This dissertation investigates the coevolution of industrial book formats in the 19th century and women’s critique of marriage in fiction, arguing that the highly decorated case binding both reflected and shaped broader cultural anxieties engendered by the accessibility of new literary forms to mass audiences and the impact of that literature on the cultural logics by which women understood their roles and options. Given the reciprocal relationship between the mechanisms of industrial print and women’s writing, the material conditions of book production are important considerations for the literary scholar. The four novels examined in this dissertation—Fanny Fern’s Rose Clark, Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Lizzie Holmes’s Hagar Lyndon, and Rosa Graul’s Hilda’s Home—are not merely examples of the intersection of material textuality and literary studies, they are critical interventions in women’s struggle over the 19th century for sexual and reproductive autonomy. Fern in Rose Clark explicitly links the capacity of the industrial steam presses to the production of fraudulent narratives about women and presents a radically revised heroine in Gertrude Dean, a woman who can navigate the world of print and envision alternatives to marriage. Jacobs makes clear in Incidents and the actions she took to bring it to print that the legal and ideological system of American slavery denied her ownership of both self and story, an ownership she reclaimed by writing her story and purchasing the material text in the form of its stereotype plates. The Free Love writes Rosa Graul and Lizzie Holmes serialized their novels in Moses Harmon’s anarchist newspaper, Lucifer the Light Bearer, where the Free Love community’s open exchange of ideas gave rise to the women’s free love novel, an early and unacknowledged example of the process utopia that called explicitly for women’s sexual autonomy and the abolition of marriage

Rupture of Couvelaire uterus-a very rare case report

    Get PDF
Couvelaire uterus is a complication seen in some severe forms of abruptio placentae. A careful watch and early identification can prevent grave maternal and fetal outcome. In literature, there are very few cases reported of rupture of Couvelaire uterus as it is a very rare entity. Our study highlights a case of 24 year old with nine months amenorrhea presented with abruption placenta and intrauterine fetal death. Diagnosis of ruptured Couvelaire uterus made and the same was repaired and managed. We were able to save the mother successfully

Correlation between hyperuricemia and lipid profile in untreated dyslipidemic patients

    Get PDF
There are a number of epidemiological studies that suggest the association of cardiovascular diseases and uric acid but very few studies highlight the direct association of deranged lipid profile with uric acid levels. The present study was  indented to find out if any association exists between hyperuricemia and dyslipidemia. Blood samples were collected from healthy controls (n=70) and patients with dyslipidemia (n=70) who were not receiving any treatment for  dyslipidemia. These samples were processed for estimating lipid profile and uric acid levels. The parameters in the two groups were compared. Correlation between different parameters was calculated by Pearson correlation analysis in both the groups. Uric acid levels (6.40 ± 1.27 vs 4.89 ± 0.21 mg/dl, P<0.001) were significantly higher in patients as compared to those in controls. There was significant increase in the levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TAGs), LDL-C, VLDL-C, non-HDL cholesterol (P<0.001 in each case), in patients of dyslipidemia. However, significant decrease in the levels of HDL-C (P<0.001) was seen in patients compared to controls. LDL-C/HDL-C ratio (P<0.001), TC/HDL-C ratio (P<0.001) and TAG/HDL-C ratio (P<0.001) were also significantly increased in dyslipidemic subjects when compared to controls. Uric acid had significant  correlations with TC (r=0.334, P<0.001), TAGs (r = 0.288, P<0.001), LDL-C (r = 0.241, P<0.001), VLDL-C (r= 0.158, P<0.001) and HDL-C (r= –0.652, P<0.001) in patients. Results of this study imply that there is higher association of  hyperuricemia in dyslipidemic patients than normal subjects. Therefore treatment of underlying hyperuricemia should be an important aspect in planning the treatment strategy for dyslipidemia to reduce the cardiovascular morbidity. Keywords: Cardiovascular disease; Coronary artery disease; Dyslipidemia;Hyperuricemia; Lipid rati

Higher order duality in multiobjective fractional programming with support functions

    Get PDF
AbstractIn this paper a new class of higher order (F,ρ,σ)-type I functions for a multiobjective programming problem is introduced, which subsumes several known studied classes. Higher order Mond–Weir and Schaible type dual programs are formulated for a nondifferentiable multiobjective fractional programming problem where the objective functions and the constraints contain support functions of compact convex sets in Rn. Weak and strong duality results are studied in both the cases assuming the involved functions to be higher order (F,ρ,σ)-type I. A number of previously studied problems appear as special cases

Mindfulness as an antidote to conspicuous consumption:The mediating roles of self-esteem, self-concept clarity and normative influence

    Get PDF
Extant research in consumer behaviour has demonstrated the pervasiveness of conspicuous consumption as a means of psychological salve from inner conflicts such as self-discrepancies with regard to one's status, abilities, power or self-esteem. In this paper we propose mindfulness as an antidote to conspicuous consumption behaviour. Using structural equation modelling and survey responses of 588 consumers (312 non-meditators and 276 meditators), the current research examines the potential sequential mediation effects of self-esteem, self-concept-clarity and consumer susceptibility to normative influence on the association between mindfulness and conspicuous consumption. The results reveal significant differences in conspicuous consumption between the two groups and show that dispositional mindfulness is negatively related to conspicuous consumption in both the samples. Further, mediation effects are confirmed and plausible feedback loops are also identified. The empirical investigation may be useful in understanding the mechanism through which mindfulness works as an antidote to conspicuous consumption, a behaviour which is often seen as detrimental to wellbeing

    EEG Based Panic Tracker

ABSTRACT: EEG signals picked up from scalp can be processed and determined to understand the state of mind. The application which has been referred in this paper picks up the signal and transmits it through GPRS every 5 seconds, to a dedicated web-server which triggers the appropriate response based on the comparison of EEG frequency repository and sends the SMS to concerned person and to the ambulance/hospital near the person in panic. This application would be a boon for old people, heart patients and disabled people. This paper deals with understanding aspects of EEG Based Panic Tracker and challenges that are being faced in its development

Asymmetric Synthesis of -Borylated Amines via Rhodium-Catalyzed Hydroboration of Allylamine Derivatives

The Takacs group has explored different dimensions of Catalytic Asymmetric Hydroboration (CAHB) reaction mainly focusing on variety of amide, oxime ether and phosphonate directing groups. Inspired by the results obtained with BINOL- and TADDOL- derived chiral catalysts along with pinacolborane, we explored the potential of acyclic N-acyl allylamines as substrates for direct-hydroboration to prepare chiral amine derivatives bearing g-boronic ester functionality, yields up to 90% with 98:2 enantioselectivity. The major enantiomer obtained is independent of starting alkene geometry, revealing that rhodium-catalyzed cis/trans-alkene isomerization occurs prior to hydroboration. In this poster, we will discuss the generation of active catalysts starting from different pre-catalysts. We find that the counterion (e.g., BF4-, BArF-) plays an important role in the reaction. Furthermore, we find that the addition of an external fluoride source (e.g., tetrabutylammonium difluorotriphenylsilicate (TBAT)) significantly impacts the reaction rate. These and other observations lead us to consider a novel catalytic cycle initiated by a rhodium(I)-hydride complex. Finally, the stereospecific transformations of the newly generated C–B bond to access drug candidates will be highlighted to demonstrate the utility of these chiral synthons
