Multi-objective optimisation of integrated space-based and terrestrial solar energy systems

    Get PDF
This paper proposes the simultaneous optimisation of a combination of a number of ground solar power plants with a space-based solar plant (SPS) delivering electric power for European needs. A simplified mathematical model of the integrated space and ground system is developed and used to quantify the mass in space and the cost of the ground plants. The model takes into account the geographical location of the ground stations, the size of the power storage units as well as the orbital motion of the SPS. An evolutionary algorithm is then used to find the optimal trade-off between size and location of the space segment and cost of the ground segment. The results in this paper provide an insight in the usefulness of the support that an SPS system can provide to a ground-based solar power generation system

Exploring Quest and Cultural Humility in Relation to the Spiritual Identities of Doctoral Clinical Psychology Students at a Christian University

Graduate students receiving doctoral training in clinical psychology from Christian universities often undergo unique changes in their faith identity. Previous research has demonstrated a decline in faith commitment, religious attributions, religious coping, and religious activities during doctoral training (Edwards, 2006; Fisk et al., 2013). While periods of religious disengagement among clinical psychology graduate students seem to be consistent across research studies, some research suggests positive religious transformation as students progress through clinical training and into their professional careers (Hofer, 2004; Pearce, 1996). Cultural humility is an other-oriented stance that is characterized by lifelong learning, cultural self-awareness and reflection, and interpersonal respect for the experience of others (Mosher et al., 2016). No research at this time has examined a possible movement toward a religious quest orientation that may encapsulate the complex faith experiences of graduate clinical psychology students at Christian universities and may be associated with the development of cultural humility. Seventy-seven students in four cohorts enrolled in a Christian doctoral clinical psychology program completed surveys measuring quest and cultural humility. Results of this study did not demonstrate significant differences amongst cohorts in cultural humility, quest, and intrinsic religiosity. Further, no differences were found in cultural humility in dyadic subsets of students demonstrating either heightened quest, intrinsic religiosity, or both quest and intrinsic religiosity as compared to the remaining samples. These results also indicate no significant relationship between quest and intrinsic religiosity with cultural humility. Implications and limitations of this study are discussed

Designs of multi-spacecraft swarms for the deflection of apophis by solar sublimation

    Get PDF
This paper presents two conceptual designs of multi-spacecraft swarms used for deflecting Apophis. Each spacecraft is equipped with a solar concentrator assembly, which focuses the solar light, and a beaming system that projects a beam of light onto the surface of the asteroid. When the beams from each spacecraft are superimposed, the temperature on the surface is enough to sublimate the rock, creating a debris plume with enough force to slowly alter the orbit of Apophis. An overview of the dynamics, control and navigation strategies are presented along with preliminary system budgets

A graph arising in the Geometry of Numbers

    Get PDF
The parametric geometry of numbers has allowed to visualize the simultaneous approximation properties of a collection of real numbers through the combined graph of the related successive minima functions. Several inequalities among classical exponents of simultaneous approximation can be guessed by a study of these graphs; in particular the so called regular graph is of major importance as it provides an extremal case for some of these inequalities. The aim of this paper is to define and construct an analogue of the regular graph in the case of weighted simultaneous approximation.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

Myomectomy as a pregnancy-preserving option in the carefully selected patient

    Get PDF
Objectives: To present the indications for myomectomy during pregnancy and to discuss complications possibly related and unrelated to the procedure. Method and Results: A 33-year-old patient at 18 weeks of gestation underwent removal of a 1,570-gram symptomatic fundic myoma. Histologically the patient had a leiomyomatous neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential. The pregnancy was continued under sequential observation with magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound. At 36 weeks of gestation a healthy girl with an upper extremity limb defect was born via cesarean section. Follow-up of the mother and the child was uneventful. Conclusions: Certain known risk factors in pregnant women with myomas can predispose to complications during pregnancy. Women with such risk factors or women who have failed medical therapy should be offered the option of undergoing myomectomy as a pregnancy-preserving procedure. Copyright (C) 2002 S. This paper presents the conceptual design of multiple spacecraft system for the use of deflecting Near Earth Asteroids. Each spacecraft is equipped with a solar concentrator assembly, which focuses the solar light, and a beaming system that projects a beam of light onto the surface of the asteroid. When the beams from each spacecraft are superimposed, the temperature on the surface is enough to sublimate the rock, creatng a debris plume with enough force to slowly alter the orbit of Apophis. An overview of the dynamics, control and navigation strategies is presented along with simulated results of the deviation distance achieved for various mission configurations

Evaluation der Minimalen Alveolären Konzentration von Isofluran bei zwei transgenen Mausmodellen für die Alzheimer Krankheit

According to studies an estimated 5 per cent of people older than 65 years are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The pathology of this disease might also influence some anaesthesiological parameters. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the Alzheimer- like pathology on the minimal alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane in two mice models of Alzheimer’s disease. The MAC values of isoflurane were determined in twelve fifty month old, transgenic APP23 male mice, which over-express a human amyloid precursor protein with the Swedish double mutation and of twelve of their non-transgenic littermates. In the same way, the MAC values of twelve fifty month old, male transgenic APP51 mice, which carry the same genetic construct as the APP23, however, without the Swedish double mutation and of twelve of their non-transgenic littermates were determined. The animals breathed isoflurane in oxygen/air (FiO2=0,5) spontaneously through a nose chamber. The motor reaction to toe-clamping was recorded at various end-expiratory measured concentrations of isoflurane. An individual MAC was defined as the average between the largest isoflurane concentration permitting movement and the smallest concentration preventing it. The average of this individual MAC values was taken as the MAC of a test group. Statistical analysis was made with an unpaired t-test (p<0,05). The APP23 mice had significantly greater MAC values than their non-transgenic littermates. The MAC value of the APP51 was significantly lower than those of their non-transgenic group compared to. These results strongly pointed out that the higher MAC values of the APP23 mice are due to the effect of the Swedish double mutation and are not only a consequence of the overexpression of the human amyloid precursor protein or the genetic construct. Several Alzheimer typical alterations like neurotransmitter imbalances may be considered as explanations for the result of the APP23 mice. Further studies are needed to clarify this in detail
