    Low Power Autonomous Microsystem for Oil Well Logging Applications

    Downhole environmental monitoring can provide significant benefits to the petroleum industry. The rapid development of semiconductor technology enables autonomous sensing microsystems to operate at extreme environments. By injecting these microsystems into the boreholes and retrieving them after deployment, the geophysical conditions in the area of interest can be obtained. Challenges include high temperature, high pressure, miniaturized system size and packaging. This dissertation describes three generations of the environmental logging microsystem (ELM) for downhole geophysical logging applications. The first generation of the microsystem, ELM1.0, is designed for temperature logging in downhole environments. Each system consists of a power management circuit, a microcontroller with an integrated temperature sensor, and optical indicators. The system electronics are integrated on a flexible printed circuit board and packaged in a steel shell. The ELM1.0 has a packaged size of 8.9×8.9×6.85 mm3. It was tested at up to 125°C, 50 MPa in high salinity condition. The second generation (ELM2.0 & ELM2.1) is upgraded from ELM1.0 by adding a micromachined capacitive pressure sensor for pressure sensing up to 50 MPa. The ELM2.0 & ELM2.1 systems are packaged in steel shells filled with transparent polymer for pressure transfer. The packaged systems have a dimension of 9.5×9.5×6.5 mm3. The third generation (ELM3.0) is upgraded from ELM2.0 with a power switch and a low-cost polyimide pressure sensor for coarse pressure measurement up to 50 MPa. Both ELM2.0 and ELM3.0 systems were successfully tested at up to 125°C, 50 MPa in corrosive environments using laboratory instruments, and in a brine well at a depth up to 1235 m. A progressive polynomial calibration method was used for interpretation of the pressure sensor data from these tests. In addition, a high power micromachined RF switch for radio transceiver applications was designed, fabricated and tested. The RF switch can potentially be used to establish antenna networks for RF communication in the ELM. The switch consists of a bridge structure for electrostatic actuation and capacitive contact. The switch was fabricated with a 7-mask process.     Family, learning environments, learning approaches, and student outcomes in a Malaysian private university

    This paper presents the quantitative findings from a mixed methods study of students and faculty at a private medical university in Malaysia. In particular, the relationships among students’ individual characteristics, general self-efficacy, family context, university and classroom learning environments, curriculum, approaches to learning, and measures of students’ academic achievement, self-directed learning readiness and mental health at the student level. Data were collected from 392 students attending a private medical university in Malaysia. The findings from the partial least square path (PLSPATH) suggest that: (a) parental involvement continues to impact and influence student learning process, and related student outcomes, at the university level, and (b) a surface approach to learning is related to poor quality processes and outcomes and a deep approach to learning is related to high quality processes and outcomes

    Age- and sex- specific all-cause mortality risk greatest in metabolic syndrome combinations with elevated blood pressure from 7 U.S. cohorts

    Background The association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and all-cause mortality is well established but it is unclear if there are differences in mortality risk among the 32 possible MetS combinations. Hence, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the associations between different MetS combinations and its individual components with all-cause mortality, and to examine differences in the association by age and sex. Methods A merged sample of 82,717 adults from 7 U.S. cohorts was used. Results In our sample, MetS was present in 32% of men, 34% of women, 28% of younger adults (18–65 years) and 62% of older adults (>65 years) with 14,989 deaths over 14.6 ± 7.4 years of follow-up. Risk of all-cause mortality was higher in younger individuals with a greater number of MetS factors present, but in older adults having all 5 MetS factors was the only combination significantly associated with mortality. Regardless of age or sex, elevated blood pressure was the MetS factor most consistently present in MetS combinations that were significantly and most strongly associated with mortality. In fact, elevated blood pressure in the absence of other risk factors was significantly associated with mortality in men (HR, 95% CI = 1.56, 1.33–1.84), women (HR = 1.62, 1.44–1.81) and younger adults (HR = 1.61, 1.45–1.79). Conversely, waist circumference, glucose and triglycerides in isolation were not associated with mortality (p>0.05). Conclusion In a large U.S. population, different combinations of MetS components vary substantially in their associations with all-cause mortality. Men, women and younger individuals with MetS combinations including elevated blood pressure had stronger associations with greater mortality risk, with minimal associations between MetS and mortality risk in older adults. Thus, we suggest that future algorithms may wish to consider differential weighting of these common metabolic risk factors, particularly in younger populations.York University Librarie

    Analysis of the cone penetration test in layered clay

    This paper presents an analysis of the cone penetration test in multi-layered clays using the commercial finite-element code Abaqus/Explicit. The von Mises yield criterion and its associated flow rule are assumed to model the plastic behaviour of elastoplastic undrained clays. An arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian scheme and an enhanced hourglass algorithm are adopted to preserve the quality of mesh throughout the numerical simulation. Initially, the behaviour of the penetration resistance is examined in a soil with only two layers. The bottom layer is the weaker of the two and the behaviour of the penetration resistance when the cone approaches the lower layer is studied. The investigation is then extended to study the cone penetration test in a multi-layered clay by sandwiching a weaker clay layer between two stronger clay layers. The thickness of the weaker clay layer is varied and the behaviour of the penetration resistance is studied in relation to the thickness and relative strength of the soil layers. The results are discussed with respect to the soil mechanisms that are present when the cone moves past the relevant layer boundaries so that the position of these boundaries can be determined more accurately
