google Classroom sebagai Media Pembelajaran

    This research intends to analyze the student’s perspective of the use of Google Classroom as an instructional medium. The research is descriptive qualitative. This research was conducted at SMA Karuna Dipa Palu. The participants of this research were a total of 20 students in the science and social class of the 2020/2021 academic year. They were selected by using the purposive sampling technique. The data collection employed triangulation by using semi-structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings of the research revealed that the students’ perceptions on the implementation of Google Classroom as an instructional medium are acceptable. Google Classroom helps the students to be productive and facilitates the teaching and learning process during the Covid-19 pandemic. There two obstacles faced by students during the implementation of Google Classroom are the internet connection and electricity instability. Even though the students faced some obstacles during the implementation of Google Classroom, the students perceived that Google Classroom is beneficial and effective for instructional medium
