Translators are often most visible when they deviate from the norms and expectations of the receiving culture. In this article, I examine how the most recent Finnish translations of H. P. Lovecraft make the translator visible both on a textual and paratextual level, especially via translator’s notes and prefaces, by challenging the expectations and norms of contemporary Finnish literary translations. This article uses the most recent Finnish Lovecraft translations from 2021 and 2022 as a case study of the translator’s visibility. The translation deviates from common expectations of Finnish literary translations and may be seen as more in line with practices and norms of fan translation

Increasing translation awareness: A course designed for PhD researchers

Multilingualism is so deeply embedded in researchers’ everyday work that they may not fully acknowledge how big a role translation plays in it. In this article, we examine PhD researchers’ views on research translation through the concept of translation awareness. We demonstrate how PhD researchers as paraprofessional translators see the role of translation in their research projects and what specific translation challenges they encounter. We also examine how taking part in a course on translating research material influences their views. This article aims to continue and expand discussion on the concept of translation awareness.Multilingualism is so deeply embedded in researchers’ everyday work that they may not fully acknowledge how big a role translation plays in it. The purpose of this thesis was to discover the reasons behind the detachment of the zinc product label and to invent a solution to remedy the issue. The research was commissioned by Boliden Kokkola Ltd. The product stickers have long been a part of the product distribution and the overall good quality of the stickers has helped the customers to manage their zinc stock. The thesis concentrated on investigating the elements that have an impact on the establishment a good glue bond and further on to the elements that possibly undermine it. First it was discovered that stocking of the zinc outdoors caused a possibte issue with the glue attachment due to condensation. It was also discovered that the overflow zinc was the main reason why the glue bond failed. The research discovered the major causes why the glue bond did not hold until product delivery to the customer. The solution was to design a mechanical applicator which applies more pressure to the sticker while the glue is still hardening. This would also resolve the issue with the overflow zinc as the pressure would be applied to the whole surface area of the sticker enabling the sticker to adapt to the surface profile with enhanced bond
