    Network quantum steering

    The development of large-scale quantum networks promises to bring a multitude of technological applications as well as shed light on foundational topics, such as quantum nonlocality. It is particularly interesting to consider scenarios where sources within the network are statistically independent, which leads to so-called network nonlocality, even when parties perform fixed measurements. Here we promote certain parties to be trusted and introduce the notion of network steering and network local hidden state (NLHS) models within this paradigm of independent sources. In one direction, we show how results from Bell nonlocality and quantum steering can be used to demonstrate network steering. We further show that it is a genuinely novel effect, by exhibiting unsteerable states that nevertheless demonstrate network steering, based upon entanglement swapping, yielding a form of activation. On the other hand, we provide no-go results for network steering in a large class of scenarios, by explicitly constructing NLHS models.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    The burden of breast, cervical, and colon and rectum cancer in the Balkan countries, 1990–2019 and forecast to 2030.

    Background Despite effective prevention and control strategies, in countries of the Balkan region, cancers are the second leading cause of mortality, closely following circulatory system diseases. Objective To describe trends in the burden of breast, cervical, and colon and rectum cancer in the Balkan region and per country between 1990 and 2019, including a forecast to 2030. Methods We described the 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimates for breast, cervical, and colon and rectum cancers in eleven Balkan countries over the period 1990–2019, including incidence, years lived with disability (YLD), years of life lost (YLL), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rates per 100,000 population and accompanied 95% uncertainty interval. With the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average, we forecasted these rates per country up to 2030. Results In the Balkan region, the highest incidence and DALYs rates in the study period were for colon and rectum, and breast cancers. Over the study period, the DALYs rates for breast cancer per 100,000 population were the highest in Serbia (reaching 670.84 in 2019) but the lowest in Albania (reaching 271.24 in 2019). In 2019, the highest incidence of breast cancer (85 /100,000) and highest YLD rate (64 /100,000) were observed in Greece. Romania had the highest incidence rates, YLD rates, DALY rates, and YLL rates of cervical cancer, with respective 20.59%, 23.39% 4.00%, and 3.47% increases for the 1990/2019 period, and the highest forecasted burden for cervical cancer in 2030. The highest incidence rates, YLD rates and DALY rates of colon and rectum cancers were continuously recorded in Croatia (an increase of 130.75%, 48.23%, and 63.28%, respectively), while the highest YLL rates were in Bulgaria (an increase of 63.85%). The YLL rates due to colon and rectum cancers are forecasted to progress by 2030 in all Balkan countries. Conclusion As most of the DALYs burden for breast, cervical, and colon and rectum cancer is due to premature mortality, the numerous country-specific barriers to cancer early detection and quality and care continuum should be a public priority of multi-stakeholder collaboration in the Balkan region

    Vitamin D receptor gene variants contribute to hip and knee osteoarthritis susceptibility

    Vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms could play a significant role in the susceptibility and patho-genesis of osteoarthritis (OA), the most common degenerative joint disorder in humans. The current study involved 94 OA patients and 100 healthy, asymptomatic controls. VDR variants FokI (rs2228570), TaqI (rs731236), ApaI (rs7975232) and EcoRV (rs4516035) were genotyped using TaqMan-based real-time PCR. Adjusted odds ratio (OR) analysis showed that VDR TaqI and FokI polymorphisms are significantly associated with susceptibility to OA (OR=1.986, P=0.001 and OR=1.561, P=0.017, respectively). Joint-specific analysis showed that the VDR TaqI polymorphism was associated with risk of hip OA (OR=1.930, P=0.005) and knee OA (OR=1.916, P=0.028), while the VDR FokI polymorphism was associated with higher risk of knee OA (OR=2.117, P=0.012). VDR TaqI and FokI polymorphisms are associated with the occurrence of persistent pain (P=0.005 and P=0.027, respectively), while ApaI was associated with a family history of OA (p=0.004). The VDR FokI and TaqI genetic variants significantly contribute to osteoarthritis susceptibility, the occurrence of persistent pain, and potentially to joint-specific OA risk

    Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the Serbian versions of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and the Study Burnout Inventory (SBI) among fifth-year medical students at 5 universities in Serbia. Material and Methods: The study included 573 fifth-year medical students at 5 universities in Serbia. The research instrument consisted of SBI and CBI. The reliability of these instruments was assessed using an internal consistency measure (Cronbach's α), an intra-class coefficient (ICC) and factor analysis. Results: Cronbach's α for SBI was 0.83, including for exhaustion 0.73, for cynicism 0.70, and for inadequacy 0.48. The test-retest reliability (ICC) was 0.75. Cronbach's α for personal burnout on CBI was 0.89, for the faculty-related burnout 0.86, and for the faculty-members-related burnout 0.92. Cronbach's α for CBI was 0.93. The factor analysis for SBI showed 2 factors and for CBI 3 factors. Conclusions: This study revealed that the Serbian versions of both SBI and CBI could be used for the assessment of burnout in this population

    Mediterranean Sea level and barotropic flow through the Strait of Gibraltar for the period 1958-2001 and reconstructed since 1659

    Sea level values from a two-dimensional model of the Mediterranean Sea forced by atmospheric pressure and wind are used to estimate the barotropic flow through the Strait of Gibraltar for the period 1958–2001. The Mediterranean mean sea level derived from the model ranges between ±20 cm with a standard deviation of 5.5 cm and is correlated to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index. Thus NAO historical data and reconstructions are used to derive the Mediterranean Sea level variability from 1659 until 2001. The accuracy of the reconstruction is estimated in 2.7 cm for monthly mean values, 0.41 cm for annual mean values, and 0.22 cm for decadal mean values (0.48 cm for decadal winter mean sea level). The barotropic flow through the strait is computed from the model output as the time derivative of the total volume of the basin. During the period 1958–2001 the estimated daily flow ranges between ±2.7 Sv, with a standard deviation of 0.56 Sv. The dominant periodicities are in between 1 and 2 weeks. At these scales the model successfully reproduces previously published flow estimates based on current meter observations, which confirms that atmospheric pressure and wind dominate the intraseasonal variability of the flow. For the annual cycle the variability of the atmospherically induced flow is similar to the variability of the flow induced by the evaporation-precipitation (E-P) budget (±0.025 Sv), though absolute values of the first are about a third of the latter. At longer timescales the atmospheric contribution is much smaller than the E-P induced flow
