    Get PDF
My thesis will analyze the religious life of Bangladeshi Muslims in Atlanta, Georgia. Previous research recognized a significant clash between secular nationalistic ideology and Islamic ideology in Bangladesh and elsewhere; therefore, this research focuses on Atlanta’s Bangladeshi Muslims’ identity and ideology regarding secularism and Islamism. Previous literature reveals the fact that some terms about Muslims like fundamentalist, extremist, and revivalist are intermingled with terrorism and radicalism; Muslims are identified based on these terms and concepts. This paper also examines the fear of Islam in America and how this fear impacts Bangladeshi Muslims in Atlanta. This research will focus on the ideology and identity of Bangladeshi Muslim in their religious life. It will analyze the conflicts, clashes, threats, inner conflicts and dilemmas of Bangladeshi Muslims regarding Islam while dealing with a two-way fear that I possess as a Muslim; I bear a fear of Islamist terrorist attack and a fear of being a Muslim in America. Therefore, it considers how America treats Muslims and Islam as a religion, and how the life of Bangladeshi Muslims in Atlanta is impacted. The research is based upon several interviews with Bangladeshi Muslims in the Atlanta area, participation observations, and my experiences as a Bangladeshi Muslim

Characterization of chromosomal translocations in a group of killifish species by using genome-wide high-density SNP mapping approach

The role of chromosomal rearrangements in reproductive isolation and introgression between species is poorly understood. In heterozygous form, rearrangements may directly interrupt meiotic progression leading to partial sterility/subfertility (underdominance) or may suppress local meiotic segregation (recombination suppression). Such unbalanced meiotic segregation may also result in reproductive isolation and play roles as a driving force of speciation. The objective of this study was to gain insight into the pattern of chromosomal rearrangements in two closely related killifish species in the genus Fundulus (F. notatus, and F. olivaceus) by constructing genetic linkage maps using high-resolution single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Markers associated with Robertsonian (Rb) translocations in F. notatus were generated by high-throughput genotyping-by sequencing (GBS) method and intra-specific SNPs were aligned to contigs in a reference F. olivaceus genome. This SNP-based mapping approach revealed 24 linkage groups (LGs) in F. olivaceus and 20 LGs in F. notatus including four Rb fusions (corresponding to chromosomes). We also found strong homology at the LG level between our maps and a previously constructed F. heteroclitus linkage map. Finally, using these maps and GBS-SNP data, we compared patterns of hybridization and introgression between populations of F. olivaceus and F. notatus from two natural hybrid zones. We observed weak prezygotic isolation, but stronger post-zygotic isolation between karyotypically different populations, which indicated multiple chromosomal fusions in F. notatus might have influenced reproductive viability of F1 hybrids, promoting reproductive isolation between these two species --Abstract, page iii

Characterization of hydroxyapatite/polypyrrole/poly (caprolactone) based solvent cast thin films

    Get PDF
This study addressed the fabrication of thin films composed of Polypyrrole (PPy), hydroxyapatite (HA) and poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) via solvent casting method. The polymer and composite films were subsequently characterized in terms of morphology, wettability and water uptake properties using different techniques. The characterization of the thin films were determined using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), water contact angle and water uptake. The addition of HA and PPy reduced the hydrophobic properties of PCL in the thin films. An energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analysis supported the existence of HA in composite thin films. Water uptake of PCL thin film was lower than HA/PCL and HA/PPy/PCL composite thin films. © 2006-2016 Asian Research Publishing Network (ARPN)

    Get PDF
Cellulose-based materials are one of the most commonly used materials for biomedical applications, which normally applied as carriers for pharmaceuticals and drug-releasing scaffolds. In this study, cellulose acetate (CA) was used to fabricate the nanofibrous membrane using the electrospinning technique. CA solutions at different concentrations were prepared by dissolving the polymer in a mixture of acetic acid/acetone solvents with the ratio of 3: 1. The field emission scanning electron microscope results showed that electrospinning of 10% (w/v) CA produced nanofibres with many beads. When the CA concentration was increased to 14% (w/v), bead-free nanofibres were produced. The contact angle measurement results confirmed the hydrophilic properties of nanofibres. In order to prevent common bacterial infections, a model drug, Tetracycline • HCL was incorporated into the CA nanofibres. The drug-loaded CA nanofibres showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. CA nanofibres had high water uptake properties. The CA nanofibrous membrane was non-toxic to human skin fibroblast cells. Thus the CA nanofibres with 14% (w/v) concentration exerted suitable properties for wound healing application

Tissue engineering is an evolving technique to reduce the limitations of the bone graft. It provides diversity to improve the healing process of bone fractures and defect by combining the use of 3D scaffolds, healing promoting factors, gene therapy and different drugs. Flexibility to use a different technique to fabricate scaffolds lead to the new insight of bone healing future. A bone graft is defined as promoted bone healing through osteogenesis, osteoinduction, and osteoconduction by the implanted material alone or with other materials. Ideal bone graft depends on several factors such as biomechanical characteristic, tissue viability, the morphological structure as well as biological characteristics. In this work, we have investigated adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of poly (ɛ-caprolactone) / chitosan scaffolds with the incorporation of hydroxyapatite and tetracycline HCl on normal human osteoblast cells. Both of the polymers were blended without a cross-linking agent to form porous scaffolds by freeze-drying technique. From the results, it was observed that the compressive modulus increased from 4.0 MPa to 12.5 MPa and the yield strength increased from 0.48 MPa to 0.75 MPa for the PCL/CS scaffold and nHA/PCL/CS scaffold, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy study revealed that the cells successfully adhered to the surface of scaffolds after 24 hours incubation. Proliferation analysis exhibited increasing trend of growth of cells. This study indicated that the scaffold fabricated using this technique was able to promote adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of normal human osteoblast cells
