    The Level of Directness in Apologising in Akeelah and the Bee Movie Dialogue

    This paper discusses precisely the production of the speech acts of apology.The choice for apology is due to its popularity as a study of speech act and being anillocutionary force so common to take place in daily context. This paper aims toexplicate the appropriate strategies of conveying apologies as part of Speech Acts inthe social interaction done by the speaker and addressee in movie conversation.Apologies is one of these speech acts, discussed through the analysis of conversation in?贸脭茅录?楼Akeelah and the Bee?贸脭茅录?漏 movie concerned with the level of directness. The data for theanalysis is taken from the dialogue transcripts of Akeelah and the bee movie. Remedialapology with assymetrical relationship are mostly found in the dialogue. The various wayof conveying apology between the characters prefers in polite apology

    The morfosyntactical errors in students?贸脭茅录脭盲贸 writing composition have been a phenomenon that both writing teachers and other faculty members have complained about. Those errors are not only made by junior students, but also made by senoir students at the university level. One of the reasons of making those morfosyntactical errors is that our students still use their background knowledge of Indonesian sentences?贸脭茅录脭盲贸 structure in their English writing.?茅?谩?茅?谩 The main objective of this research is to investigate the influence of schemata of Indonesian language structure toward the ill-formedness of English sentences. In brief, this research studies the morfosyntax elements that can cause the formation of ill-formed sentences, the types of ill-formed sentences made by Indonesian students in writing English composition, and also to investigate the students?贸脭茅录脭盲贸 difficuties in writing English. The data of this research was taken from the 3rd semester students of the English Education Department of IKIP PGRI Semarang. The researchers collected the data by (1) Observation and mid semester test result to choose the students. Those who got the score 75 or upper were choosen as the repondents. (2) Questionnaire, and (3) The writing test. From the findings, it was found that the schemata of Indonesian language structure give a significant influence toward the ill-formedness of students?贸脭茅录脭盲贸 English sentences. The most frequent types of ill-formedness are from: noun form and tenses. This fact indicates that our students have difficulty mostly in those two types of topic

    Demoralization occured in school life. Teachers as the person incharge of the students?贸脭茅录脭盲贸 education in school must find the way out to demolish the demoralization. Character Education needs to be developed in school to maintain students?贸脭茅录脭盲贸 behaviour. Character Building is important to be developed in the learning process. The development of Character Building is integrated into subject matters in elementary schools. Teachers should be involved in the character education for students. In running the process of learning, instructional materials are needed. Syllabus and lesson plan are parts of the instructional materials. Teachers are not only responsible for educating students in school but also responsible for building students?贸脭茅录脭盲贸 characters through the material they deliver. Character Buildings are integrated in the syllabus and lesson plan in order that the students can apply the moral values from the material they learn in their daily lifes. The syllabus and lesson plan improvement with all the potency can be used for supporting the effectivity of character education implementation which is becoming the prior attention. Teachers should know more about students personality and what students need in the learning process. Teachers can improve their skills in making syllabus and lesson plans based character education by joining this workshop.     The Analysis of Translation Techniques of Irony and Sarcasm in Novel Entitled the Sign of the Four

    This research was aimed to identify the translation techniques used in translating the irony and sarcasm utterances in novel entitled The Sign of the Four and to find out the translation quality appearing as the effects of those translation technique applications. This research was an qualitative research. Data of this research were utterances or sentences in the novel The Sign of The Four which involves two different languages both the SL (English) and the TL (Indonesian). This research focused on product since the research questions were formulated to be answered based on the written texts which contain ironic and sarcasm utterances. Purposive sampling technique was choosen in choosing the data. The object of this research were ironic and sarcasm utterances, type of translation technique, and translation quality which cover accuracy, acceptability, and readibility of translated text English to Indonesia of novel The Sign of The Four. The research findings reveal that the type of sarcasm found in The Sign of The Four novel are illocutionary sarcasm and proportional sarcasm. The sarcasm marker of iilocutionary sarcasm is the manner violation. While proportional sarcasm is characterized by self contradiction. When considering the context of the utterance, the sarcastic utterances are expressed by the actor, in order to insult his partner. The irony found in the novel is the ironical interjection characterized by the unusual collocation. Translation used in translating the ironic and sarcasm utterances in this novel are; reduction, amplification (addition), compensation, transposition, adaptation, discursive creation, and calque. The impact of the use of translation techniques is on the quality of the translated text. Acceptance of the translation is worth 3 (acceptable). Translation accuracy varies from 1 to 3 (from accurate to inaccurate)

    Patterns Of Apologetic Utterances Expressed By English Students And Non-english Students

    This study aimed at finding out the patterns of apologetic utterance expressed by English department students and non-English department students. The participants of this study were 20 students of English department and 20 students of Biology department students. The data were taken from Discourse Completion Task serving 5 different situations. The responses of the situations were categorized into different patterns of apology offered by Olshtains (1983). The result showed that English students and Biology students have different characteristics in uttering apology. The English students tend to be straight to the point in uttering apology followed by a bit of explanation, while Biology students like to have long apology with more detail explanation. There is no significant difference in the realization of apology speech act uttered by the students. No factor influences the difference in the way they convey apology. Both applies similar various strategies to apologize. Direct apology and Direct Apology followed by Explanation are mostly chosen by the students as the strategies in conveying apology

    Analisis Kesalahan Gramatikal pada Penulisan Descriptive Text Mahasiswa Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas PGRI Semarang

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengindentifikasi berbagai kesalahan gramatikal berdasarkan Surface Strategy Taxonomy dan frekuensi kemunculannya serta untuk mengetahui berbagai macam problematika mahasiswa ketika menulis teks dalam bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif-kuantitatif dengan instrument berupa tes tertulis berbentuk esai dan kuesioner. Teks deskriptif berbahasa Inggris yang ditulis oleh mahasiswa semester tiga merupakan objek dari penelitian ini. Teks-teks tersebut kemudian dianalisis berdasarkan teori Surface Strategy Taxonomy yang dikemukakan oleh Dulay. Dari hasil analisis teks, peneliti menemukan 4 jenis kesalahan gramatikal yang sesuai dengan teori Dulay. 4 jenis kesalahan tersebut berupa Omission (68.31%), Addition (9.6%), Misformation (8.45%), dan Misordering (2.11%). Berbagai macam problematika yang dihadapi mahasiswa ketika menulis diantaranya adalah lemahnya pemahaman tentang tenses, lemahnya penguasaan vocabulary, pemilihan leksikal yang tidak tepat dala kalimat, dan penyusunan struktur kalimat yang salah dalam teks. Dalam hal ini, mahasiswa masih menuliskan teks dengan memakai struktur kalimat bahasa asli atau bahasa Indonesia
