The experience of Parkinsonā€™s Disease: A systematic review and meta-ethnography

    Get PDF
There has been little attempt to summarise and synthesise qualitative studies concerning the experience and perception of living with Parkinsonā€™s disease. Bringing this information together would provide a background to understand the importance of an individualā€™s social identity on their well-being and hope. Three primary aims were identified (a) understanding the importance of social identity and meaningful activities on individualsā€™ well-being, (b) identifying factors and strategies that influence well-being and hope, and (c) establishing a model that relates to an individualā€™s hope and well-being. Three stages were undertaken including a traditional electronic search, a critical appraisal of articles, and a synthesis of studies. Qualitative articles were included that considered the experience of living with Parkinsonā€™s disease. Thirty seven articles were located and included in the review. Five themes were identified and the themes were used to inform development of a new model of hope enablement. The current review furthered understanding of how physical symptoms and the experience of Parkinsonā€™s disease affect the individualā€™s well-being and hope. Social identity was established as a key factor that influenced an individualā€™s well-being. Being able to maintain, retain, or develop social identities was essential for the well-being and hope of individuals with Parkinsonā€™s disease. Understanding the factors which prevent or can facilitate this is essential

Association between osteoarthritis and cardiovascular disease: systematic review and meta-analysis

    Get PDF
Background: To examine for a possible relationship between osteoarthritis and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis Methods: Published and unpublished literature from: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, OpenGrey and clinical trial registers. Search to 22nd November 2014. Cohort, case-control, randomised and non-randomised controlled trial papers reporting the prevalence of CVD in osteoarthritis were included. Results: Fifteen studies with 32,278,744 individuals were eligible. Pooled prevalence for overall CVD pathology in people with osteoarthritis was 38.4% (95% Confidence interval (CI): 37.2% to 39.6%). Individuals with osteoarthritis were almost three times as likely to have heart failure (Relative Risk (RR): 2.80; 95% CI: 2.25 to 3.49) or ischaemic heart disease (RR: 1.78; 95% CI: 1.18 to 2.69) compared to matched non-osteoarthritis cohorts. No significant difference was detected between the two groups for the risk of experiencing myocardial infarction or stroke. There was a three-fold decrease in the risk of experiencing a transient ischaemic attack in the osteoarthritis cohort compared to the non-osteoarthritis group. Conclusions: Prevalence of CVD in patients with OA is significant. There was an observed increased risk of incident heart failure and ischaemic heart disease in people with OA compared to matched controls. However the relationship between OA and CVD is not straight-forward and there is a need to better understand the potential common pathways linking pathophysiological mechanisms

The Talent Management of Indie Authorship: From American independent cinema and short ā€œfilmsā€ to pay-TV and streaming

    Get PDF
This book explores the roles that talent intermediaries, including talent agents, talent managers and producers, play in packaging, marketing and selling screen media products, services and brands by constructing and positioning their clients and collaborators as indie-auteurs. Exploring several case-studies across a range of screen media during an era of media convergence, including American indie cinema, high-end television, music video, advertising and branded content, the book explores the strategies that talent intermediaries adopt and the industrial, cultural, and social connotations and hierarchies that indie-auteurism as a promotional discourse and tool carries and reinforces. Taking a cultural production approach that involves analysing promotional, extratextual and critical discourse surrounding projects such as The Revenant, Judas and the Black Messiah, The O.A and Mr. Robot, the book links taste and professional legitimacy to race and gender inequalities as it scrutinises notions about the maverick White male auteur that have proliferated around contemporary indie productions. Providing new perspectives on the careers of indie-auteurs such as the Coen brothers, Steven Soderbergh, and Tyler Perry, and addressing the work of lesser studied figures such as Amy Seimetz, Dee Rees, and Shaka King, the book stakes out new ground that complicates popular ideas of indie-auteurs as highly autonomous and innovative filmmakers by exploring how this authorial discourse migrates between media and is constructed and reconfigured in relation to changing industrial and cultural contexts

Deep dielectric charging of regolith within the Moon\u27s permanently shadowed regions

Abstract Energetic charged particles, such as galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar energetic particles (SEPs), can penetrate deep within the lunar surface, resulting in deep dielectric charging. This charging process depends on the GCR and SEP currents, as well as on the regolith\u27s electrical conductivity and permittivity. In permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) near the lunar poles, the discharging timescales are on the order of a lunation (āˆ¼20 days). We present the first predictions for deep dielectric charging of lunar regolith. To estimate the resulting subsurface electric fields, we develop a data-driven, one-dimensional, time-dependent model. For model inputs, we use GCR data from the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation on board the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and SEP data from the Electron, Proton, and Alpha Monitor on the Advanced Composition Explorer. We find that during the recent solar minimum, GCRs create persistent electric fields up to āˆ¼700 V/m. We also find that large SEP events create transient but strong electric fields (ā‰„106 V/m) that may induce dielectric breakdown. Such breakdown would likely result in significant modifications to the physical and chemical properties of the lunar regolith within PSRs. Key Points Energetic charged particles deep dielectrically charge the lunar regolithWe model the resulting subsurface electric fieldsThe electric fields may be great enough to induce dielectric breakdown

Talent Representation and Diversity: Charles D. King, MACRO & M88

In media scholarship, the roles that talent intermediaries including talent agents and managers play in production has gone frequently overlooked (Lotz, 2014: 27-28; Roussel, 2017: 194-195). In 2018, however, UCLAā€™s annual Hollywood Diversity Report found that talent agencies and talent managers perform gatekeeping roles that contribute to the underrepresentation of women and people of colour in Hollywood film and television production (Hunt et al. 2018: 28-32). Since the publication of this report, a greater spotlight on diversity in Hollywood following especially the #MeToo, #OscarsSoWhite and #BlackLivesMatter movements have led to incremental gains being made for women and people of colour in screen production, especially in television (citation). In turn, some shifts have occurred in the talent representation business. One manifestation of these circumstances came in 2020 when Charles D. King, the first ever African American partner at WME and the founder of production firm MACRO, partnered with Phillip Sun, one of WMEā€™s first ever Asian American partners, to establish M88, a talent management firm focused on representing diverse voices (Tran, 2020). Recruiting marquee clients including Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan and Idris Elba and maintaining links with WME, M88 positioned itself as a potentially powerful new player in the Hollywood talent representation business. Thus, Sun stated, ā€˜Where M88 can be a leader in the industry is to shine the light that a successful representation firm can look like us ā€¦ How do we keep pushing the bar for the next generation?ā€™ (Lee, 2020). With all of this in mind, this paper takes M88 and its parent company MACRO as a case-study for shedding light on the role that talent agencies and management companies play in improving or restricting diversity in screen media production. In doing so, the paper explores to what extent real change is occurring and asks whether companies such as M88 can really help to bring about the change that is needed

Purpose: To review and synthesise the literature detailing the use of social support to facilitate physical activity participation in individuals with schizophrenia. Method: A systematic review of major electronic databases was conducted to identify literature regarding the use of social support to promote physical activity among people with schizophrenia. A narrative synthesis was undertaken in four stages, including development of a theory, developing a preliminary synthesis, exploring relationships and assessing the robustness of the synthesis. Results: From a total of 110 studies, 23 met the inclusion criteria including 883 individuals with schizophrenia. Informational support was the most documented form of social support, followed by emotional, esteem and tangible. Providers included research personnel, healthcare professionals, family members and peers. Details of the content of the different dimensions of functional support are given. Social support appears to have an important role to help individuals with schizophrenia initiate, comply and adhere with exercise interventions. Social support may have an indirect benefit on weight maintenance. However, due to the limitations of the selected literature, it was difficult ascertain what the (in)direct benefit of social support are on health outcomes. Conclusions: Social support appears to play a pivotal role in initiating physical activity as well as ensuring compliance and adherence to physical activity. Future research is required to investigate the optimal type and mode of delivery of social support on health outcomes.Implications for Rehabilitation

Limited evidence is available that considers the role, value and use of social support within physical activity interventions for individuals with schizophrenia.

Social support appears most likely to aid an individualā€™s initiation, adherence and compliance to physical activity interventions.

There may be an indirect benefit of social support on maintaining or enhancing health outcomes.

Limited evidence is available that considers the role, value and use of social support within physical activity interventions for individuals with schizophrenia.

Social support appears most likely to aid an individualā€™s initiation, adherence and compliance to physical activity interventions.

There may be an indirect benefit of social support on maintaining or enhancing health outcomes.</p

The ultimate goal of the CASPR team is to build a solar powered car to race in the solar car for the Solar Car Challenge Classic Division, and race in a cross-county race or at the famous Texas Motor Speedway. The car must have taillights, blinkers, headlights, and extra suspension. For the fall semester of 2021, we researched different parts and other solar cars to see what would be the best fit most beneficial. We were able to find all the parts needed for the construction of the car. The Solar Car Challenge website provides some resources to make finding parts easier. During the spring semester we have been focusing on building a frame with wheels so we can start to put the car together.https://scholarworks.moreheadstate.edu/celebration_posters_2022/1025/thumbnail.jp
