BackgroundStroke and myocardial infarction (MI) are medical emergencies, and early treatment within the golden hour is crucial for good prognosis. Adequate knowledge about the warning symptoms can shorten the onset-to-door time. Various factors affect the level of awareness, including social activity. This study aimed to determine if engaging in social activity is associated with the awareness of the warning symptoms of stroke and MI.MethodsThis cross-sectional study analyzed 451,793 participants from the 2017 and 2019 Korea Community Health Survey. Based on five questions for each of stroke and MI symptoms, participants were divided into an awareness group (replied β€œYes” to all five questions) and unawareness group. Engagement in social activities (i.e., religious, friendship, leisure, and volunteer activity) was evaluated through a questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the relation between social activity and awareness of warning symptoms.ResultsOverall, 52.6% participants were aware of the warning symptoms of stroke, and 45.8% of MI. Regular engagement in at least one social activity, particularly friendship or volunteer activity, was associated with better awareness of the warning symptoms, both stroke (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.20–1.23) and MI (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.20–1.24). Additionally, more diverse types of social activities were associated with higher levels of awareness. Relationship between social activity and awareness showed positive association with participants older than 60 years, rural residents, or with low socioeconomic status.ConclusionEngagement in social activity was significantly associated with better knowledge about the warning symptoms of stroke and MI. For early hospital treatment after symptom onset, participation in social activities could be beneficial

Characteristics of the Korean stock market correlations

In this study, we establish a network structure of the Korean stock market, one of the emerging markets, with its minimum spanning tree through the correlation matrix. Base on this analysis, it is found that the Korean stock market doesn't form the clusters of the business sectors or of the industry categories. When the MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International Inc.) index is exploited, we found that the clusters of the Korean stock market is formed. This finding implicates that the Korean market, in this context, is characteristically different form the mature markets.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, revised on June 200

The Occurrence and Speed of CMEs Related to Two Characteristic Evolution Patterns of Helicity Injection in Their Solar Source Regions

Long-term (a few days) variation of magnetic helicity injection was calculated for 28 solar active regions which produced 47 CMEs to find its relationships with the CME occurrence and speed using SOHO/MDI line-of-sight magnetograms. As a result, we found that the 47 CMEs can be categorized into two different groups by two characteristic evolution patterns of helicity injection in their source active regions which appeared for about 0.5-4.5 days before their occurrence: (1) a monotonically increasing pattern with one sign of helicity (Group A; 30 CMEs in 23 active regions) and (2) a pattern of significant helicity injection followed by its sign reversal (Group B; 17 CMEs in 5 active regions). We also found that CME speed has a correlation with average helicity injection rate with linear correlation coefficients of 0.85 and 0.63 for Group A and Group B, respectively. In addition, these two CME groups show different characteristics as follows: (1) the average CME speed of Group B (1330km/s) is much faster than that of Group A (870km/s), (2) the CMEs in Group A tend to be single events, whereas those in Group B mainly consist of successive events, and (3) flares related to the CMEs in Group B are relatively more energetic and impulsive than those in Group A. Our findings therefore suggest that the two CME groups have different pre-CME conditions in their source active regions and different CME characteristics.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

Light-chain amyloidosis presenting with rapidly progressive submucosal hemorrhage of the stomach

SummaryThe gastrointestinal tract is frequently in involved light-chain (AL) amyloidosis, but significant hemorrhagic complications are rare. A 71-year-old man presented to our hospital with dyspepsia and heartburn for 1 month. Gastroscopy revealed a large submucosal hematoma at the gastric fundus. Two days later, a follow-up gastroscopy indicated extensive expansion of the hematoma throughout the upper half of the stomach. The hematoma displayed ongoing expansion during the endoscopic examination, suggesting that rupture was imminent. Emergency total gastrectomy was performed, and amyloidosis was confirmed after examining the surgical specimen. Bone marrow examination revealed multiple myeloma, and serum immunoglobulin assay confirmed the diagnosis of myeloma-associated AL amyloidosis. At manuscript submission, the patient was doing well and was undergoing chemotherapy

We tried to develop itemized evaluation criteria and a clinical rater qualification system through rating training of inter-rater consistency for experienced clinical dental hygienists and dental hygiene clinical educators. A total of 15 clinical dental hygienists with 1-year careers participated as clinical examination candidates, while 5 dental hygienists with 3-year educations and clinical careers or longer participated as clinical raters. They all took the clinical examination as examinees. The results were compared, and the consistency of competence was measured. The comparison of clinical competence between candidates and clinical raters showed that the candidate group's mean clinical competence ranged from 2.96 to 3.55 on a 5-point system in a total of 3 instruments (Probe, Explorer, Curet), while the clinical rater group's mean clinical competence ranged from 4.05 to 4.29. There was a higher inter-rater consistency after education of raters in the following 4 items: Probe, Explorer, Curet, and insertion on distal surface. The mean score distribution of clinical raters ranged from 75% to 100%, which was more uniform in the competence to detect an artificial calculus than that of candidates (25% to 100%). According to the above results, there was a necessity in the operating clinical rater qualification system for comprehensive dental hygiene clinicians. Furthermore, in order to execute the clinical rater qualification system, it will be necessary to keep conducting a series of studies on educational content, time, frequency, and educator level

Acupuncture, one of the Oriental medical therapeutic techniques that can be traced back at least 2500 years, is growing in popularity all over the world. Korea has continued to develop its own unique tradition of medicine throughout its long history, and has formed different types of acupuncture methods. The purpose of this review is to summarize clinical case studies in acupuncture and related therapies, such as acupressure, electric acupuncture, auricular acupuncture and moxibustion in Korea. A survey of Korean journals revealed that a total of 124 studies were published from 1983 to 2001. Results obtained from the survey showed that most clinical studies using acupuncture, electric acupuncture, moxibustion and other traditional therapies could alleviate a relatively broad range of medical problems. However, it should be emphasized that almost all clinical case studies published in various local journals did not follow the β€˜good clinical practice’ with respect to regulatory aspects. Since they were not conducted using the randomized double-blinded controls with a large sample size, all the results should be considered as therapeutic indications. This review is an attempt to show the scope of acupuncture in our country and the kind of diseases, after many years of clinical experience, that were deemed valid targets for clinical trials

The purpose of this research was to analyze the effect of wearing underwear type functional garment for the correction scoliosis by conducting a case study. Two patients wore the garment for 8–week. Cobb’s angle and EMG activities during a gait were measured before and after the treatment for the analysis. Both subjects showed that the activities of the right psoas, biceps femoris and gluteus medius were increased. The Cobb’s angle was decreased after 8-week period of wearing. These results matched with the purpose of developed functional correction wear that induce the right psoas muscle contraction and the left psoas muscle relaxation. It seems to be useful wear for adolescent scoliosis patients who avoid using orthosis, and to use special functional underwear to improve their posture
