The digital student experience at UAL
This report presents an investigation into the student experience in digital contexts at UAL. It provides insights into areas of practice and communication that are high in studentsâ minds, and explores how we can make better use of technology to manage and meet studentsâ expectations. The research is based on a University-wide
survey, which received 433 responses across all colleges and a wide range of disciplines. The survey design
was informed by the opinions expressed in a series of small-scale focus groups. Conducting the survey at this later stage enabled us to elicit more detailed data about the themes that emerged during the focus groups. Moodle was a focal point of the work as it is the most frequently used and well-known element of the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) services provided by UAL. However findings were also made about Myblog.arts and Workflow, UALâs blogging and e-portfolio platforms
First year student experience
The application was made on behalf of the undergraduate courses team who sought to enhance the first year experience by engaging students in the practice of business. The intention was to develop and signpost enterprising qualities and characteristics in first year learners and develop confidence as well as competence.
The undergraduate review for FBL commenced in September 2009. This offered an opportunity to innovate and build good practice in enterprise learning as a pilot to inform the undergraduate review. The team sought to provide a coherent and relevant set of learning experiences that could be achieved outside structured curriculum that would enable learning through live projects

Enhancing the early student experience
This paper is concerned with identifying how the early student experience can be enhanced in order to improve levels of student retention and achievement. The early student experience is the focus of this project as the literature has consistently declared the first year to be the most critical in shaping persistence decisions. Programme managers of courses with high and low retention rates have been interviewed to identify activities that appear to be associated with good retention rates. The results show that there are similarities in the way programmes with high retention are run, with these features not being prevalent on programmes with low retention. Recommendations of activities that appear likely to enhance the early student experience are provided
