    Geometric anticipation: assisting users in 2D layout tasks

    We describe an experimental interface that anticipates a user's intentions and accommodates predicted changes in advance. Our canonical example is an interactive version of ``magnetic poetry'' in which rectangular blocks containing single words can be juxtaposed to form arbitrary sentences or ``poetry.'' The user can rearrange the blocks at will, forming and dissociating word sequences. A crucial attribute of the blocks in our system is that they anticipate insertions and gracefully rearrange themselves in time to make space for a new word or phrase. The challenges in creating such an interface are three fold: 1) the user's intentions must be inferred from noisy input, 2) arrangements must be altered smoothly and intuitively in response to anticipated changes, and 3) new and changing goals must be handled gracefully at any time, even in mid animation. We describe a general approach for handling the dynamic creation and deletion of organizational goals. Fluid motion is achieved by continually applying and correcting goal-directed forces to the objects. Future applications of this idea include the manipulation of text and graphical elements within documents and the manipulation of symbolic information such as equations

    Remote sensing of lunar aureole with a sky camera: Adding information in the nocturnal retrieval of aerosol properties with GRASP code

    The use of sky cameras for nocturnal aerosol characterization is discussed in this study. Two sky cameras are configured to take High Dynamic Range (HDR) images at Granada and Valladolid (Spain). Some properties of the cameras, like effective wavelengths, sky coordinates of each pixel and pixel sensitivity, are characterized. After that, normalized camera radiances at lunar almucantar points (up to 20° in azimuth from the Moon) are obtained at three effective wavelengths from the HDR images. These normalized radiances are compared in different case studies to simulations fed with AERONET aerosol information, giving satisfactory results. The obtained uncertainty of normalized camera radiances is around 10% at 533 nm and 608 nm and 14% for 469 nm. Normalized camera radiances and six spectral aerosol optical depth values (obtained from lunar photometry) are used as input in GRASP code (Generalized Retrieval of Aerosol and Surface Properties) to retrieve aerosol properties for a dust episode over Valladolid. The retrieved aerosol properties (refractive indices, fraction of spherical particles and size distribution parameters) are in agreement with the nearest diurnal AERONET products.     Differences in growth rates and pre-hibernation body mass gain between early and late-born juvenile garden dormice

    International audienceJuvenile hibernators have to allocate energy to both growth and fattening, to survive winter, and to avoid possible disadvantages during their first reproductive season. Being born late in the active season may have important effects on growth and fattening. This study aimed at determining potential differences in rates and maximal level of growth, and in pre-hibernation body fat mass between early and late-born juvenile garden dormice (Eliomys quercinus), and kept in outdoor enclosures with ad libitum food and water. We first assessed mean pup mass in early and late-born litters (n = 31) from birth to their early weaning phase, at which time body composition was determined. Then, growth and body mass of early and late-born individuals (six males and six females, for each group) were measured weekly until hibernation onset (n = 24). We also assessed fat content in a group of juveniles during pre-hibernation fattening (n = 16) and after their first winter hibernation (n = 18). During the pre-weaning phase, young from early and late litters mainly grew structurally and gained mass at similar rates. After weaning, late-born juveniles grew and gained mass twice as fast as early born individuals. Body mass was positively associated with fat content during pre-hibernation fattening. Late-born females reached similar structural sizes, but had lower pre-hibernation fat reserves than early born females. Conversely, late-born males showed lower maximal size and pre-hibernation body fat content, compared with early born males. Thus, individuals born late in the season cannot fully compensate the lack of available time before the winter onset

    Direct HDR Capture of the Sun and Sky

    We present a technique for capturing the extreme dynamic range of natural illumination environments that include the sun and sky, which has presented a challenge for traditional high dynamic range photography processes. We find that through careful selection of exposure times, aperture, and neutral density filters that this full range can be covered in seven exposures with a standard digital camera. We discuss the particular calibration issues such as lens vignetting, infrared sensitivity, and spectral transmission of neutral density filters which must be addressed. We present an adaptive exposure range adjustment technique for minimizing the number of exposures necessary. We demonstrate our results by showing time-lapse renderings of a complex scene illuminated by high-resolution, high dynamic range natural illumination environments

    e light onto the casts with the video projector. Because of the efficiency of the system, we were able to scan over 440 linear feet of frieze, 52 metopes, and both pediments in just five days with a team of four people, totaling nearly 2,200 individual scans. Our calibration process involved scanning a flat checkerboard grid pattern in several orientations, allowing us to solve for the distortion characteristics and the relative orientations of the camera and projector. We developed methods for extracting these calibrations using HDRShop and Matlab, and then streamlined the process into a single Windows application. Given such calibration parameters and a scan of a sculpture, the 3D structure of the visible surface is triangulated. We found it was faster to remove undesirable geometry in the 2D camera image space before the scans were converted to 3D meshes. For this we developed a program that allows the user to view the scanned surface normals and mask out specific regions
