Statistical Approach to Raman Analysis of Graphene-Related Materials: Implications for Quality Control
A statistical method to determine the number of measurements required from nanomaterials to ensure reliable and robust analysis is described. Commercial products utilizing graphene are in their infancy and recent investigations of commercial graphene manufacture have attributed this to the lack of robust metrology and standards by which graphene and related carbon materials can be measured and compared. Raman spectroscopy is known to be a useful tool in carbon nanomaterial characterization, but to provide meaningful information, in particular for quality control or management, multiple spectra are needed. Herein we present a statistical method to quantify the number of different spectra or other microscale measurements that should be taken to reliably characterize a graphene material. We have recorded a large number of Raman measurements and studied the statistical convergence of these data sets. We use a graphical approach to monitor the change in summary statistics and a Monte Carlo based bootstrapping method of data analysis to computationally resample the data demonstrating the effects of underanalyzing a material; for example, graphene nanoplatelets may require over 500 spectra before information about the exfoliation efficiency, particle size, layer number, and chemical functionalization is accurately obtained
The racist bodily imaginary: the image of the body-in-pieces in (post)apartheid culture
This paper outlines a reoccurring motif within the racist imaginary of (post)apartheid culture: the black body-in-pieces. This disturbing visual idiom is approached from three conceptual perspectives. By linking ideas prevalent in Frantz Fanonâs description of colonial racism with psychoanalytic concepts such as Lacanâs notion of the corps morcelĂ©, the paper offers, firstly, an account of the black body-in-pieces as fantasmatic preoccupation of the (post)apartheid imaginary. The role of such images is approached, secondly, through the lens of affect theory which eschews a representational âreadingâ of such images in favour of attention to their asignifying intensities and the role they play in effectively constituting such bodies. Lastly, Judith Butlerâs discussion of war photography and the conditions of grievability introduces an ethical dimension to the discussion and helps draw attention to the unsavory relations of enjoyment occasioned by such images
Q-ball Dynamics
We investigate the dynamics of Q-balls in one, two and three space
dimensions, using numerical simulations of the full nonlinear equations of
motion. We find that the dynamics of Q-balls is extremely complex, involving
processes such as charge transfer and Q-ball fission. We present results of
simulations which illustrate the salient features of 2-Q-ball interactions and
give qualitative arguments to explain them in terms of the evolution of the

Histopathology, vitellogenin and chemical body burden in mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) sampled from six river sites receiving a gradient of stressors
There are over 40,000 chemical compounds registered for use in Australia, and only a handful are monitored in the aquatic receiving environments. Their effects on fish species in Australia are largely unknown. Mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) were sampled from six river sites in Southeast Queensland identified as at risk from a range of pollutants. The sites selected were downstream of a wastewater treatment plant discharge, a landfill, two agricultural areas, and two sites in undeveloped reaches within or downstream of protected lands (national parks). Vitellogenin analysis, histopathology of liver, kidney and gonads, morphology of the gonopodium, and chemical body burden were measured to characterize fish health. Concentrations of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in water were analyzed by in vitro bioassays and chemical analysis. Estrogenic, anti-estrogenic, anti-androgenic, progestagenic and anti-progestagenic activities and TrOCs were detected in multiple water samples. Several active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), industrial compounds, pesticides and other endocrine active compounds were detected in fish carcasses at all sites, ranging from < 4â4700 ng/g wet weight, including the two undeveloped sites. While vitellogenin protein was slightly increased in fish from two of the six sites, the presence of micropollutants did not cause overt sexual endocrine disruption in mosquitofish (i.e., no abnormal gonads or gonopodia). A correlation between lipid accumulation in the liver with total body burden warrants further investigation to determine if exposure to low concentrations of TrOCs can affect fish health and increase stress on organs such as the liver and kidneys via other mechanisms, including disruption of non-sexual endocrine axes involved in lipid regulation and metabolism
Vector meson dominance and the rho meson
We discuss the properties of vector mesons, in particular the rho^0, in the
context of the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model. This provides a unified
framework to study several aspects of the low energy QCD sector. Firstly, we
show that in the HLS model the physical photon is massless, without requiring
off field diagonalization. We then demonstrate the equivalence of HLS and the
two existing representations of vector meson dominance, VMD1 and VMD2, at both
tree level and one loop order. Finally the S matrix pole position is shown to
provide a model and process independent means of specifying the rho mass and
width, in contrast to the real axis prescription currently used in the Particle

Testing nonperturbative techniques in the scalar sector of the standard model
We discuss the current picture of the standard model's scalar sector at
strong coupling. We compare the pattern observed in the scalar sector in
perturbation theory up to two-loop with the nonperturbative solution obtained
by a next-to-leading order 1/N expansion. In particular, we analyze two
resonant Higgs scattering processes, ff -> H -> f'f' and ff -> H -> ZZ, WW. We
describe the ingredients of the nonperturbative calculation, such as the
tachyonic regularization, the higher order 1/N intermediate renormalization,
and the numerical methods for evaluating the graphs.
We discuss briefly the perspectives and usefulness of extending these
nonperturbative methods to other theories
Extracting Br(omega->pi^+ pi^-) from the Time-like Pion Form-factor
We extract the G-parity-violating branching ratio Br(omega->pi^+ pi^-) from
the effective rho-omega mixing matrix element Pi_{rho omega}(s), determined
from e^+e^- -> pi^+ pi^- data. The omega->pi^+ pi^- partial width can be
determined either from the time-like pion form factor or through the constraint
that the mixed physical propagator D_{rho omega}^{mu nu}(s) possesses no poles.
The two procedures are inequivalent in practice, and we show why the first is
preferred, to find finally Br(omega->pi^+ pi^-) = 1.9 +/- 0.3%.Comment: 12 pages (published version
Integral correlation measures for multiparticle physics
We report on a considerable improvement in the technique of measuring
multiparticle correlations via integrals over correlation functions. A
modification of measures used in the characterization of chaotic dynamical
sytems permits fast and flexible calculation of factorial moments and cumulants
as well as their differential versions. Higher order correlation integral
measurements even of large multiplicity events such as encountered in heavy ion
collisons are now feasible. The change from ``ordinary'' to ``factorial''
powers may have important consequences in other fields such as the study of
