    Intima-Media Thickness: Setting a Standard for a Completely Automated Method of Ultrasound Measurement

    The intima - media thickness (IMT) of the common carotid artery is a widely used clinical marker of severe cardiovascular diseases. IMT is usually manually measured on longitudinal B-Mode ultrasound images. Many computer-based techniques for IMT measurement have been proposed to overcome the limits of manual segmentation. Most of these, however, require a certain degree of user interaction. In this paper we describe a new completely automated layers extraction (CALEXia) technique for the segmentation and IMT measurement of carotid wall in ultrasound images. CALEXia is based on an integrated approach consisting of feature extraction, line fitting, and classification that enables the automated tracing of the carotid adventitial walls. IMT is then measured by relying on a fuzzy K-means classifier. We tested CALEXia on a database of 200 images. We compared CALEXia performances to those of a previously developed methodology that was based on signal analysis (CULEXsa). Three trained operators manually segmented the images and the average profiles were considered as the ground truth. The average error from CALEXia for lumen - intima (LI) and media - adventitia (MA) interface tracings were 1.46 ± 1.51 pixel (0.091 ± 0.093 mm) and 0.40 ± 0.87 pixel (0.025 ± 0.055 mm), respectively. The corresponding errors for CULEXsa were 0.55 ± 0.51 pixels (0.035 ± 0.032 mm) and 0.59 ± 0.46 pixels (0.037 ± 0.029 mm). The IMT measurement error was equal to 0.87 ± 0.56 pixel (0.054 ± 0.035 mm) for CALEXia and 0.12 ± 0.14 pixel (0.01 ± 0.01 mm) for CULEXsa. Thus, CALEXia showed limited performance in segmenting the LI interface, but outperformed CULEXsa in the MA interface and in the number of images correctly processed (10 for CALEXia and 16 for CULEXsa). Based on two complementary strategies, we anticipate fusing them for further IMT improvement

    Learning in the Repeated Secretary Problem

    In the classical secretary problem, one attempts to find the maximum of an unknown and unlearnable distribution through sequential search. In many real-world searches, however, distributions are not entirely unknown and can be learned through experience. To investigate learning in such a repeated secretary problem we conduct a large-scale behavioral experiment in which people search repeatedly from fixed distributions. In contrast to prior investigations that find no evidence for learning in the classical scenario, in the repeated setting we observe substantial learning resulting in near-optimal stopping behavior. We conduct a Bayesian comparison of multiple behavioral models which shows that participants' behavior is best described by a class of threshold-based models that contains the theoretically optimal strategy. Fitting such a threshold-based model to data reveals players' estimated thresholds to be surprisingly close to the optimal thresholds after only a small number of games

    Smooth Inequalities and Equilibrium Inefficiency in Scheduling Games

    We study coordination mechanisms for Scheduling Games (with unrelated machines). In these games, each job represents a player, who needs to choose a machine for its execution, and intends to complete earliest possible. Our goal is to design scheduling policies that always admit a pure Nash equilibrium and guarantee a small price of anarchy for the l_k-norm social cost --- the objective balances overall quality of service and fairness. We consider policies with different amount of knowledge about jobs: non-clairvoyant, strongly-local and local. The analysis relies on the smooth argument together with adequate inequalities, called smooth inequalities. With this unified framework, we are able to prove the following results. First, we study the inefficiency in l_k-norm social costs of a strongly-local policy SPT and a non-clairvoyant policy EQUI. We show that the price of anarchy of policy SPT is O(k). We also prove a lower bound of Omega(k/log k) for all deterministic, non-preemptive, strongly-local and non-waiting policies (non-waiting policies produce schedules without idle times). These results ensure that SPT is close to optimal with respect to the class of l_k-norm social costs. Moreover, we prove that the non-clairvoyant policy EQUI has price of anarchy O(2^k). Second, we consider the makespan (l_infty-norm) social cost by making connection within the l_k-norm functions. We revisit some local policies and provide simpler, unified proofs from the framework's point of view. With the highlight of the approach, we derive a local policy Balance. This policy guarantees a price of anarchy of O(log m), which makes it the currently best known policy among the anonymous local policies that always admit a pure Nash equilibrium.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur

    A Four Slot Dual Feed and Dual Band Reconfigurable Antenna for Fixed Satellite Service Applications

    A dual feed and dual-band reconfigurable antenna is designed, analyzed, and prototyped in this work for fixed satellite service communication applications. The designed model occupies the compact dimension of 24X21X1.2 mm on FR4 substrate and provides an input impedance of 50 ohms at both ports. The proposed model offers additional circular polarization characteristics at both the resonating bands. The PIN diode-based switching conditions, and the frequency reconfigurability analysis in both simulation and measurement are almost match. The combination of dual-band resonance, frequency reconfigurable nature, and compact dimension makes this model an attractive candidate in the specified field with considerable gain (8.5 dB) and efficiency (80%)

    Bilateral temporal spinous projections overshadowing the sphenoidal spines: an anatomical and radiological evaluation

    The infratemporal fossa has traditionally been described as a post-maxillary space, which is open below, to the rear and laterally. The most reliable osseous landmarks of the infratemporal and parapharyngeal spaces are the pterygoid and styloid processes and the sphenoidal spine. In the present study the skull exhibited the normal sphenoidal spines along with a prominent spinous projection emanating bilaterally from the tympanic plate of the temporal bone. The objective of the present paper is to report an anatomical and radiological evaluation of the sphenoidal spines coexistent with bilateral temporal spinous projections. Additionally, the topographical relationship of this osseous variation is discussed with particular reference to neurovascular structures. Unduly prominent temporal spinous projections may cause obstruction, thus reducing the operative field. The anatomical variations relating to bony and vascular structures in this region are of paramount importance to neurosurgeons and otorhinolaryngologists

The problem of this research is how the attitude and adolescent motivation in following traditional artistry of kuda lumping in Pesawaran. The method of this research is descriptive. Data collecting technique use question form, interview, observation and documentation. The sample of this research amount 54 respondents. Based on the result of research which have been done, it can be seen that adolescent behave neutral to traditional artistry of kuda lumping and have good enough motivation in following traditional artistry of kuda lumping.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan dan mendeskripsikan sikap dan motivasi remaja terhadap kesenian tradisional kuda lumping di Pesawaran. Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimanakah sikap dan motivasi remaja terhadap kesenian tradisional kuda lumping di Pesawaran. Metode penelitian ini adalah deskriptif. Teknik pengumpulan data mengggunakan angket, wawancara, observasi dan dokumentasi. Sampel dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 54 responden. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang telah dilakukan bahwa remaja bersikap netral terhadap kesenian tradisional kuda lumping dan memiliki motivasi yang cukup baik dalam mengikuti kesenian tradisional kuda lumping

    CT attenuation analysis of carotid intraplaque hemorrhage

    Background and Purpose: Intraplaque hemorrhage is considered a leading parameter of carotid plaque vulnerability. Our purpose was to assess the CT characteristics of intraplaque hemorrhage with histopathologic correlation to identify features that allow for confirming or ruling out the intraplaque hemorrhage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 91 patients (67 men; median age, 657 years; age range, 41-83 years) who underwent CT angiography and carotid endarterectomy from March 2010 to May 2013. Histopathologic analysis was performed for the tissue characterization and identification of intraplaque hemorrhage. Two observers assessed the plaque's attenuation values by using an ROI (≤1 and ≥2 mm2). Receiver operating characteristic curve, Mann-Whitney, and Wilcoxon analyses were performed. RESULTS: A total of 169 slices were assessed (59 intraplaque hemorrhage, 63 lipid-rich necrotic core, and 47 fibrous); the average values of the intraplaque hemorrhage, lipid-rich necrotic core, and fibrous tissue were 17.475 Hounsfield units (HU) and 18.407 HU, 39.476 HU and 48.048 HU, and 91.66 HU and 93.128 HU, respectively, before and after the administration of contrast medium. The Mann-Whitney test showed a statistically significant difference of HU values both in basal and after the administration of contrast material phase. Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed a statistical association between intraplaque hemorrhage and low HU values, and a threshold of 25 HU demonstrated the presence of intraplaque hemorrhage with a sensitivity and specificity of 93.22% and 92.73%, respectively. The Wilcoxon test showed that the attenuation of the plaque before and after administration of contrast material is different (intraplaque hemorrhage, lipid-rich necrotic core, and fibrous tissue had P values of .006, .0001, and .018, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this preliminary study suggest that CT can be used to identify the presence of intraplaque hemorrhage according to the attenuation. A threshold of 25 HU in the volume acquired after the administration of contrast medium is associated with an optimal sensitivity and specificity. Special care should be given to the correct identification of the ROI

    A novel bacterial isolate Stenotrophomonas maltophilia as living factory for synthesis of gold nanoparticles

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The synthesis of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) has received considerable attention with their potential applications in various life sciences related applications. Recently, there has been tremendous excitement in the study of nanoparticles synthesis by using some natural biological system, which has led to the development of various biomimetic approaches for the growth of advanced nanomaterials. In the present study, we have demonstrated the synthesis of gold nanoparticles by a novel bacterial strain isolated from a site near the famous gold mines in India. A promising mechanism for the biosynthesis of GNPs by this strain and their stabilization via charge capping was investigated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A bacterial isolate capable of gold nanoparticle synthesis was isolated and identified as a novel strain of <it>Stenotrophomonas malophilia </it>(AuRed02) based on its morphology and an analysis of its 16S rDNA gene sequence. After 8 hrs of incubation, monodisperse preparation of gold nanoparticles was obtained. Gold nanoparticles were characterized and found to be of ~40 nm size. Electrophoresis, Zeta potential and FTIR measurements confirmed that the particles are capped with negatively charged phosphate groups from NADP rendering them stable in aqueous medium.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The process of synthesis of well-dispersed nanoparticles using a novel microorganism isolated from the gold enriched soil sample has been reported in this study, leading to the development of an easy bioprocess for synthesis of GNPs. This is the first study in which an extensive characterization of the indigenous bacterium isolated from the actual gold enriched soil was conducted. Promising mechanism for the biosynthesis of GNPs by the strain and their stabilization via charge capping is suggested, which involves an NADPH-dependent reductase enzyme that reduces Au<sup>3+ </sup>to Au<sup>0 </sup>through electron shuttle enzymatic metal reduction process.</p

    Hypothesis Validation of Far-Wall Brightness in Carotid-Artery Ultrasound for Feature-Based IMT Measurement Using a Combination of Level-Set Segmentation and Registration

    Intima-media thickness (IMT) is now being considered as an indicator of atherosclerosis. Our group has developed several feature-based IMT measurement algorithms such as the Completely Automated Layer EXtraction (CALEX) (which is a class of patented AtheroEdge Systems from Global Biomedical Technologies, Inc., CA, USA). These methods are based on the hypothesis that the highest pixel intensities are in the far wall of the common carotid artery (CCA) or the internal carotid artery (ICA). In this paper, we verify that this hypothesis holds true for B-mode longitudinal ultrasound (US) images of the carotid wall. This patented methodology consists of generating the composite image (the arithmetic sum of images) from the database by first registering the carotid image frames with respect to a nearly straight carotid-artery frame from the same database using: 1) B-spline-based nonrigid registration and 2) affine registration. Prior to registration, we segment the carotid-artery lumen using a level-set-based algorithm followed by morphological image processing. The binary lumen images are registered, and the transformations are applied to the original grayscale CCA images. We evaluated our technique using a database of 200 common carotid images of normal and pathologic carotids. The composite image presented the highest intensity distribution in the far wall of the CCA/ICA, validating our hypothesis. We have also demonstrated the accuracy and improvement in the IMT segmentation result with our CALEX 3.0 system. The CALEX system, when run on newly acquired US images, shows the IMT error of about 30 mu m. Thus, we have shown that the CALEX algorithm is able to exploit the far-wall brightness for accurate IMT measurements
